4 out of 5 stars Stand by for action ...This is an emergency!.......2007-05-01

I was a child of the eighties, and Terrahawks was the only thing of telly that scared me.

Terrahawks was different to any Gerry Anderson puppet series that came before it. The puppets weren't supermarionettes - instead of strings controlled from above, they were hand puppets. They looked realistic and even had realistic skin. If you were to squint at the screen you'd thing they were real actors (albeit with somewhat disproportionately large heads!).

The premise is a good one - mankind has colonised Mars. The evil Zelda form the planet Guk has destroyed human settlements there and is now trying to take over the Earth. Only one group can stand a chance of stopping her - The Terrahawks!!!

I ordered this DVD for the nostalgic value, and it was great to watch this again. The theme tune made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end - the music to this series is great, synth electro-rock with a bit of choir thrown in for good measure, fabulous!

The thing that struck me was how this hasn't dated that badly. The visual effects are actually on a par, and often better than a lot of 80's sci-fi films. The picture quality isn't great, and you see some "squaring" where the compression struggles with the busyness of uncleaned video.

I expected this DVD to contain just the episodes, but there are some bonus features - which consist mainly of pictures of the original promotional material, and a brief biog of each main character.

After the theme tune and the scary Zelda, it was the Zeroids I remembered best of all, and I enjoyed watching them again.

This is actually pretty good Sci-Fi and it seems strong enough to be shown today on TV. It isn't just a kids TV programme, this is a family TV programme and it would be interesting to see a modern adaptation if the original never gets re-run on telly.

If you were a child of the '80s then I recommend you get a Danger Mouse DVD, and of course - this!

5 out of 5 stars Anderson still has it!.......2006-01-12

After Gerry Anderson's last puppet show (The Secret Service) everyones fave puppet meister took a long earned rest from puppets to do some live action work.

But then in 1983 he was back with the puppets to bring us an entirely new show that was light years ahead of it's time but still had all the necessary ingredients to make it a true Anderson original.

Terrahawks has every thing an Anderson phenomana should have from witty dialoge to the usual larger than life special effects.

Yep belive me when I say that this show is a real treat that people of all ages will LOVE!

5 out of 5 stars Terrahawks RULES BROTHER !.......2002-07-26

One of GA's lesser known puppet creations, but as a youngster I grew up with this, and Zelda scared me to death. This has a greater element of humour than Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet,etc.. with an edge of cheese. Superb stuff the only criticism would be the episodes are too short ! I really hope they release the 2nd Series on DVD also, as they seemed to ignore this on the old Channel 5 VHS releases in the late eighties. Get it people it rocks !

5 out of 5 stars "Flaming Thunderbolts!" Terrahawks returns at last!.......2002-07-25

The year is 2020. Zelda, Evil Android Queen of the planet Guk invades Mars and launches an attack on Earth. It is up to the elite Earth-defence force, Terrahawks, to save the day.

Terrahawks is simply the best Gerry Anderson series to date. The episodes are fast moving, the characters well developed and the scripts have a lightness of touch and humour that is often lacking in earlier Anderson shows. Zelda is the ultimate villainess who you love to hate and Dr. Ninestein the gorgeous, though occasionally growling hero (well, he is called Tiger!) The puppet faces are beautifully modelled and their movements lifelike.

The extra features on the DVD such as the scripts of the four episodes are very welcome. A particularly nice touch is the chapter selection screen which is in the style of the zeroid naughts and crosses board which ends each episode. A joy to watch again. All I can say is "Stroll on" Terrahawks Volume 2!

5 out of 5 stars About Time..........2002-07-20

This is a ten-fifty! People will remember this show when it first came out in the 80's. It was very popular at the time, and its re-release is well overdue.

This Video contains the first four episodes. The first two were piloted back in 1983. "Expect the Unexpected" part 1 tells the story of how the evil witch-android Zelda and her fleet invade Mars with a view to attacking earth.

Each episode on this tape has the fantastic theme tune composed by Richard Harvey, and a cubes versus zeroids noughts and crosses game to end the show.

True, the character names in this show may be somewhat laughable, such as "Cy-Star" being zelda's...er..sister, but it couldn't be any different.

Windsor Davies provides the military-like tones for Zero, a spherical robot who longs to be human, and is one of the many reasons this show really took off. Zero and Tiger Ninestein rarely get on, despite the fact zero often produces the heroics.

The puppet-detail by Gerry Anderson is brilliant. Believe me, Zelda will scare you! And you will never forget her cackle in a hurry.

Terrahawks, welcome back!
