Saving Private Ryan [1998]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Since its release in 1998, Steven Spielberg's D-Day drama Saving Private Ryan has become hugely influential: everything, from the opening sequence of Gladiator ("Saving Marcus Aurelius") to the marvellous 10-hour TV series Band of Brothers, has been made in its shadow. There have been many previous attempts to recreate the D-Day landings on screen (notably, the epic The Longest Day), but thanks to Spielberg's freewheeling hand-held camerawork, Ryan was the first time an audience really felt like they were there, storming up Omaha Beach in the face of withering enemy fire.

After the indelible opening sequence, however, the film is not without problems. The story, though based on an American Civil War incident, feels like it was concocted simply to fuel Spielberg's sentimental streak. In standard Hollywood fashion the Germans remain a faceless foe (with the exception of one charmless character who turns out to be both a coward and a turncoat); and the Tom Hanks-led platoon consists of far too many stereotypes: the doughty Sergeant; the thick-necked Private; the Southern man religious sniper; the cowardly Corporal. Matt Damon seems improbably clean-cut as the titular Private in need of rescue (though that may well be the point); and why do they all run straight up that hill towards an enemy machine gun post anyway? Some non-US critics have complained that Ryan portrays only the American D-Day experience, but it is an American film made and financed by Americans after all. Accepting both its relatively narrow remit and its lachrymose inclinations, Saving Private Ryan deserves its place in the pantheon of great war pictures.

On the DVD: Saving Private Ryan on disc comes in a good-quality anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer with a suitably dynamic Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix in which bullets fly all around your living room. Extra features are pretty minimal, with a standard 30-minute "making of" piece called "Into the Breach" and two trailers. There are text notes on the cast and crew as well as the production, and a brief message from Mr Spielberg himself about why he decided to make the movie. --Mark Walker

2 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about this film, but generally, considering the director and the budget, dissatisfied.......2008-02-20

Hmmm, good bits and bad bits leave me not knowing what to think of this movie, other than I doubt that I've seen better battle scene effects, or a more unrealistic story line. It just didn't seem possible that even the Americans would be so sentimental to go looking for a single soldier to bring back home to his family, having to search the bloody battlefields of France during the most decisive and important stage of World War 2! There's no way such an order would have been given permission, and I'm afraid it's the little details like this that have continually let Spielberg down over the years. He does the big stuff better than anyone I think, great action, superbly inventive scenes, has a brilliant visual sense, and is always entertaining, but he is so often over the top with his content, as it's either too sentimental, too personal, or just too boy's own.

Another of his faults on show here is that he seems to think America won the war on its own, which is utter garbage. There is not a British soldier in view, in the whole of this movie, and yet the British troops were the real navigators of the front line incursions into Normandy and beyond. He underplays the free French role as well, and I just don't think he captures the essence of liberation anything like the way it was, as he should have. It seemed like his whole batallion was existing inside its own little bubble, just as the director appeared to be himself, in this rather insular, not quite authentic looking war film.

2 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2008-02-11

This lengthy film is one of the most boring I've ever seen. I really can't understand why so many people love it. It's not enough for a film to have realistic scenes such as the all too many and way too long battle sequences in "Saving Private Ryan" Speiberg certainly failed to entertain me, though I'm sure he entertained himself, which should not be the object of the excercise.

5 out of 5 stars Saving the war genre.......2008-02-04

Saving Private Ryan. It's not as simple as it sounds. A squad is assigned to locate a soldier and bring him back alive so that he can be sent home because three of his brothers have died in the war. The order comes from the Chief of Staff. And right there and then you understand how this movie is going to develop. And you either think `oh yes,' or `oh no,' or `ok, this might be interesting.' And quite frankly, it is. It's very interesting. For there is more than one way to look at it, and that is always good news, especially with war movies.

The movie steers clear of mushy sentimentalisms and instead chooses to explore and develop the characters involved, their interactions as a group, the nature of their mission within the greater dynamic of the war, and the trials and tribulations they face in order to uphold a simple and noble principle: to protect the last surviving son in a family of four brothers. Like it or not, agree or disagree, the orders are set and the mission must be accomplished. And that is what gives this movie a backbone and bedrock. Its premise is solid, supporting with ease the great storyline, as well as the numerous perspectives that it may induce, and it delivers a fine and unnerving account of a diverse squad of American characters being immersed in the heat of battle. Tom Hanks steals the show as a troubled captain and much transformed ex-***, and Tom Sizemore delivers a fine performance as his right-hand man. Memorable and enjoyable performances are given all around by a very colourful cast, and the result is brilliant. Don't miss it. It's perhaps one of the great war-movies in modern filmmaking.

1 out of 5 stars Saving private ryan.......2008-01-20

the first 30 mins is very good cinema giving a realistic depiction of events on D-Day. After that the story takes a hugh dive, very boring i found myself falling asleep after the first hour. also who did they consult on tactics because i'm quite sure you dont have a conversation whilst on patrol in enemy territory unless you have a suicide wish. why was this film such a let down compared to band of brothers.

5 out of 5 stars super movie.......2008-01-01

its an awsome world war 2 movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat right until the end !

5 out of 5 stars I've Had The Time of My Life.......2008-01-05

This is amazing. I have loved this film for long as I can remember and can barely believe that it is 20 years old!! It is still as fresh as it was when it came out 20 years ago and it's one of those films that you can watch time and time again without getting bored with it.
Great storyline, great characters, great actors and great music make this film one of the best films from the last 20 years.
The 20th Anniversary Edition is good. It has bonus features that you won't get anywhere else with interviews from the two main characters/actors as well as original auditions and lots more. Worth buying even if you own the original version before for the extra alone it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2007-11-18

This is a brilliant film i must have seen it multiple times. patrick swayze is gorgeous as johnny castle and jennifer Grey is just perfect as Baby. The dancing is brilliant and i always get hairs on the back of my neck in the final dance scene. There are lots of extras on this dvd including interviews, deleted scenes, etc. Just wonderful !

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate chick flick.......2007-11-04

This really is the ultimate chick flick.
Men this is not really recommended for you..
Its about "Baby", a girl coming of age whilst coming up against very foreign problems to her: Abortion, love, sex, dancing, theft, and no longer being a daddys girl.
This is a great love story mixed in with a realisation about the nitty gritties of life.
This is a classic no matter how many years go by.

5 out of 5 stars One for the ladies.......2007-10-27

It's not my favourite film but nearly ever female in my family has fallen in love with this film over time.

Yes as the one reviewer said its not for him , but i don't know a film that appeals to everyone.

So take this as you find it , a sweet story of love & human emotion.. watch and enjoy
( fella's get this for the special one in your life... thank me later ;) )

Dirty Dancing [1987]

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's inspired a hit musical. The soundtrack has sold in its millions. And it's still, arguably, the most popular film on Patrick Swayze's curriculum vitae. Most worrying of all, perhaps, is that Dirty Dancing is now more than twenty years old. Now that's scary.

Still, it does offer the excuse for a special anniversary release, and that's exactly what we have here. And, to be fair, the film has never looked better. The story is still as straightforward and simple as it always was, baked just to the point where it can support the aforementioned Swayze and Jennifer Grey strutting their stuff. But Dirty Dancing nonetheless continues to work well to this day, with its rarely-rivalled, sizzling mix of romance, energy and music.

Of course, it's an easy film to pick holes in, should you be inclined to do so. After all, at heart it's a well packaged piece of hokum, that's never likely to contend in a Top 100 movies poll. But to pick holes would be churlish, and perhaps to miss the point. Because Dirty Dancing's mantra is to entertain, and it delivers on that promise with some conviction. The late Emile Ardolino wisely keeps his direction zippy, and the two leads really do look like they're having the time of their life.

Granted, this latest re-release isn't going to convert sceptics to the ways of Dirty Dancing, and the unfortunate, unwelcome sequel will remain a blot on its copybook. But this original is hard to beat, and it's still a hard dish to resist. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2008-03-03

Dirty Dancing is a timeless gem. Every woman should see this film at least once in their live.
Johnny and Baby make the perfect couple who find love unexpectantly and the story follows their struggle to be together.
You'll watch it over and over and never lose any of the romance.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite movie.......2008-02-21

There is just something about this film that totally hooked me. The first time I watched it, I just didnt want it to finish, infact I watched the very next day (I just couldn't wait any longer!) and I still feel the same passion everytime I watch it. This is one film that I will watch over and over again.

The chemistry between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey is amazing and the dancing is phenomenal. It just makes me want to dance. The beauty of the scenes just took me away.

I will watch this film again and again and again and never tire of it.
There is so much that I could say, sing its praises in so many ways, not because of the script or anything specific like that, but because of the feeling it gives you. Watch it and see for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars why wait?!.......2007-11-23

OMG <3 Why did i wait so long to see this film? it makes me cry! so sweet =] xx

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-30

I first watched this film, oddly enough, when I was in hospital and aged about seven ot eight. They had it in the video collection in the T.V. room. I watched it with another girl who had already seen it, and once the movie ended, I had fallen in love. (Depsite my age).
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is fantastic. It has lasted so long because it taps into what most girls secretly want and desire. A good old fashioned romance. How many girls would love to go on holiday and fall in love? Especially if the object of our affections was Patrick Swayze.
I have spoken to men who have seen this movie and didn't like it and the main objection seems to be Patrick Swayze. Jealous anyone?
Men, for the most part, are not going to like this movie because the hero (Swayze) puts them to shame. Don't get me wrong, there are some men who know how to appreciate a good film and don't pan it because it makes them feel/look inadequate. Those men know how to romance their girl and are no doubt duely rewarded!
The film has fantastic acting, dancing and follows a realistic story.
I did always get the sense that it was more eighties than sixties, but that never bothered me.
The soundtrack is brilliant and the love story heart warming. I always get a sense of longevity where Baby and Johnny are concerned once the movie ends. I am grateful that the sequel, which was equally as good but for different reasons, did not interfere with this movies ending.
Well worth five stars and more.
A classic that will survive another 20 years I have no doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-09-20

What's not to love about this film? Good plot, good actors, good music! The story isn't overly complicated and whilst yes it does look a little dated if you can look past that it is a really good film. And this from someone who was born the same year as this film was released.
Buy it! That's all I'm going to say.

Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker head for the City of Lights in the somewhat threadbare but sporadically exciting Rush Hour 3, the second sequel to director Brett Ratner's 1998 cop-buddy hit. Chan's Inspector Lee and Tucker's Detective Carter hop from Los Angeles to Paris in pursuit of a Chinese triad only to find a mixed reception, including a brutal warning from a French cop (Roman Polanski) and anti-American sentiments from a cab driver (Yvan Attal) who eventually becomes an important and funny ally. Lee and Carter, when not fighting their way out of rooms full of martial arts gangsters and crazed assassins (Sun Ming Ming), follow a trail to a beautiful woman (Noemie Lenoird) who literally carries a vital clue on her person. Lee also holds secret meetings with a United Nations authority (Max Von Sydow), but his personal struggles with a criminal mastermind (Hiroyuki Sanada)--who happens to be an important figure in his life-- are at the heart of this movie.

The aging Chan still seems to defy the laws of physics with some of his more spectacular stunts. But it's true those stunts take a little more time than they used to, and judicious editing makes Chan look spry as ever. He frets charmingly in Rush Hour 3, while Tucker revives his brash character's motormouth guile and whiny womanizing. There isn't a lot left to be discovered about Lee and Carter's compatibility, and even with a minor crisis over their loyalty to one another in Rush Hour 3, their all-important relationship is almost too easy to take for granted now. Fortunately, the film's biggest thrills come from several wild fight scenes, especially a climactic battle on the Eiffel Tower that is rich in imagination. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment.......2008-02-10

What can I say, this is one of the worst movies that I have ever seen, and I'm a big fan of Jackie Chan and the previous two movies in the franchise. Tucker looks fat and bloated and Chan looks old and slow. The plot is paper thin and even the so called twist is not only transparent but lifted straight from the first movie. The jokes are rehashed and even the action sequences are disappointing with Chan resorting to wire work and CGI (check out the parachute jump from the Eiffel Tower!). I don't know why, but second sequels always seem to fall a bit flat - lets hope they don't make a fourth instalment!

4 out of 5 stars What an absolute tucker of a movie...........2008-01-25

It's funny how a trilogy can change your mind about things. Lets get a few things straight right off the bat, I've been loving Jackie Chan movies for a long time, I love the subtitled Project A's to the badly dubbed Drunken Masters from way back when.
I loved the fact that if you want a story to enjoy, read a book, or watch a Van Damme movie (Joke) but if you wanted the best, undiluted action movie with no cheating special fx then go watch a movie with Chan flying about the top of a building somewhere or axe-kicking his way through to a mob boss in the middle of Timbuktu with no apparent reason or rhyme.

He'd been doing these flicks for the best part of three decades, from writing, acting, directing, stunting and even singing the soundtrack to some of his films (Seriously) they were great, ticked the boxes that the people who watched them wanted and that was that....Then all of a sudden Chan did what I like to call 'sold out' to the Americans. Now don't get me wrong, I don't blame him for it, I'm sure it paid well, blah blah but it resulted in churning out some really watered down movies, Hollywood movies where they try to accomplish too much from an action flick, a story, a thriller, some romance, when all we want is a can of whoop-ass to be opened-and every five or so minutes. Super slow mo scenes were added and stunt men stood in were Jackie would usually have been thrown from cars or choppers, the sort of films that your Van Damme's were making came out.

Now a few were pants, Rumble in the Bronx, Mr Nice guy etc but then came along Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon (Which is awesome - re other review due soon) and I would say JC officially landed in the US.

Now this is where my gripe starts. The first Rush Hour was a Jackie Chan movie with Chris Tucker supporting, it was, make no mistake, even though it was watered down action somewhat. The movie catered for JC fans with its action and Jackie stunts (Granted some were stuntmen) and apart from that, the only downfall into his US entrée was Chris Tucker who previously had been ruining films like The Fifth Element with his motor mouth.
It was OK though, if you could get past him, the film was an hour and a half laugh for most.
Then came Rush 2, which was much of the same fare, JC had churned out probably 3-4 films in-between whilst Chris Tucker had done nothing, it had a little more of Tuckers mouth, and a little less of Chan's feet, was funnier to the ears than the eyes if you get what I mean by what the focus was on. Then came this one.

The way this was advertised distressed me, since part 2, again Mr Chan had done 3-4 flicks, one of which Shanghai Knights (Also awesome - review pending) and Tucker ZERO, seriously, look it up, he made no movies in this space, and this movie was billed as Rush Hour 3, starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan! Chan had been bumped to supporting role! Unbelievable!
Yes this is a Chris Tucker movie, make no mistake, Jackie plays his sidekick, a foolish one at that, and it repulsed me...at first...until I sat through half an hour or so and the flip-flop came. I un-folded my arms, and allowed myself to laugh at this hilarious Tucker of a vehicle!

Really, it is funny as hell, I've finished ranting now because I am over it, I didn't think Tucker deserved to share the screen with such a legend as Chan, especially considering it is Chan who has kept his career alive, but on review, it was the best way to go with this trilogy because Jackie's stunts were getting old, whereas Tucker has so many comic scenes its ace...the one where he's arguing with Mr Me and Mr You made me wet my pants!
It's the sort of film that you can crack on at the end of most nights and just catch the odd fight scene, or the odd joke and enjoy without having to pay too much attention to.
I would recommend getting this if you are a hardened fan of Kung Fu, or not, even better would be the trilogy boxset which I think is going for less than a score, its worth it to see the transition in lead roles alone - plus all the outtakes of Tucker messing up the fights to Jackie messing up English is enough for an episode and a half of `It'll be Alright on the Night'
...One thing that still bothers me though is that despite Jackie keeping Tuckers career alive with this franchise, Chris still managed to negotiate a pay check double the size of the Drunken Masters....maybe all those bumps to Jackie's head has taken its toll.

3 out of 5 stars As good as 1 &2...hmmmm.......2008-01-14

Now, straight off the bat, Is this as good as 1 & 2? err...probably not. Is this still a good movie?, yeh. Though i think rush hour 1 and 2 were better I would still recommend watching rush hour 3 even if its just to complete watching the trilogy, not to say thats the only reason to watch this. I myself wasn't quite expecting a laugh fest from this movie like i got from the previous ones, and did find myself letting out a little heh at some scenes but like i said i was expecting that. But even with that said, there are funny scenes in the film, its usually chris tuckers one liners that does it for me,and lots of action, and yeh, even though chris tucker has gotten kinda bigger and jackie chan has gotten kinda old the action scenes are still well done and really exciting. Overall its a good watch if you want action & comedy or to just pass the time. Also i hear talk that there COULD be a rush hour 4 in the works, if it turns out to be true hopefully it'll be better......hopefully.

5 out of 5 stars 87 MINUTES OF COMEDY!!!!!!.......2008-01-11

Carter and Lee are back in there third film from the Rush Hour series and it was brillant even know it was in Paris. You know what you are getting with this film 87 minutes of fight scenes, one liners, plenty of laughs and not forgetting the ladies. We have seen it all before in the first two films but I think it's gets better Tucker is a very funny bloke as for Chan you have to give this man a bit of credit where it is due he is 50 or so years of age. The 2 disc edition comes with all the extra bit and pieces which are well worth watching especially the blopper reel / outtakes. If you haven't seen any of these films go a buy them you will not be diappointed it's good clean fun which the whole family can enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars The Funniest yet - still average though.......2008-01-07

2007 has been the year of the threquel, and at long last--after the ambitious excess of Spiderman 3, the lackluster of Shrek the Third, the love-it-or-hate-it logic to the Pirates finale, the return to glossy form of Ocean's 13, and the tense, engaging Bourne Ultimatum (which gave a great ultimatum to its own franchise)--we come to its end with the fun, campy adrenaline-rush (what a pun!) of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker re-teaming for "Rush Hour 3". But I guess if you want to get specific a third resident evil is on the way (ah!).

Part of the fun of the third "Rush Hour" film (and maybe what holds it back a little, but this isn't a big deal) is that it doesn't try and grow out of its comfortable niche; it sticks to what it knows we enjoy, and delivers. Chris Tucker is still an undiminished comedian of zany, unstoppable vocal fervor; as much as Jackie Chan is still a stoic engine of physical fury and the dead-pan humor to Tucker's rapid-fire, witty remarks. And as tried and dead as the buddy cop genre is, these two actors play off each other so well, with such great chemistry, that cliché seems alive and kicking.

All the other staples we want are present: great comedy routines (the "whose on first"-esquire bickering in the karate school is side-splitting), plenty of bickering between the main players Lee and Carter, and over-the-top action (really this is where the third installment flat-out destroys the first two; the final crescendo of martial arts, sword-play and shootouts atop the EiFel Tower is a masterfully choreographed and executed sequence). Brett Ratner may be a hack of a filmmaker (I will never forgive him for the third X-Men), but he knows how to have a good, relaxing and enjoyable time at the cinema when it comes to this: cornball fun mixing up belly laughs, cliché action elements, superbly staged chases and fights, and even tossing in a cameo from Roman Polanski.

I can't say there's much wrong with "Rush Hour 3"; I would be a liar to say I didn't get what I expected and enjoyed it. Sure, there's nothing very new here, but I don't want my clincher to the big summer blockbuster lineup to be any other way. Just casual, forget your hard day entertainment. 7/10

Holes [2003]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Holes is a scrupulously faithful adaptation of Louis Sachar's book Holes and should delight the book's fans. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2008-02-29

Didn't know what to expect which was probably a blessing as on paper I wouldn't have chosen it. Watched it with my 7 year old and was surprised that he followed the story as I thought it was quite complicated for someone of that age. Just goes to show what I know and that children are capable of more than we adults give them credit for! He enjoyed it so much that he watched it again the following day and the day after that! It came out of it's case again at Christmas for a group of boys and everyone of them loved it. From an adult perspective I thought it was great, not your predictable children's fodder that you can have a nap half way through and not miss anything. This is a clever, well acted film particularly for boys.

3 out of 5 stars Good but no cigar.......2007-07-23

I liked the film on it`s own, as it is quite well made except for some of the crew appesring in some shots, and reverse sceens. It`s good on it`s own, but after reading holes I had mixed feelings. Indeed it is very very similar in storyline, which is one of the things I gnjoyed most about it, But the charecters contrast like black and white: In the book, for example, the main charectar [Stanley] is said to be fat. In the movie he is lanky, and so on! Still, a very enjoyable one for the kiddies!

5 out of 5 stars A Brill Movie.......2007-05-12

I read the book of Hole's at school and my teacher said if you got the movie you would understand every thing more. I got the Movie and put it on and soon all my family came in! They loved it, it's a great family film and I would tell you to buy it and see what you think.

When the totalitarian planet of Mongo decides on a whim to obliterate Earth, it's up to the quarterback Flash Gordon and his oddball companions to make the universe safe for democracy. Based on the classic (and infinitely more reputable) comic strip and its 1930s screen serialisation, this candy-coloured trash classic deserves immortality for Queen's unforgettably pulsating soundtrack alone. The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright

    William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream [1999]

    Amazon.co.uk Review

By far the best thing about director Michael Hoffman's A Midsummer Night's Dream is the extraordinary all-star cast, which follows the precedent created by Kenneth Branagh's Italian-set romantic Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing (1993), of mixing major Hollywood stars--here Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer--with top British talent, in this instance Christian Bale, Rupert Everett, Roger Rees, David Strathairn and Dominic West. Kline makes a fine Nick Bottom, with Pfeiffer equally good as the fairy queen Titania and Everett brooding effectively as Oberon. Unfortunately, while both look ravishing, it is hard to tell which actress between Anna Friel (Brookside) and Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) gives the most wretched performance. Both are completely out of their depth the moment they begin to speak, and utterly outclassed by the excellent Sophie Marceau.

Shot in Tuscany and set in the 19th century, parts of the film are extraordinarily beautiful, while other sections could have benefited from some judicious special effects magic. This is not a bad movie, but it is rather uninspired, lacking any real imaginative grasp of the play. In contrast, the much less well known and lower budget Royal Shakespeare Company version of 1996 positively revels in the fantastically surreal possibilities this timeless text. --Gary S Dalkin

1 out of 5 stars Oh Dear Lord, Make It STOP!.......2007-11-22

How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, and Kevin Kline's gurning Bottom made me feel like setting fire to something.
Despite having a bunch of very pretty people (and, in Michelle Pfeiffer's Titania, a certified, Grade A beauty), this is a version of Shakespeare's comic masterpiece without a single ounce of sex in it. It would have been infinitely better as a Vogue fashion spread and accompanying touring exhibition.
    Heinously awful.

2 out of 5 stars An inadequate version.......2007-09-10

Although visually attractive, there is little to praise in this version.
The text is so full of delights that it musty have taken real effort to come up with such a tedious version. The comic elements were especially lack lustre. Nothing would induce me to sit through it again.

4 out of 5 stars Best version I've seen so far of this entertaining play.......2007-09-04

I've only one minus really on this production, that this Oberon isn't quite as good as the Oberon in the Beeb's Shakespeare Retold set - that Oberon was quite wonderful although the production generally was mediocre. However, this Oberon is perfectly good in what's such a delightful version of the play. I enjoyed the setting and the bicycles and yet maintaining the Shakespearean ethos throughout.

Particular accolades to Kevin Kline. Brilliant performance. Worth having really just for him!

5 out of 5 stars Best version I've seen yet of this great Shakespeare play.......2007-08-22

Splendid acting, splendid scenery, splendid conception altogether and especially from Kevin Kline who avoids making Bottom a bit of a twerp but instead presents him as a man with intelligence. My favourite part of Midsummer Night's Dream has always been the play within a play about Pyramus and Thisbe, and as always had me convulsed (ie with laughter).

I saw the BBC "Shakespeare retold" version awhile back and that wasn't nearly as good - indeed was sometimes quite boring and the play within a play was turned into two or three very poor modern-style variety acts. So I think it proves this isn't the easiest play to update to the present, although the Beeb's version did have the edge with Titania and Oberon who I think were even better conceived than in this version, but that doesn't detract from this Titania and Oberon as they are excellent. This version highly recommended and very more-ish.

5 out of 5 stars Very good acting with ironically fine sense of period.......2007-06-05

Strangely enough for a play written in the Tudor era and possibly set in Ancient Greece, this presents a very rich Victorian England to us. It's all there- the costumes, the bicycles, the grand English accents, the Duke's beautiful palace. It could have been slightly better if set in England as there are no Italian accents.
If you are reading the play, as has every schoolchild down the ages, then you just do not comprehend what is happening as well as you do here. I think that this is a superlative film and would definitely recommend it.

Peter Kay - Stand Up UKay [2007]

    Amazon.co.uk Review

It's hard to remember a comedian that's enjoyed anything like the far-reaching success of Peter Kay in recent years. A best-selling autobiography, writing and directing hit television shows, and a comedy tour that broke records are just some of his achievements, and there's a strong flavour of what makes him so popular on this Stand Up Ukay DVD.

The disc is effectively a greatest hits collection of his stand-up comedy routines, apparently chosen by the British public. So therefore Stand Up Ukay brings together some hilarious work: Hob Nobs in the your tea, how people dance at weddings and the infamous garlic bread are examples of some of the material here. The disc is then rounded out with the music video to "I'm Gonna Be" (500 Miles).

Without doubt, Stand Up Ukay is a DVD packed with laughs, but conversely, there's little getting away from the fact that it's full of material that the majority will have seen and enjoyed before. That some of it is making its third appearance on a DVD release does sour the taste a little, too.

Still, if you've missed out what all the fuss about, then Stand Up Ukay is an excellent starting point. Everyone else is best being a little more cautious. --Simon Brew

1 out of 5 stars Bigger rip off than "Live At Manchester Arena".......2008-02-07

Well "Live At Manchester Arena" had very little new material and this has none. The DVD comprises of sections from the previous 3 DVDs interspersed with pointless interviews with members of the public (from Bolton i presume?) about why Peter Kay is funny to them - as if I need to be told??!? Totally pointless and a massive rip off. "Stand Up Kay" is just further proof that Peter Kay has produced no new standup material for over 4 years.

I've just swapped my copy of this dvd that i got for christmas on swap cycle for a Parker Pen, being a big fan of Peter Kay i have all his other dvds so have seen everything that's on this recent one, a pen always comes in handy ;-)

    1 out of 5 stars Marketing Victim.......2008-01-23

Well I should have read the reviews. Peter Kay has me in hysterics, however it's the marketing execs who are laughing most now. This is an appalling con. Old material, still funny but not new, slotted between loads of people who's opinion is worthless. This is the worst kind of exploitation of fans. There is no redeeming features to this DVD. Avoid

1 out of 5 stars No New Material.......2008-01-12

This was a complete waste of time and money. The DVD contains rehashed material, out of sequence in clip form and commentary on this from Peter's many fans. His fanbase however, will be fast diminishing if most of them buy this!

1 out of 5 stars They saw us coming..........2008-01-09

Yes, Peter Kay is one of the best comedians to ever come out of the UK, but this "best of" DVD is just a rip-off. Many of his fans (like myself) have bought this or had this brought for them thinking it will be new material (from a top secret gig maybe?) and have just been slapped in the face with interrupted clips from his amazing Bolton Albert Halls and Blackpool Tower shows, but now with irritating fans being interviewed and giving away the gags before Kay's clips even comes onto the screen! There is literally nothing new from Kay on this DVD at all - no intro from Kay, no unseen footage and no backstage footage. The only thing slightly worth getting this DVD for is the I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) music video in the special features, which still isn't worth the value of the DVD alone.

If this is you're first time watching a live Kay stand up you will find his stuff very funny indeed (although, like I said - the gags are given away beforehand) but the people who will really be laughing are the distributors of this DVD who are basically flogging a dead horse. If you're considering buying this, answer me this first - would you go out today and buy yesterday's paper that's already sitting on your kitchen table, with someone telling you the stories before you've read them? If the answer is yes, this DVD is for you. But you would be a fool...

Save your money and buy the Peter Kay Live Collection, Phoenix Nights or Max & Paddy's Road to Nowhere instead, all of which you can get pretty cheap these days on t'internet.

      Nancy Drew [2007]

      Amazon.co.uk

Nancy Drew is an iconic girl detective created by Carolyn Keene with a passion for mystery and all things old. The small-town Nancy Drew (played by Julia Roberts' niece Emma Roberts) is about to experience a serious case of culture shock as she heads to Hollywood on an extended business trip with her father Carson Drew (Tate Donovan, The OC) and prepares to join the 21st century (well, sort of) at Hollywood High. Having promised her father that she'll give up sleuthing in favour of becoming a "normal" teenager, Nancy tries her best to resist the lure of the age-old mystery of famous actress Dehlia Draycott's (Laura Harring, Mulholland Drive) death, but living in Dehlia's old booby-trapped mansion full of clues proves too powerful a force for Nancy to resist. Feeling completely out of place with high school peers who prove self-absorbed and obsessed with fashion, Nancy makes an unlikely friend in 12-year-old Corky (Josh Flitter), the brother of one of the meanest girls at school. Hormones and hero worship land Corky right in the middle of Nancy's dangerous detective work and inspire some good old-fashioned jealousy when Nancy's close friend Ned (Max Thieriot) visits from River Heights. Nancy's deductive skills are as sharp as ever, and her inspired detective work will profoundly impact the lives of complete stranger Jane Brighton (Rachael Leigh Cook, She's The One), her own father, and a host of others. Offering a faster pace for modern audiences than the classic Nancy Drew films, this 2007 movie is sure to enthrall a whole new generation of tweens and teens while simultaneously living up to their parents', or older siblings' expectations. --Tami Horiuchi

      The Unit - Series 1 - Complete [2006]

      Amazon.co.uk Review

Full of action, intrigue, and espionage, The Unit offers a dramatic, fictionalised look inside the military while also giving viewers a peek inside the private lives of the elite squad. Conceived by the critically acclaimed David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, House of Games), The Unit is an elite, covert Special Forces team that operates outside the military chain of command. The first season's 13 episodes offer insight into the characters without revealing too much about the men who make up the operation. Are they extremely patriotic, or are they adrenalin junkies who have to be in danger to feel validated? The answer probably falls somewhere in between, and the viewer gets the feeling that as much as the men love their wives and children, it's their jobs that give them their true reason for living. Led by veteran Jonas Blane (Dennis Haysbert, 24), the Unit deals with terrorism, rescue missions, and assassinations quickly, discreetly, and efficiently. If all goes well, someone else gets the credit. If things go awry, it's their necks on the line. In the first season of The Unit, the action is fast, the plot is succinct, and the acting is well done (when dealing with the deadly missions). It's the secondary storyline involving the wives that's less successful. The newest member of the Unit, Bob Brown (Scott Foley, Felicity), apparently didn't fill his wife Kim (Audrey Marie Anderson) in on what their new life would be like. From the beginning, she resists the hoo rah attitude that the other wives exhibit. But rather than coming across as an independent free thinker, she is presented as a whining drip of a woman who has no clue about the definition of a secret. Of course, when faced with the military's version of The Stepford Wives, who could blame her? As Jonas' supportive wife Molly, Regina Taylor (I'll Fly Away, Courage Under Fire) is less sympathetic than usual. In the early episodes, she comes across as an almost stalkerish busybody who is always there when Kim is trying to cope with a life she never wanted. Throw in an affair between commanding officer Colonel Tom Ryan (Robert Patrick, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and one of the wives and you've got the makings of a military soap opera. The show is at its best when it concentrates on the men and their missions. We may not understand why they do what they do, but we're grateful that someone is doing the dangerous job for us. --Jae-Ha Kim

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to seeing the 2nd series.......2008-02-13

I honestly wasn't expecting anything particularly great from this series, but having an interest in the Special Forces I was obviously quite curious to see what it was like. And when I knew that an advisor (Eric Haney) to the series was an actual member and founder of the real life force that The Unit focuses upon, I was even more curious and hoped for added realism to be present in the show.

However, after seeing the events of the first episode, and the manner in which the principal operator stormed a hijacked plane (literally all by himself and without any body armour whatsoever), I began to wonder how much input Eric Haney actually had, and whether or not a fairly real portrayal of events, tactics and gear would feature in the show.

As I watched more and more episodes I began to question less and less and I didn't see anything that made me wonder as much as I did during the initial episode. And after watching the Delta Force special feature on the last disc at the end of the series, I was pleased to know that Eric Haney obviously did have a substantial amount of input into the series, and even the events of the first episode were explained, and that the actions and attire of the principal operator were deliberately portrayed that way (storming the plane solo because really there was only room for one man to do so in that fashion; and without body armour in case it snagged on anything along the aisle during the assault, where freedom and speed of movement would be critical, and that the point was obviously not to get shot in the first place anyway). So, to know that realism was being given a fair amount of consideration lay my doubts to rest, but by the end of the series I was already accepting of and pleased by the portrayal of most things anyway.

The series did take time to grow on me, but I liked it more as time went on, and I'm looking forward to seeing the next series, which is obviously much bigger and has considerably more episodes than the first series, which only has 13 and could be considered a little short.

Even though I was more interested in the operational side of things, the wives and families aspect didn't ever become too much or too irritating, and actually provided a more complete and realistic picture of the life of a Special Forces soldier, which obviously isn't constant action and only love of the job, but also about what they come home to and their love toward their families and fellows. There's always at least an adequate amount of focus upon unit operations though, so things never get too slow.

Some episodes are better than others, and I would mention episode 7 (Dedication) as being my favourite of the series --- I thought that was a truly superb and fitting espiode; one worthy of the heroes (both Special Forces and all military personnel) that are out in the world fighting and dying for their countries and for the security and freedom of the common people.

5 out of 5 stars The Unit stands out from the crowd........2007-10-22

The Unit has not received the critical acclaim that it undoubtedly deserves. It is as tense as `24', as tough as `The Shield' and as exciting as any other T.V. drama to date. Dennis Haysbert is excellent in lead role and is never let down by his supporting actors. Creator Shawn Ryan ensures that his characters are three-dimensional and avoid the falling foul of traditional military stereotypes. The unit is great popcorn entertainment with action and shocks throughout but is also intelligent enough to stand out from the crowd. Watch and enjoy!

      3 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointing.......2007-10-05

I bought this purely on the strength of Dennis Haysbert being in it after admiring his work as President Palmer in 24, but after watching this it is a reminder that it takes more than just a great actor(s) to make a great show.

The writers of The Unit have tried to make each episode individual with regard to the stories but this has the unfortunate consequence of making it feel rushed as writers are fighting against the time restrictions of an episode whilst characters get weighed down with dialog because of the need to explain a whole new scenario.
Couple that with the unnecessary viewpoint of the army wives's perspective alongside the main story and it feels like the opportunity to show the men in full on action has been, sadly missed.

This is a shame because you want to like these men, and you want to see what these highly trained special forces can really do, but they never really face a challenging enough adversary to impress the viewer, and they always get it right and go home to their wives at the end of the day.

On the subject of the wives, it seems like they were thrown into the mix as an afterthought to maybe draw in some female viewers, but in the process, not really adding anything to the story or the enjoyment but holding it back in most cases.

It's unclear to me exactly who this show is aimed at as there doesn't seem enough involvement in either the wives or The Unit's character development to feel any empathy or respect for them. Your not really given any time to get to know anyone or care what happens to them as it makes you feel like you are an observer skimming over the surface of their day to day lives rather than being privy to, and involved in a great story.

3 out of 5 stars Not so sure.......2007-09-09

I had never seen The Unit before buying it on a whim. I got it on the strength of the packaging and thought I would give it a go. It also has Shawn Ryan as a Producer and as I love The Shield it seemed like a fair bet.
Like the previous reviewer I am a fan of Ultimate Force. That programme was a good advert for the SAS .
I feel The Unit might do Delta Force a disjustice (even more so than Chuck Norris!)

When I watched The Unit I watched all the episodes back to back in one go as I was laid up with the flu. This isn't too hard though as there are only 13 in the first season which makes you kind of think you're not getting your moneys worth.
I thought right from the beginning that it seemed like a US version of Ultimate Force as there are so many similarities. However there are some glaringly obvious differences that set it aside.
The main thing is that the soldiers to me are ok but NOT really Special Forces. I live in the Middle East and have come across a lot of military personnel and you don't have to be a brain surgeon to know the difference between a squaddie and a trained Special Forces guy.

You have the Team Leader played by Dennis Haysbert who just reminds me of a fabric softner teddy bear! He is shown getting soppy in the field and getting told off by Plod. Henno would have none of that!
Robert Patrick does a decent turn as the Colonel and Williams and Gray are woefully underused in favour of.....
.........the Wentworth Miller look-a-like who plays Bob Brown. Bland, and I have seen more ruthless bouncers at my local pub! At one point he has to do an escape and evasion and messes it up royally. He's meant to be a killing machine but instead of going all Jason Bourne, he goes all Clay Aitken and comes onto some old man. Would you find an SAS trooper doing that? If they did I wouldn't want to see it! What's even worse is when the others find out how he escaped he gets away with a mild ribbing. What's that all about?
The only one who resembles a special forces soldier in my eyes is Mac. He is the only one who seems to get flashes of anger, PTSD or has any issues at home. He seems to be consistently injured although it's always via blue on blue contact (again, not the best advert). He also is the only one in my opinion that even looks like he knows what he's doing.

As a Brit, seeing fighting men after a mission having a beer and actually discussing womens emotional issues is just farcical. What were the writers thinking???????

Second big difference is that this show spends as much time on the home front as on the front line. This may put some men off but actually get female viewers watching. Sometimes it's refreshing as they actually address some real issues of forces wives (kind of weird when it's only the women who say "train hard, fight easy"). More often than not though it's all about the next bake sale.
They spend so much time harping on about keeping the home fires burning that you keep expecting Vera Lynne to show up at one of their coffee mornings.
Most of them also look like models and although they whine about the pay they are dressed in their finest. But that's Hollywood right?
The leader of the women, Molly, is like Oprah and shoves tough love down the throats of the other wives. Bob's wife (so bland I don't remember her name) is just so lame I can't find words. Meeting with a potential attacker she is rescued by a hippy DJ. Did you learn nothing from your husband in how to defend yourself?
The saving grace again is Mac and his wife Tiffy. She makes things a whole lot more interesting by cheating on him (a complete rip off of Pete Twamley in UF and his wife).

I know there is a war on and that they don't want to be too harsh and kudos to them for not making arabs the bad guys in every episode but at the same time the show could be a lot more gritty.

      So why the 3 stars?
1 star = for the fact that despite all this (and you could blame the flu medication) during the 8th episode SEER I found myself rooting for the guys. It's kind of ironic though that the scariest episode is the one where they are tortured by their own side! It was also the point in the season where I got into the theme tune.
2nd star = The season finale is great and I actually ended it all thinking that I wanted to know what happens next.
3rd star = No matter what I say about realism etc etc I am still a girl and this star goes to Mac for taking his shirt off in nearly every episode! Good lad!

4 out of 5 stars Needs More Grit.......2007-08-27

An entertaining series for action addicts, but somewhat flawed.

Just how many of you would believe that elite Special Forces troops would happily parade their faces after an action and lose the necessary anonymity they require to do their job effectively ?. You wouldn't ?.

Hmm. Then why did the makers of this series think that the actors playing such troops would be representing them accurately by doing so fairly regularly in the show ?.

Overall, the series is an entertaining way to pass a few hours if you like things exploding, which sadly I do :).
