The Last Of The Mohicans [1992]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Last of the Mohicans is a large-scale adventure set during the colonial conflicts between Britain and France 20 years before the American War of Independence. Based loosely on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper, but actually inspired by director Michael (Manhunter, Heat) Mann's boyhood love of the 1936 film of the same name, this is rousing, romantic stuff. As "Hawkeye", a white raised by the last of the Mohican tribe, Daniel Day-Lewis delivers a performance which, had he followed it up, could have established him as an action hero for the 1990s and beyond. Despite an under-written role Madeline Stowe convinces as the heroine. The remaining cast are uniformly excellent. Filmed amid the spectacular mountains, rivers and forests of North Carolina by Mann's regular cinematographer, Dante Spinotti, the film is a visual joy, while Trevor Jones' majestic, spine-tingling score (with additional music by Randy Edleman) is one of the finest of the decade. Taking time to establish the motives of British and French colonists and the various native tribes, as well as the varying opinions and characters within these groupings, Mann offers much greater balance and complexity than The Patriot (2000), yet never looses sight of the object here: telling a stirring yarn laced with bold action set pieces and passionate romance.

On the DVD: The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image is a massive improvement over VHS, but still shows considerable grain in many scenes, possibly a result of the film being shot in low, natural light and containing many very dark sequences. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is very powerful, though little use is made of the rear channels, and in some scenes the sound effects all but drown out the dialogue. Isolated scores are usually only found on feature-packed special editions, so the inclusion here is a welcome surprise--and a testament to its popularity. The only other extra is an anamorphic 2.35:1 presentation of the immensely stirring theatrical trailer. --Gary S Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly good.......2008-02-16

Director Michael Mann (The Insider, Heat, Miami Vice) injects the entire story of The Last of the Mohicans with a sense of immediacy and scenic majesty. In the opening scene for example, he uses no dialogue for several lengthy minutes, and instead utilizes the scenery and score to draw us immediately into the story.

Based on the well-known 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper, this historical epic features a wide-sweeping story that encompasses a major event in Early American history. It also takes a more intimate look at a group of characters brought together by circumstance.

Michael Mann has directed only a handful of films in the past decade, so his name is hardly mentioned among the ranks of premier Hollywood directors. However, each of these three films stands as one of the best films of its respective year. Last of the Mohicans also utilizes his abilities to direct believable emotional drama in almost any situation. While the love story probably happens too fast and is a bit far-fetched, he makes it feel real.

The success of this film relates directly to the immense talents of its impressive cast. Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe are impressive; Wes Studi and Russell Means are excellent.

It surprises me to hear film lovers whom I respect describe Last of the Mohicans as boring, dull, and uninteresting. I find it impossible not to be drawn into this sweeping adventure even after repeated viewings. The story told here is universal, and speaks about love, honor, and family. The action occurs at a ferocious pace through numerous well edited scenes, and the melodic score carries the story to a higher level.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful and with a great soundtrack..........2007-10-11

It distorted somewhat (for the better) the original novel (which is a "classic" but quite difficult to read due to the contrived prose).
The exteriors are one of the best ever in a production of adventure&action films and the cast is PERFECT.

It is a savage land which makes for a sad and cruel "natural" story, after all it is untamed territory and the characters live dangerously.

The soundtrack is a must and contribute to the atmosphere like a close fitting glove.

One of my favorite period films. The action sequences are well directed and the use of weapons seems REAL.

Highly recommended as a very good film.

5 out of 5 stars TOMAHAWKS APLENTY.......2007-09-19

A good honest action film.

Daniel Day Lewis is a white man adopted by American Indians and brought up with the skills of his surrogate family. A few scalps are sent flying by aggressive Indians working the French (Boo) as they battle the British over American territory.

The action scenes are good, as is the soundtrack. Recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very involving picture with great scenery and great drama.......2007-09-15

Very strong and intense adaption of a novel I haven't read, so I can't comment on how accurate it is, but the film really draws you in, and this time Day Lewis is the perfect choice for the lead role, and he is in top form. The film uses a potent mix of action and drama to achieve a powerful and memorable movie, made more so by the location and the strong filmscore. The scenery was just breathtaking, and I was also impressed with the lack of political correctness in the tone of the film, which quite honestly I was expecting to be in, considering the subject and the year it was made in. In relation to similar films made in the last twenty years this movie feels like a breath of fresh air, and is probably a more realistic depiction of the way things were. Although brutally violent at times, and exhausting to watch, this film achieved real pathos at the end and is really quite moving.

5 out of 5 stars A thrilling adventure, fast-paced, as well as romantic and deeply poignant .......2007-07-25

A lot of people die in this big adventure story. They die for love, or out revenge, or out of hate, or out of pigheadedness. But this retelling of James Fennimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans is, in my view, a big success. Partly this is because it combines so effectively the sweep of frontier fighting with at least three love stories which are genuinely touching and one, very sad. Partly, it's because the actors all do wonderful jobs with their characters. And partly, because the director, Michael Mann, is able to combine so many elements of adventure and romance, yet he keeps things moving. There were no over-long scenes. Each scene served a purpose. And some of the scenes were great set pieces.

It's an old story about Haweye (Daniel Day-Lewis), raised by the Mohican Chingachugook (Russell Means) as his son along with Uncas (Eric Schweig), his other son. It's before the American Revolution and the French and Indian Wars are in play. Hawkeye meets Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe) and her sister, Alice (Jodhi May). A war-bent band of Mohawks led by Magua (Wes Studi) is determined to kill the English, and they have no love for the Mohicans. As the story plays out Hawkeye and Cora Munro fall in love. It's also plain that Uncas cares deeply for Alice, who is far too fragile for the frontier.

The adventure set pieces are so well done it's to Mann's credit that they don't stop the action. Among them are the march from a doomed fort with the Mohawks waiting to attack, and then the attack; the capture by the Mohawks of Cora, Alice and Major Heyward, Hawkeye's appearance and the judgement of the Mohawk chief; the canoe chase and the search for shelter behind a waterfall; the pursuit by Hawkeye, Cingachugook and Uncas up the mountain trail to catch Uncas and his band who have captured Cora and Alice.

And the dramatic pieces are just as powerful: Hawkeye and Cora, from two different worlds, gradually realizing they have feelings for each other; the sacrifice of Major Heyward and Hawkeye's action; Uncas' valiant, hopeless attempt to save Alice; Magua's hate turning to something that might be a puzzled feeling of...what?...toward Alice and then her decision; and the battle between Chingachugook and Magua.

Day-Lewis is great in his part, and Stowe matches him. Equally effective is Wes Studi as Magua. He has such a lean, chiseled face and carries himself with such resentfulness and hate. In a quieter role but just as effective is Russell Means. The end of the movie is this powerful combination of happiness for Hawkeye and Cora Munro and such stoic sadness for Chingachugook.

As you might tell, I like this movie. The DVD transfer is excellent.

James And The Giant Peach [1996]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Roald Dahl's modern classic for children becomes a delightful combination of live action and stop-motion animation by the team that made The Nightmare Before Christmas: director Henry Selick and producers Tim Burton (Batman) and Denise Di Novi. The story concerns young James (played for real and through voice-overs by Paul Terry), who is orphaned and left in the charge of two cruel aunts (Miriam Margolyes, Joanna Lumley). Rescued by a mysterious fellow (Pete Postlethwaite), James ends up inside a giant peach, drifting over the Atlantic Ocean in the company of a gentleman grasshopper (voiced by Simon Callow), a fast-talking centipede (Richard Dreyfuss), an anxious earthworm (David Thewlis), a matronly ladybug (Jane Leeves), and a sexy spider (Susan Sarandon). The collection of actors and their creepy-crawly alter egos are a delight, especially when some of the song-and-dance numbers (tunes are written by Randy Newman) get everyone going. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Captivating and fun..........2005-07-25

...are just two words I would use to describe this. I saw it yesterday for the first time, and was amazed how much fun it was. Great characterisation and animation, and the little boy is just scrummy!

My favourite (apart from James) was the Centipede, as I LOVE Richard Dreyfuss in anything. He was such a wise guy....

"That'll teach you to mess with me, you overgrown sardine - I'm from Brooklyn!"

How much I enjoyed this film just goes to show that I'm a big kid - 37 going on 7!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Film To Get Into The Imagination Of Children!.......2004-05-25

No one can really say that any of Roald Dahl's books or adaptations of books are 'normal', on the contrary, they are as far from normal as you can get without straying too far into the realms of sci-fi. Don't get me wrong though, this is definately a good thing as he manages to capture the minds and the imaginations of all the children who read and watch them.

When Jame's parents are killed by a huge rhinosorus, he is sent to live with two evil women, (presumably his aunts) who treat him like a slave and make him work like a dog all day and give him very little to eat. One day James is visited by a mysterious man who gives him one hundred green crocodile tounges and tells him to use them to make his dreams come true. Minutes later he has falled and all of the crocodile tounges have jumped away into the ground. Then, when a huge peach starts to grow from a supposedly dead tree, James realises that it was the crocodile tounges that are responsible and ventures into the huge fruit. There he meets six insects that have grown to be as big as him, and together they fly around the world on the peach, in search of New York City.

In this film there is a clever use of part real people, part animation which works really well, and is for most of the film seems it actually feels like a cartoon.

Overall this is a great adaptation of a very successful Roald Dahl novel and is sure to entertain children of all ages, and adults alike. If you have very hyperactive kids, then this is a great film to buy as it will keep them quiet for the whole time its on. A good choice if you or your children want some fun.

5 out of 5 stars *****WONDERFUL- a banquet for the Imagination*****.......2000-09-25

Superb animation , combined with the vocal skills of Joanna Lumley and Miriam Margoyles. My 5 year old with the "attention span of a gnat" was enthralled and absolutely quiet for the entire movie. A wonderful adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic. From the begining where James is under the thumb of his cruel aunts, through the magical journey with his fellow insect friends and his arrival in New York we were all captivated. A film that crosses both age and gender barriers. What more can I say.

Jurassic Park Trilogy: Ultimate Edition 4 DVD Boxset

Amazon.co.uk Review

It may have been over ten years since Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg's dinosaurs first trampled all over the global box office, and its sequels may have failed to fully match the standards set by the original. Yet the Jurassic Park Trilogy: Ultimate Edition still brings together a wildly entertaining trio of films, in a very welcome DVD collection.

The basics by now are well known. Eccentric billionaire John Hammond employs scientists to bring dinosaurs back to life, with fairly impressive results. Not everything goes to plan, though, and when his dinosaur-ravaged theme park eventually goes amok in the original Jurassic Park, it's a proper blockbuster rollercoaster ride, whose influence is still being felt in big budget Hollywood movies today.

The Lost World moves the action to Site B, a mysterious location where much of the behind-the-scenes work was done for the creation of the original theme park. That makes it extra dangerous, and again, is a fine excuse for some excellent set pieces. It's arguably the weakest of the three films, and it's certainly the flabbiest, but it still entertains, and entertains well.

Spielberg handed the director's chair over to Jumanji helmer Joe Johnston for the third film, and it proved a wise decision. Johnston keeps his running time brief, cutting out much of the back-story to focus on the lizard-based action. And save for a fairly sudden finale, he delivers the trademark Jurassic Park tension and rampaging action in spades.

In short, the Jurassic Park Trilogy: Ultimate Edition is a fitting testament to a trio of blockbuster movies, that are at worst entertaining, and at best, rip-roaring, high concept, big-budget movie making of real quality. Recommended.--Simon Brew

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good content, packaging lacklustre........2008-02-28

The collection comes in a regular 4-DVD box, rather than the nice fold-out sleeve pictured, which seems a bit of a cop-out on the presentation front.

Content extrmely good, as we know, the films are great entertainment, and the extras aren't half-bad either. The film quality is better than mentioned by one of the other reviews, looking particularly good on a sharp LCD screen. Don't expect it to perform on HD, but that's the beauty of those new TVs, they make your old films look worse so you buy them again...a lovely bit of self-marketing. In short, if you have a regular telly, don't worry about the picture quality, it looks just as you'd expect it to.

Well worth a purchase if you don't have these films.

Two thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Great idea - Extras disc could have been handled much better..........2008-01-18

For starters, I absolutely LOVED Jurassic Park (5/5), and quite enjoyed Jurassic Park: The Lost World (3/5) and Jurassic Park 3 (3/5). I'd never owned any of these on dvd before I bought this set, so to have the option to buy them all together like this was quite handy - and I got it for £7 in a sale, bargain.

That having been said, I found the extras disc to be a bit useless. For the most part, I found it to be very similar to the extras already included with each film. There were slight differences - and 1 or 2 new documentaries added, but certainly not enough to justify an entire extra disc.

Perhaps I'm holding my expectations a little high, but having owned the Special Editions of the Lord of the Rings films (those who own these sets will understand what I mean) - the level of the extras within this "Ultimate" edition of the JP Trilogy just dont stand up.

However, for the price - to be able to get all these films together in one set isn't that bad. Just be warned, if you already have these films seperately on DVD - DONT GET THIS SET FOR THE EXTRAS. It just isn't worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Great Idea But Low Quality.......2006-10-24

This set of discs is a great idea but is let down by the grainy transfers. The bitrate is low due to the amount of language soundtracks and only the last film has a DTS soundtrack. The films have also been cropped. Watching these on a a HD television shows up all the blockyness and flaws. There's better versions out there.

4 out of 5 stars Ingen Ingenious.............2006-01-21

When Jurassic Park was released 13 years ago I thought "wow", dinosaurs have been brought to life before my very eyes. Action packed, with great, lasting special effects the original Jurassic Park , became an instant classic.
The rampaging and fearsome T-Rex ripping it's way through Ingen's theme park and the highly intelligent raptors hunting in packs made the first film an exciting watch. The seccond film had equally impressive special effects and exciting action as we were taken to "The Lost World", despite the dissapointing loss of Sam Neil as Dr Alan Grant the enthusiastic paleontologist.
The third film, again provides us with lots of action and gives us the interesting adition of pterodactyls to the dino cast and Dr Alan Grant returns as desperate parents trick him into returning to Isla Sorna to search for their son who is lost on the island.
All brilliant action/adventure films and now availible all together in a boxset. An excellent purchase which will provicde hours of watching pleasure for older children and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars Takes me back to 1993 when Dinosaurs ruled the earth!!!.......2005-09-01

Everybodies seen Jurassic Park but if you hav'nt...what are you waiting for? Even looking back, it's amazing that a 12 year old film can still have such brilliant special effects. These dinosaurs LOOK REAL!!! You don't think of them as special effects but as actual creatures and Spielberg never lets you forget that their not just a bunch of monsters but animals. Great cast-Sam Niel, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenburgh are all excellent (a then little known Samuel L Jackson has a supporting role too!). The action is delivered with just the right amount of suspense. The end scene with the raptors is tops. 10/10
The Lost World is not bad but feels pretty uninspired. Jeff Goldblum as clown figure=great but his character as a leading man just dos'nt work and you can't help but want Sam Neil in his place. Julianne Moore and Pete Postlewait are much better but mainly the films just lukewarm as if Spielberg just wanted a film about people being chased by dinosaurs. The T-Rex and raptors are back and the really little ones have a scene stealing moment but on the whole it's not a patch on the original. 6/10
Jurassic Park 3 is much better. Joe Johnston dispenses with most the ethics subtext and concentrates on delivering a theme park ride of a movie. Short and sweet. The new dinosaurs are excellent Pterodons finally get an action scene after being introduced by Spielberg about 5 seconds before the end of the second film .Sam Neil is back reminding you just how great the first film was and the raptors are developed further and unlike the Lost World where they seened a bit foolish, come across as just as dangerous as in the original movie. The ending is a let down (I guess it was meant to be tense but it isn't coz we know the characters will survive) and theres a major cop out but overall a fun movie. 8/10
Great range of special features. Mainly on the effects. Theres a few things I would have liked to see-why does the Lost World disc contain the Dinosaur Encyclopedia for the creatures from the first film only? But overall this is near enough to be truly considered the Ultimate Edition of these films. Great. And the price dos'nt hurt for what you get too!

Aeon Flux The Movie [2005]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Like the animated series it's based on, Aeon Flux is the kind of sci-fi that's best appreciated by the MTV generation. It's a serious attempt at stylized, futuristic action/adventure (the title character, played by Charlize Theron, is essentially a female James Bond for the cyberpunk era) and taken for what it is, it's not all that bad. The action takes place in the year 2415, four centuries after a virus nearly decimated the human race, leaving only five million survivors in a utopian city called Bregna. Aeon belongs to the Monicans, a secret rebel resistance force that is struggling to destroy the Goodchild regime led by its namesake, Trevor Goodchild (Martin Csokas), the ruler of Bregna and a descendant of the man who found a cure for the deadly virus. As instructed by the Handler (Frances McDormand, gamely playing along in ridiculous sci-fi regalia), Aeon is assigned to assassinate Goodchild, but there are deeper secrets to be discovered, and conspiracies to be foiled. This leads director Karyn Kusama (who fared much better with her debut feature Girlfight) to indulge in all sorts of routine action and fast-paced gunplay, but the elusive pleasures of Aeon Flux are mostly found in the sleek athleticism of Theron and costar Sophie Okonedo (as a fellow Monican), who commit themselves 100% to roles that are dramatically flat yet physically dynamic.

Other highlights include Aeon's high-tech gadgetry (including an eyeball that doubles as a microsocope) and the amusing sight of Pete Postlethwaite in a costume resembling a construction-site disposal tube, but Flux fans may wonder what happened to the surreal, chromium sheen future that gave the MTV series its visionary appeal. As a live-action feature, Aeon Flux is a miscalculated exercise in cheesy style and dour tone, but it's entertaining enough to earn a small cadre of admirers. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Possibly not one to watch over and over again.......2008-02-11

After reading the 1 star reviews on here I though I better add something of an opinion because although not the best sci-fi film ever it doesn't deserve just one star. I found the acting to be fine, people who complain about the acting should perhaps stick to more gritty realism films. One of my favourite films is Star Wars but you probably wouldn't say Mark Hamill's acting is awesome either, I can think of other classic sci-fi which suffer from some slightly dodgy acting, but that doesn't make them bad films. The story of Aeon Flux is one of cloning after a virus wipes out 99% of the population. In that respect there is serious sci-fi credibility. It does stretch the imagination in other respects and there are some strange moments when the film seems to lose the plot but after watching I wasn't baffled by the whole premise like some reviewers. Perhaps they should stick to Disney. It doesn't get 5 stars as I cannot see myself watching it again in a hurry unlike the aforementioned Star Wars. It also loses another star for some silly moments such as the explosive balls which roll around in response to Aeons whilstling and the fact that there is little backstory to the characters. However as a one off sci-fi watch I found my evening quite well spent.

4 out of 5 stars "Why do I know you? Why?".......2007-10-15

What a surprise this movie was! I never intended to watch this film, but when a friend lent me the DVD I decided to go ahead and try it out, expecting an action flick with a simple plot, and not much else. Instead I found a superb story with enough intrigue and suspense to keep our interest intact throughout its duration, and some nice action to boot.

The action takes place in the twenty-fifth century, 400 years after civilization was almost wiped out by a virus and only some survived thanks to a discovery by Trevor Goodchild. The survivors live in a fortified city called Bregna and are monitored at all times from a central command. There is a group, called Monicans, that believes that something is not right in this society, and they have sent Aeon to murder chairman Goodchild. Up to this point, it all looks like straightforward science fiction, but when Aeon and Goodchild meet, things will get complicated, and a rich and enthralling storyline surfaces.

There are several things I liked about this movie apart from its outstanding plot. The futuristic city presented in the film was craftily created, and I could not help feeling as if I was looking at a modern version of Ancient Rome. I also enjoyed the action scenes, which involve a considerable degree of acrobatic skill. In this sense, I would say that there were some similarities with "The Matrix", and even the story line can be thought of as comparable to this masterpiece. Finally, I think that Charlize Theron delivered a very good performance, which should put her in the short-list of successful female action figures, such as Lara Croft.

It is always great when I start watching a movie without any expectations of it being very good and I end up having one hell of a time. People that enjoy science fiction with a good amount of action and complex plots will definitely have a similar experience.

5 out of 5 stars sci fi great !!.......2007-09-16

after seeing some of the reviews on here , i was a bit worried the film was going to be a let down.but after watching it i was pleasantly surprised ... a great sci-fi film ...just one picky thing i thought the ending was a bit too quick !! well worth buying !!

1 out of 5 stars GIVING THIS A (1) IS WAY TOO MUCH.......2007-08-15

I really like Charlize Theron as an actress and was really impressed with Monster. The power and emotion that came across in that film was superb. Also being a huge fan of sci fi I was really looking forward to this film.

But OMG this was terrible beyond terrible. The acting was shockingly bad, there was below zero chemistry between to two lead characters. In the end I just couldn't wait for this to finish.

The story line has weight and should of come across well on cinema, but I just can't get across how bad this is. Please don't waste almost two hours of your life with this, your life is worth much much more than this.

5 out of 5 stars Flux tastic!.......2007-06-14

If you liked Equillibrium, and like lovely ladies knocking the bejesus out of people your gonna love this. Its like Daniel Craig in a girl suit, only better looking. Theron plays a blinder, loads of action, and a reasonable story line. Well worth watching, have watched it 4 times on Sky, so decided had better get it on DVD. A great film, well worth having in the collection.

This box set contains both versions of The Italian Job--the original 60s classic starring Michael Caine and the 2003 remake, featuring Mark Wahlberg.

5 out of 5 stars very good first film and an ok 2nd film!.......2007-05-15

The dvd boxset is great and for the price is worth it! The first film is excellent and is played out well by the actors and actresses! It is a fun film with the Classic best british car to date, the Mini! Shame that the sequal to it was never produced, but the re make of the film I thought was just average and the story line could've been made better. I thought the car scenes could've been longer and the ending a little better, but still, it was decent enough to watch!

4 out of 5 stars A remake with potential.......2005-01-05

The original Italian Job is without doubt a classic piece of British acting, worthy of enternal praise. The remake isn't! However, no remake of a classic is going to live up to the original (although Oceans 11 is close), and this new film is still entertaining and does a reasonable job at keeping true to the original intent and story line. Ok, so Hollywood has gotten involved and made this a big picture production, but the limited cast and action sequences are still good and mostly believable (although the helicopter chase scene does go ott).

I liked it, and the box set offers you the chance to see both films in one evening. Not bad and worth a look

Howl's Moving Castle [2005]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Like a dream, Howl's Moving Castle carries audiences to vistas beyond their imaginations where they experience excitement, adventure, terror, humor, and romance. With domestic box office receipts of over $210 million, Howl passed Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke to become the #3 film in Japanese history, behind his Spirited Away and James Cameron's Titanic.

Based on a juvenile novel by Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle marks the first time Miyazaki has adapted another writer's work since Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Sophie, a 19-year-old girl who believes she is plain, has resigned herself to a drab life in her family's hat shop--until the Witch of the Waste transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. In her aged guise, Sophie searches for a way to break the Witch's spell and finds unexpected adventures. Like Chihiro, the heroine of Spirited Away, Sophie discovers her hidden potential in a magical environment--the castle of the title.

Using CG, Miyazaki creates a ramshackle structure that looks like it might disintegrate at any moment. Sophie's honesty and determination win her some valuable new friends: Markl, Howl's young apprentice; a jaunty scarecrow; Calcifer, a temperamental fire demon; and Heen, a hilarious, wheezing dog. She wins the heart of the dashing, irresponsible wizard Howl, and brings an end an unnecessary and destructive war. The film overflows with eclipsing visuals that range from frightening aerial battles to serene landscapes, and few recent features--animated or live action--offer as much magic as Howl's Moving Castle.--Charles Solomon

3 out of 5 stars Howling over "Howl's moving castle".......2008-02-26

I had high expectations for this movie, particularly as the movie's creators were those responsible for "Spirited Away". Unfortunately my high expectations were not met with this movie and I found the storyline and characters extremely weak and disappointing. I had to take breaks from the movie because I found it at times, rather dull and a tad boring. It failed to capture my attention as "Sprited Away" had done.
Although I consider this film worth watching, I do not think that it deserved the credit and positive publicity it received.
"Spirited Away" is a fantastic movie and in comparison to "Howl's moving castle" it is in an entirely different league of quality. As long as viewers do not expect "Howl's Moving Castle" to be of the high standard of "Spirited Away", then they should not be too disappointed.
I would give "Howl's Moving Castle" 3/5, while "Spirited Away" deseves 5/5

4 out of 5 stars Another Ghibli Classic.......2008-02-01

Along the lines of Spirited Away, this film has the charm, humour, great storytelling and good animation quality that marks a Studio Ghibli film. The plot is interesting and involved and makes a great watch. The ending seems a little rushed, but it doesn't detract much.

Not quite as good as Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away, but still a great film.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning!.......2008-01-28

I was given this DVD as a gift for my children, and thought - right, cartoon. It will keep them occupied for a couple of hours. How wrong could I possibly be. This has to be - without doubt - the most stunningly drawn animated film I have ever seen. The light, the colour, the movement of the water when Sophie is sitting beside it... It is quite incredible, and when you have a story which is by turns funny, slightly scary, and very moving, that will appeal to children and adults alike.... If you haven't seen this film you're in for a treat. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A breathtaking film and one of Miyazaki's best........2008-01-19

I've been a fan of Miyazaki's work since I first saw My Neighbour Totoro and Porco Rosso during a mid-90's double bill and fell in love with the intricate stories, simply, yet larger than life characters, and the always breathtaking visuals. A recent Film Four retrospective on the work of Miyazaki and the famed Studio Ghibli has given me the opportunity to reacquaint myself with some of his earlier works, which has really been great preparation for readying myself for a second helping of this!!

Howl's Moving Castle is loosely based on the well-known book of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones, with Miyazaki and his collaborators opening up and elaborating on the text in order to incorporate many of the more recognisable Studio Ghibli trademarks. So, whereas the book once focused more clearly on the character of Howl, a wizard of dubious reputation, Miyazaki puts more emphasis on the character of Sofi, a heroine in the classic Studio Ghibli tradition. As the story unfolds the changes in the text point back to that earlier Miyazaki classic Porco Rosso, with the film continuing the idea of a character transformed by a curse (in this case, the young Sofi is cursed into the body of an old hag), seeking redemption in a anachronistic universe sometime during the First World War, that is overrun with flying machines, magical potions and other such Ghibli-like touches, such as fire demons, witchcraft and supernatural underworlds.

As with Porco Rosso, the film's setting and the use of iconography suggest deeper themes that most children probably won't pick up on, meaning that this is very much a film to be cherished by adults and adolescents too!! As with all Miyazaki's work, the animation is astounding, here advancing on the lush visuals of previous film Spirited Away to create perhaps the most jaw-dropping animated film ever made (though Mamuro Oshii's Ghost in the Shell 2 and Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy are both serious contenders). The colours are rich and vivid throughout, whilst the attention to even the most minute of period detail is impeccable, all adding to that sweeping Miyazaki grace, his feel for characters and his deft understanding of how to construct a sequence (both in terms of action and drama... making the film both magical and plausible in equal measures!!).

Howl's Moving Castle might be a little too obscure and sober for some viewers, especially when compared to some of Miyazaki's more celebrated works, such as My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service, however, some perseverance reveals it to be every bit as memorable and beautiful as those two films, whilst the subtle references to early Miyazaki works like The Castle of Cagliostro and Laputa - Castle In The Sky make it an integral and equally magical entry into the Ghibli/Miyazaki canon.

1 out of 5 stars utter drivel.......2005-10-22

I've been surfing for most of my life, and this film depresses me more than words. Utter sold-out commercial junk, representing the worst mcdonalds-isation of the sport I love that I've ever seen.

High production values, terrible acting (surfers just can't act - I'm still scarred by Kelly Slater in Baywatch)and a plot that would be embarrased to be used for a porn film this film plumbs a low that even , well, I can't even think of something that bad.

If you still think surfers have blond hair and exclusivly wear quiksilver clothing, drive VW beetles and say 'dude' you'll probably love it. If you have salt-water in your veins, travelled, surfed, been to these places it'll drive you to tears.

If you want a real film showing the real life 'on the road' (ugh) then check out some of the grass roots indie surfing films popping up. Land of Saints, (landofsaints.com) is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Why I don't love country music.........2005-02-06

Whether you've actually ever caught a green wave in your life, or simply enjoy the t-shirts and silly hair-cuts, chances are that you've been sufficiently exposed to (a version of) surf culture..and must therefore accept that to both wannabes and bona-fide wave sliders, the notion of surfing as metaphor for life is..at worst a well-worn cliche, but at best probably not such a bad metaphor at all really, especially if a sizeable part of your life does still revolve around the pursuit of evenly peeling walls of water. Why I love this film..Surfing has undergone many important changes since the acclaimed flick "Big Wednesday" (a lame and ludicrously cheesy offering in my humble view..despite a brief section affording us a glimpse of some impressive footwork in a nose-riding segment. One lone critic described the dialogue as being as wet as the waves they were riding)and I can't think of any other non-documentary film that has at least attempted to explore some of the more contemporary developments in surfing (namely tow-in surfing)in such an accesible and (allowing for a certain ammount of 'cheese') intelligent manner (I'm referring to the tow-in vs. paddle-in debate).Suspend certain of your critical faculties, accept the 'cheese' and enjoy the spectacle of professional surfers trying to act, while doing what few mortal actors could ever do! Non-surfers please note that the lead roles are actually played by pro-surfers, and they don't do too bad a job either (of acting! Their surfing's not bad either!)

1 out of 5 stars if youre a surfer youl hat this film.......2003-09-29

This film is lousy its so cheesy and commercialised, the acting is really bad and the storline is poor. Theres some good footage of large waves but if thats what youre after buy a proper surfing video like endless summer 2, september sessions etc. This is what hollywood thinks surfing is like and boy how wrong they are. If i could give this film a minus rating i would do.

4 out of 5 stars A big wave film.......2000-10-25

I have seen some films about surfing. This is made for surfers by surfers, It's all about big waves , three friends and the search. I liked it very much, the scenes are spectacular. May be when Keoni is hill, it is a little paranoic, but the rest is very good. I hope you like it.There is a phrase in the film: "The waves you cath in your beach are less dangerous than the middle of the waves in other places are , how far do you want to go in surfing? . For me is like "the truth is out there" in X-Files.

Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean's central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg.

On the DVD: Sharpe on DVD contains a photo gallery and several screens of background text. The sound is full-bodied stereo while the very "sharp" picture has been transferred slightly letterboxed at 14:9. Though looking much better than the original TV transmissions the occasionally cropped framing makes it apparent the films were shot in 16:9 widescreen, so it is regrettable they have not been transferred to DVD in that format. Otherwise these are first-rate releases. --Gary S Dalkin

4 out of 5 stars Sharpe's Company.......2005-02-23

After the siege of Cuidad Rodrigo, Wellington plans to lay siege to Badajoz. A new draft arrives from England with Col. Windham and Capt. Rymer. Windham is embarrassed to have a man from the ranks in his command, so Sharpe is humiliated by being made Quartermaster and taken away from the chosen men. Cue Sharpe/Bean to get that 'mad dog' look like a Napoleonic Dirty Harry. Adding insult to injury, the man who had Sharpe flogged years before, Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, appears and promptly tries to rape the mother of Sharpe's daughter. Not a good idea - cue fisty cuffs and more mad dog Sharpe.

So the story continues of Sharpe vs. Hakeswill and Sharpe trying to get back in charge of his chosen men together with his captaincy.

As with all the Sharpe films, the only let down is the woefully few extras trying to make major battle scenes look convincing. Bean is great as a working class hero fighting the caste system and the best bits are always his brushes with gentleman fops who look the part but who don't have any idea what real soldiering is about. The films try very hard to be historically correct but in my opinion fall short of the Cornwell books by virtue of their short two hour length. Having said that, Sharpe's Company is one of the better film versions and is well worth a look.

Sharpe's Enemy:
This is Sharpe vs Hakeswill part II and more of Sharpe having to take the scorn of superior officers before making them eat their words. Liz Hurley also appears as a bit of crumpet and makes you wonder how she ever made it big.

5 out of 5 stars Again the simple plot work the best!.......2003-02-02

Sharpe's Company:-
Sharpe gets sent on a mission but plans go awry. Some fop of an officer insults Sharpe not realising he too is an officer (Officer gets hit / killed / earful of abuse). Sharpe gets off with a bird. Sharpe gets shot /stabbed. Sharpe saves the day. The End.

Sharpe's Enemy:
Sharpe gets sent on a mission but plans go awry. Some fop of an officer insults Sharpe not realising he too is an officer (Officer gets hit / killed / earful of abuse). Sharpe gets off with two birds (one of them Liz Hurley). Sharpe gets shot /stabbed. Sharpe saves the day. The End.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant drama, with excellent attention to detail.......2002-06-11

In Sharpe, Bernard Cornwell, has created a masterpiece of historic re-enactment. Everything from the unforms and weapons, to the regiment "women" is painstakingly accurate. Sean Bean, who plays our hero Sharpe, could almost be seen as an eighteenth centuary James Bond. A love interest is never too far away, and as predictable as an Ian Fleming novel, Sharpe always gets his leading lady. This is a superb film and with the added extras of DVD makes this an excellent addition to any collection.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT DINO FUN.......2007-08-07

I have to say, I really, REALLY, enjoy this film. Sure it ain't art, and after Schindler's List, that may be considered a bit of a disappointment for critics and followers of Spielberg, but boy is this film great fun and not only that, the film follows its own sense of fun too. Check out T-Rex destroying San Diego and the homages thrown throughout to the Godzilla movies as well as a cameo from the film's scriptwriter being eaten. I'm sorry, but for me this is representative of what going to the movies is sometimes about. Having a fun time. I'd almost go out on a limb and say it was better than the first film.

Okay that may be a bit strong, but I find there so much more to enjoy here. As much as I love the first film, there is a wee bit of sentimentality about it. Having the child hater turn into a father figure played a big part in the first film, but as Spielberg has upped the ante here as well as include more dinosaurs and more elaborate action sequences there isn't as much room for the 'family' margin, even though that gets a look in too. Nope, this is not about Spielberg the filmmaker, this is about Spielberg the entertainer. He's not aiming for Oscars here, instead it's all about creating a thrill packed ride which is what we get. There are many a classic action-horror moment here. The moment where all that separates the character of Sarah (Julianne Moore) from imminent death is a sheet of glass is one of the most nerve wracking moments committed to film, while the Raptor attack in the field is undeniably sheer genius and the ending where San Diego gets flattened by the T-Rex itself is so much fun and contains so much going on that it's worthwhile watching the film again.

With an increase in the violent content (how this only got a PG in Britain is beyond me, a 12 or even 15 would have been more appropriate) this is indicative at the same time of Spielberg's darker sensibilities coming out of him. Unlike Jurassic Park there are no scenes set in blazing sun shine, instead we get lots of rain and dark clouds covering each moment, while Kaminski's photography enhances the more darker look of the film. The death scenes are more elaborate here. Why have one T-Rex eat a hapless victim when you can have two and when you have a waterfall why not have blood ooze from it when a victim is eaten. Yep, it's almost like Temple Of Doom all over again.

I know the film has its haters, but this is one film that I find hugely entertaining. While the novelty factor of the CGI does not flood the film so much here, the more ruthless action sequences more than makes up for it. It's a Hollywood blockbuster. It is supposed to be fun.

5 out of 5 stars jp2.......2005-06-21

Jurassic Park was one of the best movies i had ever seen and when i fist saw it i was amazed how good it was. Now the sequel it to me is about the same kinda goodness as the first but watch it and you will see what i mean plus have you seen the cover its absloutaly wicked. And also the sequel to this is worth seeing

3 out of 5 stars Far Inferior Sequel.......2005-03-01

Dr. Malcolm is surprised to learn that there is another island full of dinosaurs. He's even more surprised when he learns that his girlfriend has gone to the island to study the dinosaurs in their natural environment. Convinced she's in danger, he sets out to rescue her.

Meanwhile, another group arrives on the island, intent on capturing the creatures for a theme park in San Diego. When the two groups meet, ciaos ensues, and suddenly it's a fight for survival against these ancient beasts. Who will get off the island this time?

To my surprise, I enjoyed the first movie and looked forward to this one. I made the mistake of reading the book first, however. While the first one was a decent adaptation of the book, this movie tried too much to do it's own thing. And the story suffers as a result. Don't get me wrong; there are some great action scenes. The trailer sequence is especially a favorite. But most of the time, it doesn't hold up to the book or the first movie. And don't even get me started on the ending.

The first movie will be considered a classic monster film. This movie left much to be desired. Just another example of how bad sequels can be.

4 out of 5 stars Crichton, Spielberg, and Goldblum go back to Jurassic Park.......2005-01-27

"The Lost World: Jurassic Park" is based on the novel by Michael Crichton, but that would only be part of the novel "The Lost World" because most of it ends up in "Jurassic Park III." In a lot of ways this film is actually closer to Arthur Conan Doyle's version of "The Lost World," where humans enter a prehistoric world, whilce Crichton's purpose was to look at the dark side of Walt Disney. But all this really means is that neither movie is the original "Jurassic Park," and given that standard any sequel is going to be disappointing.

The story is that Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), the chaos mathematician and Cassandra of the first film, is back amongst the dinosaurs even though he does not want to be. But his girlfriend, Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) is already on Island B and so Ian is off to the rescue. The idea is that in addition to the island with Jurassic Park on it John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) had a second island, Isla Sorna, where dinosaurs were also being bred and allowed to run around with even more liberty (to wit, no electrical fences or any other barriers). So Ian joins Sarah, nature photographer Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn), gadget expert Eddie Carr (Richard Schiff), and to everyone's surprise, Ian's daughter Kelly (Vanessa Lee Chester).

The group has enough problems when they make the mistake of rescuing a baby T-Rex with a broken leg, but then Hammond's nephew, Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard) shows up with legendary big game hunter Roland Tembo (Pete Postlehwaite) and his merry men. Ludlow wants to round up some dinosaurs to take back to the San Diego Zoo while Tembo wants the chance of a lifetime to hunt and bag a T-Rex buck. Malcolm keeps warning everybody that death and screaming is the inevitable result of fooling around with Mother Nature when it comes to bio-genetically engineered dinosaurs, but if anybody listened to him where would the fun be?

For me the reference point is the T-Rex attack sequence in "Jurassic Park," which I think is, from a cinematic standpoint, the best in director Stephen Spielberg's career. Anything that happens in a dinosaur movie, whether it is by Spielberg or anybody else, gets judged against the standard of that sequence. I still have a vivid memory of sitting in the theater at the first midnight showing of the film watching that sequence and thinking it would terrify my son, who was still in grade school, and how would I ever explain to him that he could not see this movie? (He saw the movie, I got him a neon bedspread that we still have, and he wants to be a military historian, so it turned out okay). The bottom line with "The Lost World" is that there is nothing like that here.

The best sequence in the film is actually somewhat tangential to the dinosaurs, having to do with a vehicle on the side of a cliff. There is also a very effective shot of a group of velociraptors moving through the high grass to start picking off the harried survivors. But if we are talking about anything as terrifying as that original T-Rex attack sequences, then there is nothing close. For that matter we are, for the most part, missing the sense of shock and awe over the presence of real, living, and breathing, dinosaurs that you can see and touch. The first time we see dinosaurs in this film, a family of stegosaurs, is not even close to that same moment in the first film. But then most of the characters in the film treat the dinosaurs like commodities or special effects. The only two characters who really seem like they are interacting with real dinosaurs are Sarah and Tembo, although their positions on the beasties are polar opposites. It could simply be because Moore and Postlehwaite are the two best actors in the film, each working to make potentially stereotypical characters (damsel in distress, big game hunter) into something more realistic. Goldblum is still too much of the anti-hero to be an action star, but fortunately the film does not try to make him into one.

"The Lost World" is still enjoyable because it is still Spielberg on the other side of the camera running the show and even while there are comic moments he does not back off from the fact that these animals are more than willing to gobble up people (sometimes he combines the comedy and eating as with the dog in the backyard who has to guard the house against a T-Rex). Spielberg made the movie because of the final sequence, which gets a dinosaur off the island and back to California for some mayhem in the streets and if the film was going to bump up to the next level that was where it gets to happen, but the end result is pretty pedestrian (actually, lots of pedestrians, as well as people in cars and buses). Still, it is a Stephen Spielberg dinosaur movie, which is not a bad way to spend an evening in the safety of your own home.

4 out of 5 stars better than jurassic park 3.......2004-07-07

i noticed alot of people writing reviews about this film and saying that it is worse than the third film!OMG these people obviously dont know what there talkin about and have no experience with special effects or otherwise, where i studied it at university, no jurassic park can beat the first but this film is a good sequel, it has loads more dinos, loads more special fx n loads more action, what more do you need? ALiens attackin out of the blue?!! its not meant to be so realistic you must criticise frame! the third film is so rubbish because since when can we learn how to talk raptor througha skull (and have a conversation) now that is stupid and they went to far, they should of stopped at number 2.the only disappointing thing for me is the fact that only malcom returns (jeff goldbloom) for this film with his annoying way of talking, if you love dinos then this is a must!!
