The Long walk home takes us to the period of American history when the Black uprising was just taking root.
Whoopi Goldberg plays Odessa, maid to the Thompson family and mother to her own. She is very close to their young daughter who is narrating the story and has been with the family for 9years. However, when Rosa Parks chooses not to give up her seat on the bus for a white man it has knock on effects throughout the country.

In Montgomery the Blacks decide to boycott the buses and walk everywhere. This means Odessa starts getting late to work and is always exhausted which takes a toll on her work and family life.
Mrs Thompson (Sissy Spacek) is a woman ahead of her time and doesn't believe in the wrongful treatment of people based on their colour. She soon begins to go against her husbands wishes and drives Odessa and other people around.
The movie explores the effects of the boycott on the two womens lives and families as well as their relationship with each other and, even to some extent, themselves. The movie culminates in a final stand-off between the citizens of Montgomery which is emotional in it's combined ferocity and gentle/simple outcome.

A beautiful film that doesn't aim to be overly melodramatic in the portrayal of events from one of the defining moments in history.
