Fabulous, fabulous film.......2002-03-26
The story is very good, with a well acted script and some great characters, like Vincent Price's cameo role as Mr Moraliy, a strange preacher.
Pity that this film is not as well known as Jailhouse Rock or Blue Hawaii; its probably better than both of them, and deserves to be rated alongside his best films (King Creole, Flaming Star, Wild in the Country).
A Great Film.......2002-03-23
It's easy going and very very good, as Elvis, playing the manager of a travelling show seems to care less about the financial status and failings of the company.
Surrounded by excellent actors, plus Elvis as good as he ever has been in a film, I rate this right next to Flaming Star, Wild in the Country, King Creole and Change of Habit.
A Hidden Gem.......2002-03-01
This is the full version, not the hacked up edit that has been slammed by critics over the years.
Elvis is Walter Hale, manager of a 1920s travelling troupe of entertainers who are encountering problems during a stop-over in a small town.
Hale's devil may care attitude, combined with a slump in ticket sales, a bossy shop-steward and now a murder blamed on a shifty card-sharp.
The cast is stellar, plus cameos from horror movie supremos Vincent Price and John Carradinen and Elvis at his coolest.
There are lots of excellent characters, especially some talented kids, a nasty shop keeper and his employee whom he is seducing and offering money for favours.
Check out the scene where Hale tries to seduce his female shop steward in the deserted big top. A box of fireworks accidentally go off, as he propositions her and suggest that they use a local girl for financial gain.
Hilarious as she calls Hale a dirty b@$%a~d and mother-f~**$r amidst a barrage of slaps and punches.
Some excellent music to. Elvis on stage singing the classic 'Swing Down sweet Chariot' with a gospel quartet. Plus the country rock 'Clean Up Your Own Back Yard' and beautiful scene with El in an empty tent, on piano alone.
This is just a pleasure to watch, one of my favourite films....especially when they try to sober up a drunk woman who.........well watch and enjoy, I highly recommend this.
