Scooby Doo 2 - Monsters Unleashed [2004]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The animated pooch detective returns in Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which packs a wealth of ghostly villains from the Saturday morning cartoon into one movie. When Mystery Inc. opens a museum exhibit of costumes of their old foes, a new masked foe appears and steals everything--and before you know it, all the costumes come to life, chasing Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), and the computer-animated Scooby Doo all over Coolsville. It's no better or worse than the first Scooby Doo movie. Watching live-action scenes that you've previously seen in two dimensions is vaguely uncanny; it's like deja vu turned inside out. Also featuring the weirdly unsynchronized lips of Alicia Silverstone, Seth Green, and Peter Boyle. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Much Better than the First Scooby Doo movie.......2007-06-23

The first Scooby Doo movie was pleasantly watchable fun. Scooby Doo 2 is better. It has a much stronger plot with real menace at times, a better script, more impressive effects, and better characterisation. I am very impressed by it as a family fun film.

4 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed It More Then the First.......2007-02-22

It's a big night in Coolsville. A museum is opening and its main exhibit is a tribute to the Mysteries, Inc. gang featuring the costumes of many of the creatures they've defeated over the years. Naturally, everyone is on hand for the opening. But things don't go smoothly. Much to everyone's shock, the Pterodactyl Ghost comes to life and starts flying around the museum. When Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby-Doo try to stop it, they make a mess of the museum.

Fred (Freddie Prinz, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Velma (Linda Cardellini) immediately spring into action trying to figure out how and why the monster came to life. The obvious suspect is Old Man Wickles (Peter Boyle), a former foe just released from jail.

When more of their former foes come to life, the townspeople turn against the gang. Can they stop the monsters, stay alive, and solve the mystery?

I haven't seen many of the cartoon episodes, but this movie actually made me wish I had. These monsters were creepy yet cool at the same time. Overall, the story was much better then the original movie with several viable suspects. Shaggy and Scooby attempt to shed their goofy image and gather actual clues, but on the whole, the gang even works together this time. Once again, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini are the standouts of the cast, while Seth Green and Alicia Silverstone are great additions this time around.

This sequel should appeal more to fans of the series. While forgettable, it's also good for a couple hours entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2006-08-06

If you watched the first movie or the scooby doo cartoon series on which this is based, you'll know what to expect. Monsters and ghouls with a human face behind them. This movie is more of the same. That's not to say it's bad, it's not. It's quite entertaining and has some unexpected twists and turns. What lets it down is the amount of padding in between the action.
It's still worth a watch. Good family entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!!!.......2005-06-22

Having been born in 1983 I grew up watching the "proper" cartoons, you no the sort the ones you could tell wern't real cause you could see the strings! As such you had to use your imagination to make the most of them.

Scooby Doo 2 keeps the feel of the original cartoons and shows the gang growing as a group and individuals, at points the story is obvious the love story between two members of the Gang (wont tell you who though) being one of them! But it is still a feel good movie that can stir the imagination.

The only bad review I have seen for this Movie says its "a no brainer" I would have to argue this film lays the foundations you have to use your imagination to make it into something special. Kids these days are not encouraged to use there imagination enough but this movie tries its best.

Oh yeah and Scooby Doo rocks :-). Even though the CGI (Computer Generate Image) did at times look unreal Scooby was still as loveable as ever wish my dog was like that! lol!

Rent it or buy it even if you don't have kids at home anymore cause it will still make you laugh!

Scooby Doo - Live Action Movie [2002]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Ghosts haunting spooky old factories? Hip kids being brainwashed? The Darkopalypse about to engulf the world? Scooby-Doo, where are you? But the gang have all fallen out and dissolved the Mystery Inc partnership for good. Jinkeys! Luckily a strange invitation to solve a mystery on Spooky Island has unwittingly reunited the now-flopped members of the team. Can ghoul-getting gang get along again?

The latest in a long line of live-actioned-up retro cartoon faves, Scooby-Doo features superb action set-pieces and seamlessly blended live actor/CGI interaction--our eponymous hero is rendered with particular panache. What's more, the special effects are backed by a scarily well-written script and some frighteningly good performances. The Buffy-tastic Sarah Michelle Gellar was born to be Daphne, and Matthew Lillard is show-stealing as the dream-to-play Shaggy. The characters themselves are darkly developed--Fred is now a vain egotist, Velma a last-picked-at-sport geek and Daphne a Clueless-style airhead. Happily, Shaggy and Scooby are still a pair of snack-happy gormless goofs for whom friendship outweighs all else.

Scooby-Doo manages to be great fun for the kids without neglecting the fans of the original (1969!) series. Alongside the fun, frights and frantic action are clever in-jokes and even a few hints at some rather adult goings on--Shaggy getting "toasted" in a smokey hippy-style camper van may explain why he's always so peckish. Throw in a surprise appearance from a love-to-hate familiar face, some Charlie's Angels-style wire work and a storming rap-rock soundtrack and this'll frighten the life out of the competition. If you're thinking of missing it--Scooby-Don't.

On the DVD: Scooby-Doo is beautifully realised in this anamorphic widescreen transfer--the picture is crisp, the colour dazzling and the sound crystal-clear. The menu screen is entertainingly presented with plenty of extras to explore. Highlights include the "Daphne Fight Scene", the Outcast music video and the "making-of" short "Unmasking the Mystery", which features a rare appearance from an ancient Joseph Barbera and reveals the cast and crew to be a personable, fun-loving bunch. The real stand-out here, though, is the "Alternative Scenes" section. The dropped scenes--which include a superb cartoon intro sequence--really add an extra level of understanding to the film, and one suspects that it's only because of today's attention-span challenged audiences that some of the best bits ended up on the cutting-room floor. --Paul Eisinger

4 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED.......2007-08-18

Scooby-Doo is a worthy live action film to a brilliant original T.V. show

Plot: The Mystery Inc. gang have split up and are each off on their own, only Scooby-Doo (Voice of Neil Fanning) and Shaggy (Matthew Lilard) remain together and they own the Mystery Machine. They are called back into action when a strange man shows up and invites them to Spooky Island to solve a mystery. They are convinced when he mentions an all you can eat buffet and are on their way to the airport. There they run into the rest of the gang, Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Velma (Linda Cardellini), and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Still resenting each other they refuse contact and once on the island they meet the owner, Emile Mondavariours (Rowan Atkinson) who informs them of the problem. He believes that somebody is casting a spell on the visitors who come to his resort. Starting off on looking for clues by themselves the gang realizes after a attack that they need to put their differences aside and team up if they ever want to solve the mystery.

The Good News: This being the motion picture film to a T.V. series that spawned thousands of imitators it had a lot to live up to and it delivers. Since it was released people have bashed this film to pieces, but if you take a minutes and look at it closely it is a pretty underrated film. The actors all do an outstanding job at bringing the gang to life. At first glance Freddie Prinze Jr. may seem like the wrong choice, but he fills Fred's shoes amazingly well with adequate skill. Linda Cardellini portrays the brainy smart Velma we all know, but Linda plays her with a sensitive side which is new and a a nice choice. Sharah Michelle Gellar is the shining light here bringing warmth and believability to her character as Daphne, everyones favorite danger prone female who proves she is tougher than most think in one of the film's best scenes. Matthew Lillard plays Shaggy well and plays off of Scooby-Doo well even though there was nothing there during filming. Lillard's acting is a key success to the film. It doesn't matter how well the CGI Scooby is made Lillard really has to bring it to life by make believing that Scooby is actually there. The whole thing could have gone completely wrong, but luckily this escapes that. Now the question that most people are asking. How does Scooby-Doo stack up? Neil Fanning's has to be the best since the original and the CGI Scooby looks pretty convincing. The action is a big part of this film as it plays a huge part. There are plenty of action scenes to keep you interested. My favorite one probably has to be the castle scene, a ten minute romp where the gang uncovers clues and it all ends in a big bang, but there are many more to more than fulfill your attention. The screenplay keeps thing's nice and simple and so is the direction. Constant and flashy cuts would've gotten in the way here so the direction they took works the best. The film all ends with more action scenes, big bangs, and many great twists. This could've been a lot worse.

The Bad News: The could've taken out the crude humor, but that's my only complaint

Conclusion: See this at any cost if you are a hardcore Scooby-Doo fan and others will all so want to check this out. Recommend

3 out of 5 stars Fine Family Viewing.......2007-06-23

I am no fan of the cartoons so it doesn't bother me that the characters of Fred and Daphne have been changed to create some sort of dramatic tension. It works. The film is colourful and fun and the monsters are quite scary. I like it. It is a good harmless family movie, ideal for kids 7 - 14. There are some downsides - the plot makes no sense, Rowan Atkinson is on autopilot, and it does plod along at times, but it is pleasantly watchable. The second movie is much better by the way.

3 out of 5 stars Scooby-Doo, Where are You?.......2007-02-11

I have a confession to make. I didn't grow up watching cartoons. As a result, I've only seen a handful of episodes of this show in my entire life. Yet, I was curious about the live action version, so I finally sat down and watched it.

The Mystery Inc. Gang is in the middle of another exciting case. Yet when they've captured the ghost, something strange happens. A microphone is trust into Fred's face (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) and suddenly the gang starts fighting. Velma (Linda Cardellini) is tired of Fred taking all the credit. And Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is absolutely sick of always being the damsel in distress. Only Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby-Doo are interested in staying together. And so the gang breaks up.

Some time later, they are brought back together by Mandavarious (Rowan Atkinson). He owns Spooky Island, a hip college resort. Unfortunately, his guests are arriving as normal college students and leaving as zombies. Will the Mystery Inc. Gang be able to reconcile to solve the case?

The problem with taking a half hour program and making it a full length movie is the added time. The writers tried to deal with that my adding the conflict within the group. However, so little time is spent on it that it feels like an after thought. Instead, the movie spends most of its time focusing on the story, which makes sense for the most part. There's a twist at the end that I thought was just plain weird, but maybe that's just me. Matthew Lillard is the standout member of the cast. His Shaggy perfectly brought the cartoon character to life. And the computer animated Scooby, while looking like a cartoon was believable.

There are some parts that might frighten small children, but most will be ok with it. It's a mixed bag, at least for this non-fan of the series.

4 out of 5 stars Scooby Dooby Doo!.......2006-04-30

As a big fan of Scooby-Doo cartoons when I was a kid I was interested to find out how this live action film would turn out. It did help that Sarah Michelle-Gellar was in it too as Daphne! There seems to be a small trend of doing films of cult cartoon characters using cgi, Garfield for one. So I'd thought I'd watch it to see how it compares to the old cartoons.
In many ways it stays very faithful to the cartoons. The costumes of the characters are the same, although at one point Velma goes from orange roll-neck top to a skimpy low-neck top. Daphne as well wears revealing tops, seems they decided to spice it up a little, but no complaints! The Mystery machine van is identical as well, and generally the film has the same sense of humor as the cartoons. The only real difference is the decision to make Fred some sort of playboy airhead?!? Also the plot involves the group falling out at the start and going their separate ways, but at least it is a good change and makes the film have more of a plot. The acting is great especially Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Linda Cardellini as Velma as they get the voices from the cartoons spot on, so much so I thought it may be dubbed!!! There is Rowan Atkinson perfectly cast as a comedy eccentric and a cameo from Pamela Anderson, another one!!
Overall if you take the film in the right context, it is a comedy mainly aimed at kids it is good and mildly funny for the bigger kids among us and Scooby fans from years ago. If you want to relive part of your childhood but brought up to date for todays generation this is perfect for you and your kids! 7/10

Amazon.co.uk Review

An original, animated feature set in the frozen wilds of the Himalayas, Chill Out, Scooby Doo! finds best buddies Shaggy and Scooby-Doo on their way to join Freddie, Daphne, and Velma in Paris when they're waylaid by an ambitious hunter out to snare the abominable snowman. Figuring Shaggy and Scooby, as charter members of Mystery, Inc., can find their way to a monster, the hunter pursues the legendary Yeti from one angle while a research scientist and his assistant try to get to the creature from another. Terribly inscrutable about the snowman is the High Lama of Shangri-La, who has his own reasons for keeping a sacred shrine to the Yeti. Caught between these various agendas, of course, are Shaggy and Scooby, who are a long way from Freddie and the others right when they need them most. Yes, it's a typical Scooby adventure, with multiple chase scenes, supernatural phenomena that isn't quite what it seems, and plenty of Scooby snacks devoured by the ever-ravenous Shaggy and his canine best friend. Longtime fans of the various Scooby series and younger kids catching up on Mystery, Inc. culture will certainly appreciate the story. Casey Kasem, as ever, voices Shaggy, though one can hear him getting a little raspy with age. (I salute Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!'s producers for sticking with Kasem; these shows certainly wouldn't be the same without him.) --Tom Keogh

Scooby Doo And The Loch Ness Monster is excellent!
Scooby-doo and the gang head out to scotland to see daphne's cousin, Shanon (Or was it Sharon? I don't know...) but things get wierd when they keep seeing the loch-ness monster. It is good because the tension builds up then suddenly you will see it!

Yes, the accents are a bit...iffy. But they don't keep you from watching the film! There is actually a twist at the end and....actually, i will let you watch it!

I think it is quite ridiculas because, like all scooby-doo movies, it has people in the monster. But it is a huge loch ness monster so i don't see how little peddles can move it...but it dosn't have to make sence..I guess.

Overall, an excellent Scooby-Doo film and i would reccomend watching it! It has some bonus feutures, like scooby-doo bloopers (I like the scooby blooper).

Get this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Go Scooby!!!.......2005-06-27

Woohoo!!! Hanna Barbera has captured the fun and magic of Scooby Doo that we big kids fell in love with years ago. A good storyline with fun characters that will be enjoyed by young and old fans.

It is set in Scotland in a castle on Loch Ness. The Loch Ness Monster is threatening to ruin the Scottish Games Tournament and a full scale hunt starts to prove the existance of the legendary sea beast. Scooby and the gang have to solve the mystery and save both the games and the monster.

I was a bit worried about this one, living in Scotland I thought bad accents and terrible stereotypes would ruin this for me but actually it wasn't too bad. Yes, the accents are poor but acceptable considering they have to be understood by children everywhere.

Voice actors include regulars Frank Welker, Casey Kasem, Mindy Cohn and Grey Delisle.

    Scooby Doo: Pirates Ahoy

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Piracy on the high seas and the mysterious Bermuda Triangle loom on the horizon in Pirates Ahoy!, but solving mysteries is the last thing on the Scooby-Doo Gang's minds when Fred's parents invite the group on a luxury cruise to celebrate Fred's birthday. It turns out that the cruise is actually a mystery cruise, but the gang solves all the Program Director's mysteries so fast that it looks like their trip to the Bermuda Triangle will be an uneventful one full of rest, relaxation, and all-you-can-eat buffets. Enter the creepy Mr. Mysterio, astral photographer Rupert Garcia who swears his ship was attacked by ghost pirates, eccentric millionaire Biff Wellington, and an eerie green-glowing fog that envelopes everything in its path, and the gang is suddenly immersed in a mystery in which their own lives and the lives of Fred's parents are at stake. There's updated music and a shift of focus from Scooby's and Shaggy's obsession with food and Daphne's simpleminded behavior to Velma's deductive reasoning. The group's collaborative efforts combine with an abundance of chase scenes to create a 70-minute Scooby-Doo movie with broad appeal to children ages 5 and older. Voice talents include Frank Welker, Casey Kasem, Tim Conway, Arsenio Hall, and Ron Perlman. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Scooby - Doo Movies...vol 1.......2007-07-21

GHASTLY GHOST TOWN...(THE THREE STOOGES). The Scooby-Doo Detectives forced to seek help on foot in the desert after their van is forced onto a sand dune by a low flying kig sized bat. They come across Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly-Joe DeRita, whose amusement park is really the one in need of help.
THE DYNAMIC SCOOBY-DOO AFFAIR...(BATMAN AND ROBIN). The Scooby-Doo crime stoppers team up to help The Dynamic Duo locate their missing vehicle. The trail leads to an abandoned carnival and counterfeiting ring run by those master criminals, The Joker and The Penguin.
THE FRICKERT FRACAS...(JONATHAN WINTERS). Thinking they will have a vacation from haunted houses and spooky characters when Jonathan Winters invites them to stay at Maude Frickert's farm Scooby-Doo and company soon learn differently when the place becomes over run and inundated with vandalizing scoundrels and living scarecrows. The reason for this raucous ruckus is that they are after a secret growth formula devised by Maude Frickert.
GUESS WHO'S KNOTT COMING TO DINNER...(DON KNOTTS). When Scooby-Doo and friends enter Moody Manor to ask someone for directions, they're mistakenly for the relatives of the estate's late owner by Don Knotts, who as the world's greatest detective (or so he believes!), suspects that one of them has done away with late Captain Moody.

5 out of 5 stars FUN AND SUSPENSEFUL.......2007-08-18

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island is the best direct-to-video Scooby-Doo yet

Plot: After years of uncovering phony phantoms and ghosts the gang has split up. Fred (Frank Welker) and Daphne (Mary Kay Bergman) have their own television show documenting their past mysteries. Velma (B.J. Ward) owns her own mystery book shop and Shaggy (Billy West) and Scooby-Doo (Scott Ines) work at an airport. For Daphne's birthday they get back together to try to find real monsters for her T.V. show. Along the way they meet Lena (Tara Charendoff) who tells them about the haunted house she works at on Moonscar Island and invites them over. They except and once there they meet Simone (Adrienne Barbeau). As day leads into night the gang discovers the haunting's may be true.

The Good News: They say the first is the best and this one really proves that true. There is really a lot to like here and not a lot to dislike. This may surprise a lot of people, but this film is really suspenseful. The final half hour really represents this. It had me on the edge of my seat and is filled with lots of twists and turns. The animation also shines here, but I don't want to give anything away. The first ghost sighting is creepy and provides a few chills, actually all the ghost sightings prior to the climax are very unearthly and leave you with a set of chills. The idea of it suddenly becoming cold before the ghosts attack is an old one, but this proves it can still work. The addition of voodoo is thrown into the mix, but it just adds to the film instead of lowering it. The music also adds to the film and gives it a creepier edge. The all-star cast provides a ton of great voices and I have to mention that the great Adrienne Barbeau is in this. The addition of real monsters was nice and provided a lot of great opportunities. The film moves along a fast pace and it is never boring. It also has a high re watch ability factor.

The Bad News: There could have been a few more ghost attacks and the jokes could have been funnier.

Conclusion: If you're a Scooby fan you'll eat this up and it provides more entertainment than a regular Scooby-Doo episode so others will also find a lot to like here too. Recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Scooby Doo Returns.......2006-06-06

This DVD marked the return of Scooby Doo and launched and whole new set of Scooby Doo feature length adventures for a new generation of fans and then What's New Scooby Doo on TV.
This time they have new music and a new storyline and this time the monsters and ghosts etc. are really real no maskes, no fakes, no robots etc.
Velma, Daphne, Freddie, Shaggy and not forgetting Scooby take on the case of Zombie Island and they discover more than even Velma suspected.
Freddie and Daphne's dress sense has changed but Shaggy and Velma and Scooby haven't changed this DVD should enjoy all true fans and this DVD gives two classic episodes so a great buy.
