"Passion is NOT a dirty word!".......2006-04-06
Larry (Kirk Douglas) meets Maggie (Kim Novak) and sparks start flying as soon as their eyes meet (during the opening credits!). They both have spouses, but are bored and, of course, unappreciated at home. Soon they're lying to their mates and meeting regularly for romantic trysts. Eventually, the truth comes out and Larry must choose between Maggie and his family.
The romantic drama is set in an affluent suburb in 1960, with beautiful clothes, bright orange furniture, and copper-colored kitchen appliances, and all the guilt and pain that come with infidelity. Douglas' Larry is sensitive and undeniably sexy; I really enjoyed his performance. Novak's sultry-voice and sleepwalker-style are overdone, but she's still believable as the housewife who wants to be good, but always ends up in trouble because she's just so gosh-darned pretty. Barbara Rush is lovely and charming as Larry's long-suffering wife. Walter Matthau plays a mild-mannered neighbor who turns out to be a rat.
There's a lush, romantic musical score and beautiful photography, and the seasoned actors make it seem real. "Strangers" ranks as a satisfying soaper and memorable chick flick.

Beseiged.......2005-10-06
A slow, thoughtful, moving film. With David Thewlis very much on form. Leaves you with an awareness of the generosity of the human spirit.
An absolute gem of a movie - in my personal top ten........2004-09-29
When you watch a movie like this it reminds you that filmmaking (in its purest form) is a true art, rather than just a money-making blockbuster enterprise. This is a completely beautiful film, handcrafted in as loving a fashion as any painting or sculpture. Thought has gone into every step of its production; Bernardo Bertolucci & Clare Peploe proving to be the creative force behind a film experience that they, and the wonderfully-amalgemed Thandie Newton/David Thewlis can be forever proud.
Set against the timeless backdrop of the eternal city, this is a modern day parable of the true meaning of love - if necessary all sacrificing, and far more than a means to an end; an end in itself. Simply wonderful.
An excellent film, heartwrenching........2000-12-16
This film really keeps your attention. It shows the true meaning of love - it gives without asking anything in return. Your heart goes out to Kinsky (Thewlis), as he is willing to part with his dearest posession to help the woman he loves (Newton) re-unite with her husband. The ending leaves you wondering, though!

Best edutainment for kids starting their Spanish studies.......2006-03-09
An absolute success! My second kid is using the 3-cassette set and my third one (6-yr old) is already watching. An ideal follow-up is José-Luis Orozco's "Diez Deditos and Other Play Rhymes and Action Songs from Latin America". Unbeatable pair.
Great.......2005-12-08
My kids love this and ask for it all the time... they are aged 3 and 5 with a little spanish knowledge... enjoyment has lasted four months so far, and still have volume 3 to try out.
