Charro-One of Elvis` Finest Films.......2007-06-09

Charro, Elvis Presley`s 29th feature film gave Elvis a rare late opportunity in 1968 to demonstrate his acting potential and he clearly rose to the challenge.
A strong supporting cast and a reasonable story line. This is the only film to feature Elvis with a beard. Capturing the spaghetti western genre popular at the time the soundtrack was scored by Hugo Montenegro and the theme song was composed by MacDavis and Strange who wrote a string of strong film songs for Elvis in the late 60s.
Thankfully Let`s Forget About The Stars was cut from the film. Although a passable song this film would have suffered from the insertion of any songs.
Back in 1969 when the film was released Elvis` new image shocked and surprised fans and critics alike-`A new kind of man, a new kind of role!` as the hype went. The film captures the emerging new Elvis as showcased in the 1968 NBC TV Special and his return to live performing in Las Vegas in 1969. For this reason alone the film does have an historical significance.
What a pity that nobody valued it enough to remaster it prior to its release on DVD. The audio and video quality is the poorest I have ever seen and spoiled my viewing pleasure. For this reason I award the product only 3 stars.

I have wanted this particular dvd for a very long time.

Elvis is as gorgeous as ever( even with a beard) as he plays the role of a cowboy. No singing, just as he wanted his films to be. Serious acting.
I actually bought this dvd about two years ago but was disappointed to say the least with the quality of the film. I returned it but recently purchased it again from another source. SAME QUALITY. It seems that you either have the film and put up with it or don't see it at all. It looks like a movie made in 1912, with lines running down the screen throughout the whole picture.I'm sure a film made in 1969 should be of a good quality, but not this one. Be prepared to be disappointed-not with the film contents but with the quality of picture.

Devout Presley fans will no doubt already know this - the film was considered one of his best - at last a chance to act. The music also is fantastic and not lost here. It is a shame then that the quality of the film makes it almost unwatchable - the worst DVD (quality wise) I have ever seen!

DVD is supposed to be about quality but..........2005-02-01

Forget the film, which is easy. An average cowboy yarn with Elvis sporting a beard. Certainly nothing out of the ordinary and not a patch on "Flaming Star". However, the quality is abysmal with drained colour and clear 3 into 1 screen connection lines across the picture for most of the film. It must have been patched together with chord. It is like viewing in a cinema that did not charge much. Why could the print not be restored? A waste of money - wait for a remastered version.

The King With A Beard and Playing it Straight.......2003-12-08

If you like something different then this is for you. An Elvis movie but not as you know them. In true 'Spaghetti Western' fashion we have Presley chomping a cigar and sporting a beard. From the opening scene where Elvis totally commands the screen as reformed outlaw Jess Wade he carries the film on his back.In spite of the low production values and predictable script but with good support from Victor French (Hghway to Heaven) and the lovely Ina Balin it is nevertheless an thoroughly enjoyble yarn. Only the one song in the movie and that is over the opening credits but a good if unusual song arranged by Hugo Montenegro of the Eastwood Spaghettis. Other oddities too look for (bearing in mind this is a Presley movie) is a bare breast exposed by Ina Balin and the blowing off of an arm near the end of the movie. Well worth a look even if you are not a Presley fan
