Amazon.co.uk Review

Adapted from the popular Nickelodeon show, Hey Arnold! continues the adventures of the blithely cheerful, football-headed Arnold (voice by Spencer Klein) on the big screen.

When corrupt developer Schek (Paul Sorvino) threatens to buy the run-down urban neighbourhood where Arnold lives, he and his best friend Gerald (Jamil Smith) rally the neighbours to keep their homes from being turned into a mega-mall. After their peaceful efforts fail, they turn to espionage in a spoof of Men in Black and other action films. Hey Arnold! suffers from the same difficulty as many theatrical features spawned from TV cartoons: the characters have to solve a problem that's too big. The James Bond-style gadgetry and car chases don't fit into the slightly skewed vision of fourth-grade life that made the series popular. The limited animation and awkward designs will work better in the video release. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable movie for fans of the series........2008-02-27

Hey Arnold is a personal favourite cartoon series of mine, with the release of the movie I was in a frenzy state yet I never watched the movie until I reached the age of 20! Having said that, has the growing up affected the charm or my opinion on this great cartoon series?

No.

Hey Arnold is still as an enjoyable as it was when it was first released over a decade ago. It never quite reached the popularity ranks as Rugrats or Spongebob, yet I believe the cartoon is cleverly written and the stories are far more engaging. The same can be said for the movie. It's basically a long episode of the show in the same vein as The Simpsons Movie. It's nothing against the film itself, but you get the feeling it could have been a straight to TV/DVD release, rather than a theatrical one. But merely saying that is like saying the film is bad. Not true. The film is a great enjoyable yarn that will, I think, entertain adults and children alike. It has jokes for children and jokes for adults. The voice acting is excellent, Christopher Lloyd as the loopy mortician in particular is worthy of a mention.

I really enjoyed this movie and so should you. It encompasses the feel of the show, and you can't ask for more than that.

As a massive Hey Arnold! fan, I was delighted to recieve this through the post when I bought it off Amazon her back in 2003. The story is simple: a developer, Scheck, wants to flatten the antiquated neighbourhood Arnold and his friends live in, so Arnold, along with best friend Gerald and, unbeknwown to him initially, the scowling but amiable Helga, who secretly adores him, they find an historic document that saves the neighbourhood as a national landmark. If you're a fan of the show like I am this is a must have, if not, well, watch it and have a good laugh anyway!

I have to say I have really enjoyed this film, although some of the characters are americians with dodgy Irish Accents it is an great watch. For me living my childhood in Ireland I relate to this film in many ways. It is all based around a nutty family living in howth with the eldest lad waiting for the results of your leaving cert and whether he will be going to college or not. PLus girls became alot more interesting then with all that free time on your hands.

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Fan-rrific! Hanna-Barbera's Hong Kong Phooey was the Saturday-morning cartoon answer to the mid-'70s martial-arts craze. Mild-mannered janitor Penry (voiced by Scatman Crothers) works in the police station alongside switchboard operator Rosemary (voiced by Kathy Gori) and beleaguered Sergeant Flint (Joe E. Ross), humans who never suspect that the diligent dog is actually "America's secret weapon against crime". Never mind that Hong Kong Phooey, although armed with his trusty book of kung fu and a Bond-meets-Wacky Races Phooeymobile, wouldn't even be able to get out of his quick-change file cabinet without a well-placed blow from his loyal cat, Spot (who's striped, naturally). The public is awed by him, Rosemary has a crush on him, and villains--including the Claw, the Giggler, Goldfisher, and the Gum Drop Kid--fear him, but no one notices that Hong Kong Phooey only succeeds through his own klutziness, Spot's help, or dumb luck. Classic stuff. And remember the catchy theme song? "Hong Kong Phooey, Number one super guy / Hong Kong Phooey, Quicker than the human eye". --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars HI-YAH!.......2007-08-09

I'm not a huge fan of Hanna-barbera but this is just classic stuff. Penry the quiet canine janitor at a police station listens out for distress calls to Rosemary the telephonist, before you knew it he was transformed into the mighty dog-wonder Hong kong phooey. Dressed up in kung-fu regalia he and his striped cat spot would drive around in the phooey mobile solving crime. The phooey mobile would change into whatever was needed with a bang on the magic gong. The beauty of it all was of course that phooey was a blithering idiot in the style of Clouseau who was always rescued by spot the cat. Spot never got any recognition for his work and each episode would end with phooey back as Penry the janitor being shouted at for some blunder by the 'sarge while he daydreamed of his crimefighting skills, all watched on by a headshaking, sighing spot.
The real skill here was getting Scatman Crothers to do the gravel voiced phooey. what could have been just another churned out cartoon became inspired by his ability to find dignity and humour in his character.
I just love this show and it's release on DVD is long overdue.
