All depth and no surface.......2006-10-26
This is a great film, but it requires more patients than a bankrupt proctologist. The difficulty in watching this film is that the symbols are not the servants to the meaning, but the masters, and few people like watching a film that is "unrealistic" because form revolts over matter. It feels at times like T.S. Eliot has taken Emily Dickinson by the hand and is giving her a guided tour of the Waste Land.
I admire this film greatly but I will never like it.
This is a film for cultivated people.......2004-12-02
Do not watch this or any other Pasolini's film unless you are able to understand that film is not just entertainment and you think you're capable of reading between the lines.
This film deals with very impostant topics such as the mentality of the bourgeoisie in those years, sexuality and its taboos and spirituality.
Pasolini's style is unmistakeable and unique: only a superficial viewer would call it pretentious.
buy this film and enjoy it
So Disappointing..........2002-02-24
Even if you start with the best intentions, this film will inevitably be a pain to watch. It is an immensely ambitious -or pretentious- project which falls flat on several accounts.
Firstly, the dialogue: it is so sparse that the whole of the film's script (2hours) can fit in a A4 piece of paper. It is also immensely pretentious and irrealistic: the chatacters either speak in monosyllables or start huge rants on the meaning of life. Secondly, the acting is awful -really wooden and expressionless- notwithstanding the presence of famous actors like Terence Stamp (who does pretty much nothing apart from looking pretty) and Silvana Mangano.
Thirdly, it goes without saying that for much of the film NOTHING happens: a highlight of the action is one of the characters sitting in a farm courtyard for the last half hour of the film -fixed gaze, saying nothing.
I love Pasolini and what he stood for - but I am still unable to suspend my critical faculties to the point of claiming that this is an enjoyable film.
for pasolini fans only........2001-04-01
This is not an easy film to talk about. it's pretentious and absurd in places, brilliantly surreal the rest of the time. but if you like Pasolini's films then you will enjoy this. It features one of Terence Stamp's best performance.
