Amazon.co.uk Review

If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasises her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Good unchallenging entertainment.......2008-02-15

If you fancy an unchallenging relaxing night in, then you could do a lot worse than watch 'While You Were Sleeping'.
A touch corny and wearing the ubiquitous American rose tinted specs, this film does not take life or itself too seriously. It has a simple rather innocent atmosphere, with the sole exception of a glimpsed mugging that initiates the whole story.
If that's how you like your films then this certainly is one for you and you might give it five stars.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful, heartwarming.......2008-01-12

I have seen this film quite a few times. it always tickles me and makes me smile. it's the type of film that leaves you with a warm glow. the gran is so funny. the things she says cracks me up.
that bit with the paperboy makes me laugh too. just deserts i'd say.
I LOVE the, 'LEANING' scene. everytime I see it I always say, 'oh go on, just kiss her.'
Watch it and be prepared to go, AAH!!!!!!
love it, love it, love it.
oh by the way have I said that I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant chick flick.......2007-06-26

While You Were Sleeping is a brilliant romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock ideally cast in the lead role. Definately worth a watch.

3 out of 5 stars Delightful and silly.......2007-03-24

This is a delightful and silly romantic comedy; lightweight and sugary, just the way I like a romantic comedy to be. Sandra Bullock is funny and endearing as lonely Lucy and Bill Pullman is just so handsome and sweet. The supporting cast are very good too. Special mention has to go to 'Joe Junior' who is the funniest character in the film. The plot devices are very far-fetched but that's not a bad thing: this film is a lovely piece of escapism. The reason I have not given the film more stars is that I think this film would have been better if the relationship between the two lovers had been developed a little more. I know that this film is pure fantasy but another couple of scene between these two characters would have made their love that little bit more believable...or maybe I'm just becoming cynical in my old age.

A wee gem of a film that I would watch over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars one you can watch over & over.......2007-02-17

I saw this film in the cinema back in 1995 and quickly established itself as a family favourite.
This film does not disappoint and still brings a smile to my face even after more than ten years.

4 out of 5 stars The making of a legend........2007-12-29

Sayles is a legend in the indie movie business. He writes his own excellent movies, he directs his own movies, he acts in his own movies, he funds his movies by writing screenplays for more commercial movies such as Alligator and Battle Beyond The Stars. He also writes excellent novels. Plus, in his prime, he was tall dark and handsome. Presumably he's now tall, grey/bald and distinguished. What a bastard.

The three movies in this collection are his first three and are each very different from the other. We have a post-hippy ensemble piece, a married woman discovering that she's a lesbian, and a sf satire. Five stars, easy.

Sadly there are no extras. No director's commentary -which would have been fascinating given Sayles' intelligence and radical (by American standards) political viewpoint. Nothing about Sayles himself. No subtitles. Plus the prints aren't all that wonderful and should have been sharpened up. So one star for the presentation. But don't let that put you off buying this set which is intelligent indie film-making at its best.

But hell, it could have been so much better.

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Simple Men opens with small-time hood Bill (Robert Burke from RoboCop 3) asking a bound and blindfolded security guard if he can have the guard's Virgin Mary medallion; "Be good to her and she'll be good to you", says the guard. Immediately after, Bill is double-crossed by his girlfriend and his partner. From there, the plot goes off in a completely different direction: Bill and his younger brother Dennis (William Sage, High Art), a philosophy student, go off in search of their father, a former star shortstop who may have committed a bombing many years ago. Their only clue is a phone number on Long Island; they end up at a cafe run by Kate (Karen Sillas, Female Perversions), which is also the hang-out for Elina Loewensohn (Nadja) and Martin Donovan (Hollow Reed, The Opposite of Sex). Plot is never the point in Hal Hartley movies (Trust, Amateur, Henry Fool); it's just a clothesline on which to hang odd, quirky scenes--moments like Donovan and Sage trying to imitate Loewensohn's dance movements to a Sonic Youth song or a half-drunken conversation about pop music and self-exploitation. Hartley's deliberately stilted dialogue and stylised performances actually play better on video; the movie feels more intimate, making the humour more relaxed and fluid. Hartley is the kind of idiosyncratic filmmaker who provokes love-him-or-hate-him responses, but there's a deep sincerity to his artifices that goes beyond mere posing. Against all commercial wisdom, he's struggling to find his own cinematic poetry. Such an uncommon aspiration is worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent early Hartley's film.......2003-09-19

My second best Hartley's film. A bit more professional in the making than the Unbelievable Truth, though maybe it lacks the immense freshness of the Hartley's very first film. Hence the 4 stars, not 5.
Anyway, really worth it, nothing to do with his pseudo-sophisticated and boring later films like Amateur.
When does it come out on DVD? (Hint!)

    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2000-03-15

Concerning the adventures of two brothers in search of their renegade, anarchist terrorist, all-star shortstop dad in Long Island. ("It's not an Island, it's a terminal murain... the land left over when ice recedes," one casually observes.) Features an odd, if entrirely characteristic, dance sequence to Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" and Martin Donovan's ode to Hot f**cking Tuna. Entirely essential for fans of the director; others may be baffled.

5 out of 5 stars Lee & Cushing at their best........2008-02-24

If you enjoy the old school of gothic & macabre: films directed by Freddie Francis; this is a must for you!
It is also I reckon the singularly best collaboration of Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing; and ranks amongst their finest performances.

A scientist played by Cushing, brings back a primeval skeleton from an expedition in New Guinea; which he believes to be the missing link. He discovers it to be considerably more than an old fossil. Lee plays the owner of a psychiatric hospital, where the inmates are not well cared for!

While I don't consider the film scary ( nothing like the really nasty stuff available nowadays ); I still find it exciting; even having watched it many times on my old VHS tape; On DVD the print of this 1972 film is 90% better than my old videotape.

Whatever it's flaws, for me, it is more than compensated for by an intense atmosphere; and absorbing camera work; This has a really different feel to Hammer, or Amicus films (I've also seen and love) , worked on by Lee, Cushing, & directed by Francis; being made around the same time. If you've seen and enjoyed other films made by the people involved in this one; then don't miss it!

      5 out of 5 stars Great movie.........2007-12-30

I remember watching this movie on late night TV as a kid, it has to be one of my favourite British horror movies. Everything about it is so unique, love the huge slimy undead skeletoid evil creature lurking about througout the later part of the film, after the thunderstorm. Been looking for a Region 2 DVD realease without success.

4 out of 5 stars Makes Your Flesh Creep!.......2005-07-11

Once again the two legends of the Hammer Horror, and Amicus movies, are brought together in this wonderful film, 'The Creeping Flesh', an interesting combination of sci-fi and horror. It works on the theory that evil is a contagious diease just like cholera or diptheria, and therefore can be cured or vaccinated against. If only this were true in real life.

Peter Cushing stars as Emmanuel Hilden, a scientist who thinks he has found the key to unlock the mysteries of evolution. This 'key' is an ancient skeleton that he found in some rock, which although looks human, is far bigger in every way. While washing the skeleton with water to clean it up, Hildren notices that on one of the fingers, skin and flesh have started to grow. Through tests, he reveals that this skeleton is basically pure evil, and also manages to make an inoculation against it.

Who better to test his new serum on than his daughter who he worries might develop some kind of mental disorder just like her mother. However, the serum has the opposite effect, making her go on a mad rampage, where she slits a guys throat with a broken bottle, and pushes another off a building. After being captured by the police, she is taken to the local asylum run by Hilden's half brother James, who recognises her immediately and brings her back home to try and blackmail Hilden into letting him in on his work.

Hilden refuses to be blackmailed however, and so James returns that same night to steal the skeleton. On the way home with it, James is caught in a thunderstorm that drenches the skeleton, and starts it producing flesh and skin, and basically brings it to life.

With Peter Cushing playing the role of Emmanuel Hilden the scientist studying human evolution, and Christopher Lee playing the role of James Hilden, his jealous half brother, this film really is a winner. Although Cushing is credited below Lee, he has a much more involved role in the film and should have been above really. Lorna Heilbron also does a good job in her role as Penelope Hildern, Emmanuel's daughter who he turns insane with his supposed cure for evil.

Overall, 'The Creeping Flesh' really is a good movie, starring the two legends of the Hammer Horror movies that were so poular during the 1970's. If you are a fan of either of them, Hammer Horror films, or just horror films in general, then this is the film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Charm and romance don't date.......2006-02-03

This is one of those movies that was one of my favourites back when the Beeb used to screen loads of old films as part of their Saturday cinema. This is one of David Niven's most charming films. If you love a good slushy romance then look out for this one. David Niven and Teresa Wright (she goes on to play the older Elise McKenna is Somewhere in Time) are Lark and Rollo who missed out on their chance for happiness due to Rollo's spiteful sister. Young lark is adopted into the Dane family when her parents are killed in an accident and is raised with the Dane children as their father's ward. She earns the emnity of Selina Dane, by merely breathing. As Lark grows up, both Pelham the older son and Rollo the younger son fall in love with her. Jealous Selena uses lies to separate Lark and Rollo. Despite their separation, Rollo never forgets Lark and vows to never enter the family home while Selina is alive, in retribution. Years later, during WWII Lark's 'nephew' and Rollo's grandneice have the chance to put love before practicality.

This is the kind of movie that needs the accompaniment of chocolates and a roaring fire. Curl up and lose yourself in it.

      3 out of 5 stars Nostalgic charm.......2003-05-23

Based on a Rumer Godden Novel (A Fugue in Time UK, A Breath of Fresh Air US), this charming story combines the talents of a delightful Teresa Wright and a sophisticated, war-weary David Niven in a flash-back drama of innocent love. The screenplay could be better, but the fey quality of the romantic element suited the period and, though dated, cannot fail to stir the heartstrings.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous performance by Wesley Snipes.......2007-05-02

This is an excellent movie with a tremendous performance by Wesley Snipes. He is a much better actor than he gets credit for, with terrific range.

A story of a street drug dealer trying to break free of the life he has led. Unfortunately, circumstances and people conspire to threaten his dreams. A very interesting, thoughtful movie, with a great performance by Snipes and Clarence Williams.
