    Amazon.co.uk Review

Arguably the finest movie of its kind, Terminator 2: Judgment Day captured Arnold Schwarzenegger at the very apex of his Hollywood celebrity and James Cameron at the peak of his perfectionist directorial powers. Nothing the star did subsequently measured up to his iconic performance here, spouting legendary catchphrases and wielding weaponry with unparalleled cool; and while the director had an even bigger hit with the bloated and sentimental Titanic, few followers of his career would deny that Cameron's true forte has always been sci-fi action. With an incomparably bigger budget than its 1984 precursor, T2 essentially reworks the original scenario with envelope-stretching special effects and simply more, more, more of everything. Yet, for all its scale, T2 remains at heart a classic sci-fi tale: robots running amok, time travel paradoxes and dystopian future worlds are recurrent genre themes, which are here simply revitalised by Cameron's glorious celebration of the mechanistic. From the V-twin roar of a Harley Fat Boy to the metal-crunching Steel Mill finale, the director's fascination with machines is this movie's strongest motif: it's no coincidence that the character with whom the audience identifies most strongly is a robot. Now that impressive but unengaging CGI effects have come to over-dominate sci-fi movies (think of The Phantom Menace), T2's pivotal blending of extraordinary live-action stuntwork and FX looks more and more like it will never be equalled.

On the DVD: Oh, if only every DVD could be like this. Here is a DVD package worthy of this monumental movie, with so many extra features the viewer will spend hours simply trying to find them all (the animated menus alone are worth watching over and over again.) On the second disc there are three extensive documentaries (all good, all relatively straightforward), but things get more complicated as you burrow down through the menu layers of Cyberdyne Systems into the "Data Hub": the entire screenplay, storyboards, text features, dozens and dozens of video clips, deleted scenes, and thousands of stills.

The movie disc itself will cause even hardened surround-sound enthusiasts to gasp with joy as these explosive soundscapes come alive in Dolby 5.1 or DTS (hear that Harley roar!), while the anamorphic widescreen picture of the original theatrical 2.35:1 ratio is jaw-droppingly impressive. The exhaustive commentary is a patchwork of interviews with various key cast and crew members. The only disappointment here is that, unlike the almost identical Region 1 version, this Region 2 package does not include the DVD-ROM features nor the option to play the original theatrical release and the hidden "Ultimate Edition"--the only version here is the Director's Cut Special Edition, although the few extra scenes that make up the "Ultimate" edit can still be found in the "Data Core" section of the second disc. --Mark Walker

    5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment........2008-02-12

This movie very nearly has it all, mesmerizing effects which even today look better than most blockbusters, compelling story with tremendous characters and action that while allowing a story to develop drives the movie on.The story picks up some ten years after the events of film 1, John Connor is now a ten year old boy, his mother is out of the picture in a mental hospital, and a second far more sophisticated Terminator the "T1000" has been sent back in time to assassinate John. However another Terminator (the same design as the villain in Terminator1) has been sent back to protect John. The story is up and running(quite literally) from the very start with the best opening credits this viewer has ever seen, we are also given an all to brief glimpse of the extraordinary post-apocalyptic future where man and machine wage war against one another. But this movie is packed with some unbelievably well done action scenes, the chase scene early on,the mesmerizing mental hospital sequence and the final half hour-45 minutes are in a word explosive. But the action is so well choreographed and is weaved around the story so brilliantly it never gets brainless or repetitive.Made with a budget around 16-17 times that of its predecessor Terminator 2 manages to include MOST of the elements i loved in film one while maintaining a story in itself, along with some tremendous visuals.

One of the great things i really like with James Cameron movies is no matter how grand or spectacular the subject he always maintains great realism, whether whats happening is possible or not, isn't questioned, every detail is done with such painstaking care and effort that you really believe what is happening on screen. Everything in this film from the minor characters like Dr. Silberman (who even manages to add a little something),to the more sophisticated seemingly indestructible new killing machine all combine flawlessly and while the effects are jaw drooping and the stakes astronomically high the human element of the film is never forgotten with a strong performance from Hamilton and an impressive debut from Eddie Furlong this film has a great story with enough flair to satisfy the biggest effect/sci fi fan, but a story grand enough and intriguing that should satisfy the most serious film buff.

4 out of 5 stars The T2 you must see.......2007-10-04

Linda Hamilton returns as Sarah Connor, now a single mother to rebellious teen John Connor. Having been informed by a time-traveling soldier in the first film that John will one day grow up to become humanity's savior from a computer-controlled Armageddon, Sarah has responded by becoming a muscle-bound she-warrior bent on educating John in survival tactics and battle strategies. Her ranting about mankind's future has landed Sarah in an insane asylum and John in the foster care system. The rebellious John has responded to his situation by getting into scrapes with the law. When a new and improved Terminator android called the T-1000 arrives from the future to eliminate John, an older model T-800 played by Schwarzenegger who is sent to protect the boy. The T-1000, however, has the ability to morph itself into any shape it desires, allowing it chameleon-like powers and near indestructibility. The T-800 saves John's life and helps breaks Sarah out of the institution. Staying only one step ahead of the dogged T-1000, Sarah leads her son and the T-800 to the headquarters of Cyberdyne Systems, the company that will invent a robotic intelligence that will eventually take over the world. There, they attempt to convince inventor Miles Dyson to help them stop the future from ever occurring by destroying his work. Dyson sacrifices himself in an explosion to save the world, leading to a final showdown between the two.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest sequels ever.......2007-08-07

There are good sequels and bad sequels, in my opinion this is definitely in the minority group of good sequels. I can remember when this was released in 1991 and after loving the original, I was almost excited to the point of, I will say no more on that. This definitely lived up my expectations, in fact and amazingly it was actually better that I already thought it would be. Considering all the hype that it was getting, that to me made it even more impressive.

I have already said I love the original and so I have every right to say that I disagree with fand of the original that said this loses the atmosphere in favour of over the top action. In my opinion this keeps the atmosphere of the original and adds more action but I have to say I was a little disappointed with TERMINATOR 3, although the special effects were good, I just thought it lacked something overall that this and the original had, it's still good but just not in the same league as it's predecessors, which was a shame because I am a big fan of one of the directors other films called BREAKDOWN starring Kurt Russell. It wasn't just that though, I wasn't impressed with the choice of Nick Stahl as John Connor and Claire Danes as his future wife, they just seemed to lack the charisma that is needed in a movie as big as TERMINATOR 3.

Like I said, personally I think Terminator 2 kept the atmosphere of the original and added more action and the special effects in this are still some of my favourite ever. Robert Patrick gave a legendary performance as the T-1000 and I particularly never get bored of watching those liquid metal special effects, timeless. Arnie is as good as always, he never was a great actor but he never needed to be because is presence as an action hero and his timeless one liners were all that was ever needed and I have to say sadly, that the movie business really does lack an Arnie these days. This also featured a memorable performance by Linda Hamilton as the physically and mentally tough mum of John Connor, what a change that was from the same person as the original and definitely an example of same person, different personality.

Even after all these years, I still can't decide which I prefer, this or the original but one thing I can say for certain, they are both absolutely unmissable. ASTA LA VISTA, BABY.
