While watching this it dawned on me what we missed out on when young Sal Mineo, far, far too soon, had to make to with effeminate cameos. Here, at the tender age of 20, he carried this biopic on his shoulders. Not alone does he manage a marvelous stab at the enigmatic, troubled persona of legendary drummer Gene Krupa, he even excelled, and lastingly so with the dexterity of a superstar athlete, in his handling of the drums, only visually of course, as the film uses Krupa's own recordings.

The movie tells its story, historically acurate or not, about Krupa's meteoric rise to fame, his insistence that the drummer is a soloist in his own right, his infidelities, his drug abuse, his arrest, and his spectacular comeback in 1944. The movie itself is hardly a masterpiece, but Mineo is worth the price of admission, and so are Charles Lawton Jr's gorgeous black & white cinematography.
