Transformers - Original Series - Vol. 1 [1984]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers--Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots").

Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures.

In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings--excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero). For the ever-growing legions of Transformers fans out there, as well as any 80s' nostalgia buffs, Transformers--Original Series, Volume One is required viewing.--Robert Burrow

2 out of 5 stars Poorly Designed DVD's for an otherwise excellent series.......2007-01-06

When I first brought the three Original Series DVD's I thought I was getting the complete series in Sequance.

Sadly it turns out to be just the reverse, Volume 1 should have had "More then Meets the Eye" parts 1 to 3 on it to start the series off, but instead we end up having to watch volume 2 in order watch from the very beginning which has the first 6 episodes from the original series in their correct order, why it was placed as Volume 2 I can't Understand.

Of the 5 Episodes on the other 2 Volumes, Volume 2 should have been episode #1 "SOS Dinobots", which ends up on Volume 3, episodes #2 to 4 should have been "The Ulitmate Doom" part 1 to 3 which are here on Volume One instead and episode #5 should have been "War Of The Dinobots" which is also here on Volume 1 but placed before "The Ulitmate Doom" when it should have been after!

Volume 3's first episode should have been "Countdown to Extinction" which is instead the third episode on Volume 3, the second episode which is placed first on Volume 3 instead is "Fire in the Sky", the third episode should have been "Heavy Metal War", instead it's place last on the 3rd Volume, "Fire on the Mountain" should have been Fourth is instead is on Volume 1 as the first episode, after that the fith and last episode of the first Original series should have been "A Plague of Insecticons", instead it's the next to last as the 4th episode on Volume 3.

Maverick who designed and produced these DVD's did a very poor job, while the menu setup is ok, having the wrong episodes on each volume and in the wrong order is a huge negative, add to the fact that there is NO extras just makes these DVD's a miss at all costs set, I'd rather buy the Silver Grey Season One box set.

The only reason I can give it one star is because it was a brillant animated series, if it had been any other series, I wouldn't have even given it a single star for such a poorly excuted DVD Release.

4 out of 5 stars Transformers - 80s nostalgia at its best.......2002-10-29

This video contains five episodes of the classic children's T.V. show, three of which are a trilogy continuation.
Firstly, I've got to say that I was a little dissappointed that the first episode on the video is not actually the first ever transformers episode, so anyone not entirely familiar with the series would be unaware of how the transformers came to Earth from Cybertron, etc. A very small niggle, but a niggle nontheless. Furthermore, the chosen 'first episode' seems a little ropey. It feels as if it was chosen at random at best, or out of the 'medoicre episodes bin' at worst, and isn't really a good introduction to this otherwise excellent compilation.

However, ignoring this, it really is excellent. The 'Ultimate Doom' trilogy puts modern kids t.v. to shame, with frankly astounding detail put in to the backgrounds (Cybertron is particularly impressive, more so when considering this was done in the days were computer animation was practically non-existent,) and convincing voice-over acting, especially on Prime's part. In conclusion, a superb set of episodes, exluding the 'first' one. If you were around for the Transformers the first time, buy this for a highly enjoyable slice of nostalgia, and if you weren't buy it anyway, as you're probably young enough to appreciate it for what it is - a children's cartoon show. I promise you, it'll put your Power Rangers and Pokemons' to shame. Plus, Optimus Prime kicks arse.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed.......2002-02-07

I'd expect a chronological sequence of the classic episodes of the Transformers. Having War of the Dinobot and the Ultimate Doom in this release doesn't make sense. You just can't simply ignore 'More than Meets the Eye'! Also, only five episodes in a DVD? I'd expect at least seven.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2002-01-31

Compaired to the US dvds the sound doesn't match up, since these are only in 2 channel rather than surround. The episodes are in the right order, which is nice (episodes 6-10) and are not Generation 2. One problem though to fill out the rest of the first (16) episodes they would have Vol 2: 1,2&3(not 5) More than Meets the Eye, 4 Transport to Oblivion, 5 Roll for It. Vol 3: 1 Divide and Conquer, 2 Fire in the Sky 3 S.O.S. Dinobots, 4(missing out the eps on this dvd)Countdown to Extinction, 5 A Plague of Insecticons(maybe adding Heavy Metal wars to round it off). this would mean having to swop around dvds to see them in the right order, not good. The menu system is pleasing and not as clunky as the TFTM one. All in all it's a pretty nice dvd. Now I have something to say about the g2 dvd but that's for another place.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD is worth having.......2002-01-14

This is a great DVD containing some of the first ever episodes which were previously unavailable in the UK. In case you didn't know they are:
War of the Dinobots
The Ultimate Doom (feature length of 3 episodes)
Fire on the mountain
They also include a character called Skyfire (Jetfire) who had a very limited number of episodes, which is good to finally see available.

    5 out of 5 stars Morning Dexter!.......2006-01-16

From the sane people that brought you "The Fast Lady", here is another British comedy classic!
Stanley Baxter is great of course, but the real star here is the magnificent James Robertson Justice. The man lights up the screen with his booming presence and yes, he does bellow "Nincompoop!" at some poor individual in this film too!

Classic moment is his hefty slap on the backside as a morning alarm call for poor old Stanley Baxter (Dexter).

Sadly no extras, but good sound and picture and the original trailer. Fans of decent British comedy, the type they no longer make, will love this gem. Also features a young Ronnie Barker.
