Truly moving...............2008-02-24
This film is beautiful. It is emotional. It is touching. John Thaw is just so amazing, from his beautifully crafted rural accent, to his scowl that would have struck the fear of God into a small boy like William. Quite possibly Thaw's performance is his best ever, a world away from his other roles. In every respect this film rips the heartstrings through every nuance of emotion from sadness and fear, to joy and love. The simple life depicted is a wonderful backdrop to a story that is perhaps the stuff of life itself. I recently watched this with a man who was an evacuee, and he said it was just so true to life. Londoners were not well thought of in rural England at that time, and not held in much respect until the country knew what happened in the blitz. The period touches are again so right, and not overplayed at all. Notice for instance the dog's lead is a bit of rope, totally right and of period.Buy this DVD and enjoy this brilliant movie time and again, but dont forget the tissues!
Sheer brilliance in every respect.......2008-01-07
Plot, dialogue, period reproduction, acting are all brilliant. John Thaw plays his role superbly and the brilliance of the film is no doubt in large part due to his tremendous performance. An incredible sensitive emotional and, in the end, heartwarming story set against the horrors of the 2nd World War and the upheavals of evacuation that many people like my parents went through. My Mum said it was exactly like the way it is portrayed in the film. Just watch it. You won't be disappointed.
a brilliant tale.......2007-10-01
I first read goodnight Mr tom in school would you beleive and loved the story then. John Thaw brings the story to life in a brilliant performance.Nick Robinson is wonderful as little William Beech.
When William is evacuated to the west country, his life is never going to be the sam again. He stays with Mr tom (tom Oakley) they are soon insepearable. Their relationship is called time on when his un stable mother calls him back to London. What follows is a dash to save the small boy. With the ever present second world war threatening to tear lives apart, how long will it be before young William has to deal with the pain of loss. nick Robinson and John Thaw are the undisputed stars of this masterpiece.
