Peter Pan [1953] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Amazon.co.uk Review

Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instils an element of child-like wonder. The 1953 version of James M Barrie's story is colourfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: children who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fuelled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars There are Disney animation movies... and CLASSICS..........2007-10-19

This one is a CLASSIC in his own right!... not kidding...
It has the kind of drawings of the best period of the Disney factory... (not that I did not like RATATOUILLE for exemple... but IT'S NOT THE SAME! level of artistry...).
Of course the Barrie story is a must in his own right (and the "darker" side of Peter Pan in the book has been softened... and that is OK with me!).
The only DVD in my collection from the Disney factory.
As someone has pointed IT DOES NOT AGE WITH TIME!

RECOMMENDED BECAUSE IT IS THE PERFECT DISNEY ANIMATION FILM.

4 out of 5 stars not my favourite disney film but hey its disney its gonna be great anyway isnt it.......2006-05-23

with the amazing animation and the trademark singalongs you know this is a disney film what can you say when the people at disney pump out great film after great film? well for me this film doesnt quite deserve the prestigus 5 star mark purley because i thought that the story seemed very very rushed but apart from that the characters are great physically and vocually (espseacially mr smee)and the constantly present "disney magic" is there so i am not complaining (that much) definatly worth a look young or old

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Movie!.......2004-11-14

The children in the Darling family love story about Peter Pan. So naturally when he shows up one night looking for his missing shadow, they're thrilled to go back with him to Never Land. There, they face Indians and "the world's most famous crook," Captain Hook. Will they survive their adventures with the boy who never wants to grow up?

I have always had a fascination with this story. As a kid I remember checking the Disney picture book version out of the library week after week. When I finally got to see it, I was enthralled. There is just something magical about the story. It's partially the coming together of all the boyhood adventures in one place. Mermaids, Indians, and Pirates? What more could any boy want? And, of course, the ability to fly. The "You can fly" sequence over London is one of my all time favorites. The whole movie really is animated very well with a story that movies quickly from place to place with lots of humor to keep everyone entertained and gorgeous animation of the fanciful Never Land.

This special edition is worth tracking down. The picture (original full frame) is sharp and the surround sound is very nice. Extras include a documentary on the making of the movie and a promotional theatrical featurette from the original release. The "audio commentary" is unique. Hosted by Roy Disney, it consists of selections from interviews of the voice talent, live action models, animators, and animation historians. While not your usual commentary, it's fascinating stuff and well worth a listen. Finally, there's a treasure hunt game and DVD storybook for kids.

This movie still brings a smile to my face and probably always will. Maybe my friends are right when they say I love this movie so much because I always wanted to be Peter Pan.

4 out of 5 stars A great film for children and childlike adults........2003-03-01

I remember the first time I saw some of Peter Pan, it was on the Disney Christmas show there is every year on Christmas Eve in Denmark. The part that was featured is the part when Peter takes the children with him to Neverland, it is a film filled with great songs and the right amount of suspence and humour. There is real danger like when the mermaids try to drown Mary and when Captain Hook had caputred Tiger Lily, but there is also fun and laughter. Personally I have always liked the crocodile, the way it moves it's tale as the clock beats.
As an adult my love for this movie hasn't decreased, I am now ready to more fully embrace the tragedy of Peter Pan loosing his family and the perdicament the children find themselves in. Being a child forever and being happy or experiencing adulthood and the pain but also the joys you can't comprehend as a child.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2003-01-21

Why are old Disney's some much better than more recent ones? Because much more is left to your imagination and the action is less fast and less aggressive. Also, verbal cracks and jokes are much more in abundance.

Peter Pan's definetely one of the best Disney movies. The plot is great, the characters are convincing (even Tinkerbell) and emotions are never over-the-top or sacharine. There's enough action in it to keep you spellbound (even at 33!!).

The great thing about is that the whole story makes completely sense in the eyes of many a kid (I have 3). It feeds on their imagination & still expects them to make clever judgements.

Enough said, it's a good story, brilliantly drawn. Modern day kids still love it!

4 out of 5 stars Fellini in transition.......2007-08-23

I Vitelloni signalled Fellini's move away from neo-realism, with all the trademarks (dwarves, older women, outrageous costumes, anecdotes replacing narrative) that would later become so exaggerated making brief and more naturalistic appearances in his apparently aimless tale of a bunch of time-wasting friends in a small coastal town where the biggest events are growing a moustache or sideburns. That it somehow becomes more than the sum of its parts is quietly magical in its own way, and the amiably dry narration linking the events and non-events underlines the ebb and flow of the film nicely. Oddly enough, I was struck by the similarities to Tony Hancock's later 'The Punch and Judy Man,' which seems to touch on several aspects of small-town inertia without ever hitting the same heights.

There are multile editions of the film available, but Criterion's Region 1 NTSC DVD is the one to go for, offering a superb transfer with a good retrospective documentary, 'Vitellonismo,' which reveals a surprising degree of studio opposition to casting Alberto Sordi (then thought to be box-office poison after the disastrous commercial failure of Fellini's The White Sheik with the actor but whose career would virtually be made by the film) as well as the original theatrical trailer, stills gallery and booklet.

4 out of 5 stars A minor, yet touching work........2002-11-19

I Vitelloni (1953) is an early work by Federico Fellini, one that I feel is analogous to Bergman's Summer with Monika (1952)- both are nowhere near the heights of their obvious great works, but are the films where they began to perfect their distinctive styles.

This film can also be seen as an earlier-cousin of films of the nouvelle vague, particulalry Godard's Bande a Part- whose central triad waste their time in a similar way to the 'young calves' here (perhaps a further analogy towards the Beat movement is stretching the point, then again George Lucas was reported in Peter Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls to have used this as the model for American Graffitti. Does this mean Fellini created Happy Days?). In Italian cinema terms, the characters here are slightly more middle-class takes on those found in such classics as Pasolini's Accatone and Visconti's Rocco & His Brothers.

I Vitelloni may be far from a masterpiece of form and philosophy, but for those who were turned off by the less human aspects of Roma or City of Women there is much here. This is also interesting to contrast against the later work, Amarcord- in terms of memory and youth. This film is worth seeing and still has descedents to this day- most notably in Northern-Central American cinema with films like Beautiful Girls, Swingers and Y Te Mama Tambien. Another minor classic, which are sometimes more wonderful than the revered work- such as La Dolce Vita, which I'm still not that keen on! (8 1/2 is a different matter...)
