While watching An Evening with Kevin Smith 2 (let's skip over that stupid sub-title, shall we?), you may ask yourself, "Why should I give a **** about anything Kevin Smith has to say?"--and then you'll be laughing in agreement with a lot of what he says. For better or worse, the potty-mouthed creator of Clerks and Dogma is an expert at combining his own "View Askew" perspective with stand-up comedy and ribald Q&A with (mostly) appreciative audiences. The novelty here is that Smith (now looking richer and more custom-tailored than he did on the cover of An Evening with Kevin Smith) is equally at home with fans in Toronto and London, where his cross-cultural observations inform much of their humorous interaction. Whether he's discussing the X-Men movies as homosexual allegory, recalling how his wife caught him masturbating to pictures of her that he shot for Playboy, or making prescient observations about Mel Gibson's career me! ltdown (just a few of the many topics covered here), Smith remains admirably frank about his fan-base, his limited skills as a film-maker, and his counter-cultural status as a chubby fan-boy who made good in Hollywood. Even when he tests your tolerance with opinions best kept to himself, Smith is a focused observer of his own milieu, willing to expose his insecurities while refusing to suffer fools in his audience (and there are more than a few).
As with his previous stand-up DVD, Smith welcomes frequent (and now drug-free) co-star Jason Mewes on-stage for some extreme (and extremely funny) sex-talk, including demonstrations of Mewes' "half-half-whole" technique (don't ask), and later (as a disc 2 bonus feature) approaching young London women with a the kind of pick-up lines (like "Let me get up in them guts") that only a guy like Mewes could get away with. Dropping F-bombs like there's no tomorrow, Smith is crude but intelligent (nobody makes it on luck alone), and this two-disc set will satisfy established fans and would-be converts alike. Likewise, Smith-haters will find nothing to change their minds, since Smith occasionally comes across as smug and self-satisfied, even when he's really not. What matters here is the humor of a self-effacing guy who's never quite sure if he deserves his own success. That puts Smith on even terms with his fans, and it's that dynamic, more than anything else, that makes these concer! ts a whole lot of fun. --Jeff Shannon

tip top stuff .......2007-09-10
An evening with kevin smith 2 is a very nice and generous release, two dvds, two shows, one in canada, one in london, two shows with different stories and jokes, who could ask for more?
Kevin Smith for those in the dark is the director and star of cult classics like clerks and mallrats, who has also found a demand to cameo in things he loves such as the new die hard movie and law and order,he is a geek of sorts and this is his stand up shows albeit with a twist, the whole thing centres around questions from an adoring public, most of which are,yes you guessed it,geeks.
Nevertheless, this is funny stuff, maybe not as funny as some would have you believe,i wasnt screaming the house down, falling off my chair, vomiting from the pain of laughter or such, but i was entertained and found smith to be excellent at telling stories that are insightful and crude,in parts this is very blue, but it works, well for me anyway.
beyond tedious.......2007-09-03
The set up is the same as before - Kevin Smith is asked some inane questions by a bunch of sycophantic nerds who, if not trying to massage his ego outright, make lots of not-really-that-obscure pop culture references so it's abundantly clear they like they same things as the director and that they know a lot about his career.
As per his films, his responses revolve around making clichéd sex and drug references which would be funny if they weren't already so well known.
His sing-song voice gets on my nerves as well! Avoid.
Smith on very funny form once again.......2007-03-01
It would have been easy for Kevin Smith to call this one The Evening Strikes Back or the more over-used Evening 2: Electric Boogaloo, so full credit for going with this slightly awkward Die Hard joke. Who doesn't like a good Die Hard reference? This is another collection of footage from Kevin Smith's traveling Q&A sessions, which are halfway between a stand-up comedy show and the kind of personal appearances that pop stars do at the local branch of HMV.
Where the first Evening film took segments from a number of different shows and edited them into one long performance, part two takes two separate shows (one in Toronto, one in London) and gives a disc to each. The result of this is a more coherent feel than the episodic original.
Smith is on fine form again, regaling his audiences with stories that range from Dora The Explorer to the British Press to the gay phenomenon of 'bears'. Also covered are his aborted attempt to make a Green Hornet film and the terrible reception given to his Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez film, Jersey Girl. We even get some follow-up to the stories he told on the last DVD, including Prince's reaction to having his eccentricities mocked so openly, and a surprising reaction from Superman producer Jon Peters.
There's not much more to say about this one without simply re-hashing the very funny stories Smith tells. Suffice to say, this is just as hilarious and insightful as Evening part one, so if you liked that then this sequel will not disappoint.
Inside The Mind Of Kevin Smith.......2007-02-21
The sequel to the original An Evening with Kevin Smith.
I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith's movies and if you enjoy his DVD commenteries then this is right up your street.
From watching Dora The Explorer whilst high, to what links Chuck Norris, Chewbacca and Jesus Christ, the english media, a very alternative ending to Lord oF The Rings, shooting your wife for playboy, Prince as a jehovah witness, your parents having a quickie in a public toilet and Ninja's saving Jesus from the cross just some of the topics that Kevin Smith can deviate to from a simple question like "do you ever get writers block"
Here Smith is live on stage answering questions on disc one form a largerly student audience in Toronto and on the 2nd disc in London. The whooping from the audience in Toronto compaired to London makes perhaps the 2nd disc funnier where Smith isn't interupted as much.
Smith has his pet "chav" in toe with Jason Mewes making guest appearance.
This is 3 hours of very funny anecdotes and Smith who uses real incidents to create dialogue for his films is at times painfully candid much to the embarrasement of his wife and mother.
Only thing I would say about this DVD is there are a lot of references to the original An Evening With kevin Smith and if you want to get the most out of this one you should really try and get your hands on a copy of the first one to watch first.
Definately worth watching and look out for quite a few easter eggs across the 2 discs as well.
Incredibly funny, even better than his first evenings.......2007-01-17
This is simply one of the funniest Question and Answer dvds out there. It's a must have for any Kevin Smith fans, as many of his anecdotes, featured in this dvd set, end up being part of the script of Clerks 2.
These dvds will make you laugh out loud almost uninterrupted, and it's something even people who have never heard of Smith's work will enjoy.
Excellent purchase, would rate it even higher than 5 stars if i could

To know the origin of "Snoochie-Boochies," you must spend An Evening with Kevin Smith. The Jersey-bred auteur of low-budget comedy proves equally adept as an uncensored raconteur, regaling five college audiences--his most devoted demographic--in this two-disc compilation of lively Q&A. Sporting his trademark slacker garb, Smith occasionally bites the loyal, sometimes moronic hands that feed him (as a result, audience participation is drop-dead hilarious), but he's arguably the most publicly and personally honest film-maker to survive the insanity of Hollywood. His best stories lift the veil of show-biz decorum, describing absurd meetings with studio executives over his ill-fated screenplay Superman Lives; razzing the artsy pretensions of director Tim Burton; or exposing Prince (who hired him to direct a never-completed documentary) as a self-absorbed Jesus freak. These attacks aren't baseless; Smith's too smartly good-natured to provoke without purpose, and with an onstage visit by Jason Mewes ("Jay" to Smith's "Silent Bob"), this ribald, sharply assembled Evening compares favorably to Richard Pryor with its outrageous blend of comedy and candour. --Jeff Shannon

Very, very funny.......2007-03-01
In this one, writer and director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, etc.) invites you to spend an evening in his company. Sit back and watch as he eats a nice meal with his wife, takes a quick shower, watches three episodes of Law & Order, then throws the rubbish out before going to bed.
No, that's not what this is about. Who would watch that? This one is about Mr Smith standing before various audiences of his fans and answering whatever questions they ask. That's it. There are no poop monsters or lesbians or Mark Hamill cameos or anything.
The pleasant surprise of this DVD set, which features excerpts from various Q&A sessions carried out on a tour across America, is that Smith is as funny, engaging, frank and profane as any of the characters in his films. He's refreshingly honest, both about his abilities as a director and his adventures in Hollywood, and he sheds light on a side of show business that you rarely get to hear about. Particularly hilarious are his stories about Tim Burton, Prince, and the almost surreal experience of writing a Superman screenplay for producer Jon Peters.
With three and a half hours (split across two discs) of what is basically a guy standing and talking, you would think this would outstay its welcome, but I don't think I was bored at any point during this one. It's very, very funny and as entertaining as any stand-up comedy show. If you're a Kevin Smith fan, this is definitely worthy of your time.
Really entertaining.......2006-04-16
Q&A with one of America's leading independent filmmakers. Kevin is really entertaining, and comes out with some great anecdotes. Definitely recommended if you enjoyed his films.
Just watch it.......2006-01-03
Living in the UK, this will probably be the closest you get to seeing one of Mr. Smiths lectures. If you are even remotely interested in making films then this is a must see. If you watched the extras on any of his movies, you will love this DVD. If you just like hearing an intelligent, and successful guy talk passionately about his job and life with style and humour, watch this DVD.
This is one of the few non-film DVDs I have watched more than once, and not felt like I was wasting my time.
Does exactly what it says on the tin!.......2005-07-20
Let me make this very clear: if you like Kevin Smith's films, you will really love this DVD. If you don't, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are willing to let a lot of material fly over your head. Kevin spends loads of time talking about the characters and plots of his various films - all of which is interesting and funny - but there's also other stuff which is just gold-dust. His account of how he was drafted in to write a script for a new Superman film is just brilliant: the producer tells him that he must follow these rules: 1) Superman cannot fly, 2) Superman cannot wear his costume, and 3) At some point Superman must fight a giant spider. I challenge anybody not to find this section of the DVD worth its price alone! Almost as good is when he recalls his production of a DVD with the music artist Prince... In fact, forget what I said at the beginning of this review: you HAVE to buy this DVD, whether you're a fan or not.
More stand up than lecture.......2004-10-19
Smith entertains large halls of US university students in these edited highlights of his Q&A lecture tour. Obscenely conversational and confident throughout; Kevin cheerfully humiliates several of his young, star-struck inquisitors, phones his colleages on-stage, and delivers hilarious anecdotes that would be tediously long from anyone else. Essential viewing for anybody familiar with his films. Includes an appearance by Jason Mewes.
