Marvellous!.......2005-04-15
There is no other word to describe it. I am talking about both the unbelievebly bargain price and the magnificence of the films.
To get it out of the way, 'Tale of Two Cities' is only very good. It is not one of the best Dickens stories (but it is still Dickens), and it is not directed by David Lean, however Dirk Bogarde still does extremely well and it is enjoyable.
Right, now we come to the masterpieces: these are certainly two of the greatest top 100 movies ever made, in anyone's list, in mine both are top 20. As far as I am concerned, if you start off with a great story then you will have a good film. What these two films add is acting so brilliant that it could persuade you to alter your sexuality if it so desired, and direction so grainy amd wonderful, that sunny beaches and snow-capped mountains seem dull in its shadow.
In terms of quality for money, this is the best bargain you will ever get, and I am not just talking about DVDs.
An Excellent Trio.......2004-06-26
This excellent trio of Dickens' masterpieces reflect the genius of the master writer.
Tale of Two Cities captures the mood of the time. A minor criticism is that the crowd scenes lack the number of people used in the earlier film of the story starring Ronald Coleman. Dirk Bogarde's interpretation of the sad Sydney Carton is true to the character created by Dickens. The final guillotine scene with the famous quote "It is a far, far better thing........" is a highlight of the film.
Oliver Twist is one of David Lean's best films. His direction is faultless. The dark forboding atmosphere he creates draws the viewer hypnotically into the story of Oliver the waif who endures many hardships before a realistic happy ending. Look out for the excellent Alec Guinness as Fagin.
Great Expectations, another David Lean film. John Mills gives his usual convincing performance. Again David Lean's direction is beyond reproach. Not one of my favourite Dickens' tales but worth watching.

'Cleopatra Jones' is a must see for 70s buffs........2007-07-04
I think Tamara Dobson is absolutely stunning in the movie she's no Pam Greir but she does have some spunk in her. 'Cleopatra Jones' is one of my favourite 1970s exploitation movies. While technically blaxploitation it bears very little resemblance to the grittiness and relative realism of 'Shaft', 'Superfly' or 'Black Caesar'. It is closer to 'Black Belt Jones' meets James Bond, especially the spectacular opening sequence in Turkey. If you don't take it too seriously this is fantastic fun.
Tamara Dobson, as Special Government Agent Cleopatra Jones, is beautiful, sassy and one not to be mess with. Her lover's (Bernie Casey - 'Never Say Never Again') half-way house is under threat of closure after a dubious drug bust. Cleo suspects the involvement of a crooked cop (the always menacing Bill McKinney - 'Deliverance'), and local drug big wig Mommy (Shelley Winters as a larger than life lesbian leather queen!). Mommy and her henchmen (one of which is the legendary Paul Koslo - 'The Omega Man') try everything in their power to stop Cleopatra, but hell, look at her moves! her clothes! her Afro! Who do you think is gonna win here?! And then there is the romantic scene with her and Bernie Casey which is not explicit but intense.
While the movie can be classified as "cheesy" by many, it does have action, adventure, and romance. The action is non-stop-Cleo is always kung fuing someone or driving the hell out of her Corvette to get away from the bad guys. Also, there a pretty neat scene where she rides a motorcycle up a steep hill to everyone's dismay (if you happen to catch CJ on DVD or VHS, use pause on this scene-it is clearly a Caucasian male, with brown makeup, who is actually riding the motorcycle).
A stylish, silly and wonderfully entertaining trash classic. Directed by Jack Starrett ('Slaughter', 'Race With The Devil') and co-written and produced by actor Max Julien ('Psych-Out', 'The Mack') is a must see.......... Who is that Bad Mamma Jamma?
I can't believe studios actually made movies so TERRIBLE!!!.......2006-10-15
They named Ed Wood the worst director in Hollywood but after watching this turd I realize the honor should be awarded to whoever directed this movie.
I can't believe Shelley Winters agreed to play a role in this movie.
I'm not talking so much about the 70's slang stuff because I remember some good movies from that era. But it does date the movie. But I have to admit the dialog and script are just as bad as the direction.
briliant!!!!!.......2006-01-02
A brilliant movie, an era of the blacksplotation mark of the early 70's, when bruce lee style kung fu kicks were well in fashion and when women like shelly winters were also baddies, this gives way for domination marks for justice, the film that makes kicking butt actresses like tamara dobson bring life into other great movies, bernie casey and antonio fargas also stars
