5 out of 5 stars "Algiers" is a sharp, shrewd, and wonderful film.......2007-07-30

The 1938 film "Algiers" is a superb cinematic period piece with sharp dialogue(some of it written by the great James Cain), great camera work, and wonderful ensemble work from the cast. Looking forward to the film noir period, this film makes great use of the symbolic play between light and darkness and it has a great eye for grotesque and/or sardonic physiognomies. I love how the camera occasionally lingers on a face to register subtle changes of emotion. The Casbah is portrayed as a kind of maze with the French master criminal at the centre of it. I cannot praise the ensemble work here high enough. Every little touch is just perfect and even the smallest performance right on the button. I got a particular kick out of the couple who wanted passionately to sample "local music." Is this prophetic humour or what? It foretells the whole fascination with "world" music that is still with us today(and satirically tweaks the patronizing attitude that often goes with such an interest). I love the portrayal of the perfectly awful man who is the fiance of the French master criminal's (main) love interest - golddiggers out there should take note! I also get a huge kick out of the actor playing the local police officer - a masterpiece of sly shrewdness(but with the occasional touch of humanity). It's great how the cameras snake through the Casbah, occasionally catching some telling pieces of seemingly insignificant detail. It mirrors the serpentine mood of the film itself. The great French criminal, in effect, just wants to go home. But would he ever be happy if he got there? We - and he- will never know. Here he is the rooster in a rather small henhouse(would that romantic conquests were that easy!), but there he'd just be another man on the run. Really, this is sort of like a pre-WW2 "Casablanca" rewritten by the great Leo Malet. And, indeed, the film toys with the idea of the Casbah - like Casablanca - being, as it were, a state of mind. The dialogue is delightful and endlessly quotable. The playful menace of the film itself is a joy to behold. This film deserves cult status. I certainly plan to watch this over and over again. Go to the Casbah and just maybe - unlike the protagonist - you'll never want to leave....Greg Cameron, Surrey, B.C., Canada.
