4 out of 5 stars A REALLY GOOD SLASHER FILM.......2007-10-27

Traveling to the countryside to study, lesbian college students Marie, (Cecile De France) and Alexia, (Maiwenn)and arrive at their farmhouse during the night. Settling in for the night with Alex's Father, (Andrei Finti) and Mother, (Oana Pellea) they don't notice a truck pull up. The Driver, (Philippe Nahon) slaughters the entire family, taking Alexia with him. Leaving the scene with Marie unexpectedly in tow, they come to a rest in a gas station but he eventually gets away. With no help available from the police, Marie sets out on her own to track down the truck driver and get her revenge as well as rescue Alexia.

The Good News: There was a really pleasant thrill ride. We are immediately shaken up in our seats in the first few minutes, where we see the killer in a van parked in a field using a severed head to perform oral sex on himself before tossing the head out the window and driving off. It is a sign that clearly announces the intention to leave the boundaries of all notions of good taste well behind. One of the most impressive things about the film is the way it engages all the senses, especially sound, to create a mood of mounting dread and suspense. It's all about being haunted by the squeaks of the killer's shoes on the floor, the labored breathing as he walks up the stairs, or the dull sound his bloodied scalpel makes when he wipes it off on his overalls. They play just as important role in this as anything else in the film, and it works absolutely marvelously. The first half of the film is as good as anything out there, being this mounting and mounting of suspense through an ingenious use of having the characters survive the slaughter through the house and staying just out eye-view from the killer. There's really no way else to describe it, there's really nothing like it. Every trick in the suspense play-book is used, with hiding in the room where the killer lurks, covering their tracks, and really depending on the presence of the killer there to get most of the suspense out of the film. It is simply a fantastic series of scenes that really work and are quite powerful. That plays into the fact that this is an incredibly gory film. We get a head crushed off by a desk, an insane slit throat, an axe in the chest, a piece of glass in one's foot, a severed hand, a vicious head bashing by barbed wired stick, a messy saw blade attack, some good old fashioned stabbings, some slashings on the body and more. Even better than that is that all of the gore was practical and CGI is nowhere to be seen. The ending does have a lot going for it as well, including some really great moments. There's a really impressive car chase that ends in a really nice stunt, tons of gore inflicted on all the participants, some incredibly clever stalking scenes and just a relentless pace. Then there's the ending, which while it isn't the best one ever done, but instead it's a really clever and nicely used throughout one that does leave a lasting mark. All in all, this wasn't that bad.

The Bad News: Frankly, there's only one thing in here that really doesn't work, and that's the twist ending. In the attempt to blow the mind with the mega-twist that re-writes the logic of all that came before, instead all that is achieved is that it completely evaporates the plausibility of all that did come before it. How did that phone call get made? How did that car crash happen? What's going on in the back of the truck? Why the scene where the guy pleasures himself with a severed head? What was the gas station guy looking at? Even the little things require, essentially, that the viewer re-write the plot as he or she sees fit. That there is the reason why this doesn't work, which isn't that it's a badly done twist, just an illogical one. It's up to the viewer to decide the relevance and worthiness of it.

The Final Verdict: While not the modern masterpiece that has been ascribed to it, it's still a really creepy and incredibly entertaining film that really doesn't have that much going against it. There's still enough going for it to be worthy of a look-see, but don't expect the film to be as great as it's reputation has given it.

1 out of 5 stars Never before has so much blood and gore been wasted on such an atrocious movie.......2007-10-08

If this movie were a person, I would devote the rest of my life to hunting him down and making sure he spent the rest of his life in a solitary confinement cell. I absolutely hated this movie - I hated every single thing about it. Normally, I love all the blood and gore I can get, but when the movie giving me all that blood and gore is telling me a terrible story and then egregiously insulting my intelligence to boot, I have to yell "Shenanigans!" And just to rub a little salt in the wound, it's French. Sacre bleu! How in the world did this movie ever win a single award from any entity even remotely associated with the film industry? It's the equivalent of naming Yoko Ono female vocalist of the decade. Come to think of it, I think I would rather listen to Yoko Ono sing for ninety minutes than ever have to suffer through this putrid mess of a film ever again.

So what goes on here? Well, Marie (Cecile de France) goes home one weekend with her college friend Alex (Maiwenn Le Besco), supposedly to study. Yeah, right. Anyway, Mr. Magoo could see that Marie (who is an inherently unlikable character, by the way) sees Alex as more than a friend. After everybody basically turns in for the night, a stranger in a horribly ugly truck invades the house and sets about systematically slashing everyone in the house - well, almost everyone. He kidnaps Alex, at which point Marie sets out to follow him and free Alex from his clutches. Basically, the huntee becomes the hunter becomes the huntee. All the while, blood and gore are the viewer's constant companion. Sounds like a movie worth watching, doesn't it? Well, it's not. For one thing, Marie - well, let's just say that she has obviously never seen Scream because she doesn't know the first thing about how to survive in a horror movie. I wish I could go into more detail about that here, but it's too germane to the plot. Oh, yes, the plot. Just moments into the film, it's pretty obvious what is going to happen. You don't want to believe any director could be that stupid, though - but this one is. The last thing the horror genre needs is a director willing to work this hard just so he can insult the intelligence of everyone in his audience. Blarrgggh! High Tension makes me want to scream.

Speaking of the film's title, I think it's a misnomer because I didn't feel the slightest amount of tension at any point in the story. I will concede that some viewers will find this movie exceedingly suspenseful; heck, a few will even think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. That's fine. In the opinion of this veteran horror fan, though, High Tension is one of the most ineffective, disappointing films I've seen in years.

We s Craven actually referred to director Alexandre Aja as the future of horror. Please, if you know Wes Craven personally, beseech him to seek psychiatric help immediately, as he has quite obviously lost his ever-loving mind.

5 out of 5 stars I won't let anyone come between us anymore...........2007-02-09

To be honest, I feel somewhat privileged to be one of the first people to review "High Tension" - it is unusual (and pleasant) to write on a subject that isn't either over-reviewed or, as is usually the case, under-rated. My only hope is that I do the film the justice it deserves...

The aptly named "High Tension" is the original French version of "Switchblade Romance". Briefly, "Marie and Alexia are classmates and best friends. Hoping to prepare for their college exams in peace and quiet, they decide to spend a weekend in the country at Alexi's parents' secluded farmhouse. But in the dead of the night, a stranger knocks on the front door, and with his first swing of his knife, the girls' idyllic weekend turns into an endless night of horror".

"High Tension" is a great film for three reasons. Firstly, as already hinted at, the film lives up to it's title. It is one of the only horror movies that I have seen in a VERY long time that has managed to strike the right balance between suspense and violence. During the scenes where the killer is searching the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque" house, I was (quite lierally) on the edge of my seat. On the other hand, there were times later in the film where I was shouting at the television (a very rare trait for me, the self-confessed horror fan), encouraging Marie to run away from the chain-saw wielding maniac. In my opinion, any horror movie that has you interacting with the characters, urging them to survive, has achieved the objectives it set out for itself. I am not suggesting that the film is perfect by any stretch of the imagination - there are parts of the story-line that are either unnecessary or confusing, given what happens later in the film (keep your eyes open for the decapitation in the truck at the very beginning and then ask yourself "why" this was included when you have watched the film). What makes up for these little inconsistencies, however, are the other subtle touches that give the film it's true meaning - check out the graffitti in the service station toilet that pronounces "je suis vivant" (translation: "I am alive"), appropriately placed just above Marie's head as she is hiding from the killer.

The second point worthy of note is the amazing twist at the end of the film. I drive my "better half" mad by predicting the killer in films and books, so he was relieved when I managed to get to within a whisker of the credits before I truly realised what was going on. Whether you have seen one horror film, one hundred or one thousand, quite simply, you won't see this ending coming. Better still, no matter whether you watch this film once, one hundred times or a thousand times, you still won't see the ending coming - back-tracking for clues (like we all did when we watched "Sixth Sense" the second time round) does not reveal anything additional to the plot.

The third notable point about the film is the exceptional soundtrack. I will hold my hands up and say that I am probably biased here because the main source of music comes from a band who I have seen live recently and who blew me away - Muse. Nevertheless, there are some catchy French tunes that, on seeing the film enough times, will have you singing away in French in the shower (though probably with no idea as to what you are singing about).

Without wanting to state the obvious, the only real draw-back of the film is that it is spoken in French, subtitled in English. I know one or two people who will not watch a film if it is subtitled, finding it hard to keep up ("Look away and you will miss the thread of the story-line"...). If you are inclined to shy away from foreign films for this reason, please give this one a chance - to be honest, there is very little in terms of conversation once the action gets going, and after the first five minutes of the film (when most of the dialogue takes place), you don't consciously realise you are following the text anyway.

Anyone inspired to watch this film because of this review, I am certain that you won't regret it. For those of you who have already watched the film and are looking for a piece of work that is similar to sink your teeth into - try "Intensity" by Dean Koontz.
