Total Recall [1990] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Amazon.co.uk Review

A triple-bill of Schwarzenegger at his muscular monosyllabic best:The Running Man is an action thriller based on an early story by Stephen King. When Arnold is chosen as a contestant on the ultimate reality TV show, all hell breaks loose. Cheesy sets and a slimy role for game-show host Richard Dawson make this violent mess of mayhem a candidate for guilty pleasure; it is the kind of movie that truly devoted Arnold fans will want to watch more than once.

Total Recall is the science-fiction blockbuster from 1990, loosely based on Philip K Dick's short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". Oscar-winning special effects and violent action propel the twisting plot, in which Arnold manipulates his manipulators in a world of dazzling high technology. Director Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Starship Troopers) indulges his usual penchant for gratuitous bloodshed, but the movie has enough cleverness to rise above its excesses.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history.--Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Consider that a divorce!.......2007-09-26

Worth 5 stars for that line alone. Who cares if Arnie cant act this film doesnt require it. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Well paced Sci-Fi.......2005-09-12

This is one of Arnold's best. Take a great lineup of actors. Throw in a good story by Philip K. Dick (screen play by Ronald Shussett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman). Add a well designed set that make you feel you are there. And you have the makings for a pretty good movie. With a few exceptions it is hard to tell the good guys format the bad and with several plot twists it is hard to know if you should root for the good guy or the bad. A hint stick with Arnold and you can not go wrong (Maybe).

Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) a mild mannered construction worker, who is happily married to Lori (Sharon Stone), and seems extraordinarily attracted to life on Mars. Now Mars is settled and basically ran by a mining consortium. And the least Douglas can do is take a vacation there. Discouraged by his wife he decided to take a virtual trip there.

Oh no, something has gone wrong. It turns out that unknown to him he is not Douglas Quaid. He finds out that his whole history is a lie. Now people are out to kill him and he must find out who he is and why. If he escapes, the journey will take him to Mars to fulfill his or someone's destiny. Good or bad we are along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Classic Sci-Fi Action Film.......2005-07-12

Although the film is 15 years old ... the subject matter is so contemporary it has all the ingredients to be a classic. First, it is about a colony of inhabitants on Mars, a planet which has been inhabited for at least 1/2 million years. Next, there is suspense, action and drama associated with a cover-up by an earth-based government agency which is tied to the secret identity of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwartzenegger). On the surface he is an ordinairy construction worker on earth ... yet his dreams and possible flash-backs of events and activities on Mars hint at something more deep and covert. Eventually he explores a fantasy vacation trip to Mars in a mind-altering program called Rekall ... to develop insight into his dreams. From this point forward the film explodes in a myriad of action-packed and creative directions ... all of which help unravel the implanted identity of Doug Quaid/Hauser. The film gains momentum and is nonstop action. It depicts Arnold Schwartzenegger as the super-charged hero who nearly single-handedly brings about justice ... on a distant planet. The casting in this film is superb: his earthly wife, Lori is played by Sharon Stone and his lover and partner on Mars, Melina, is played by Rachel Ticton. There is a cast of "Star-Trek"-like aliens that work in harmony with the earth colony to fight oppression. In the end Quaid discovers the suppressed technology which saves the climate of Mars for future generations. It is one outstanding film.

5 out of 5 stars Gore galore with Arnie at his very best!.......2005-06-02

This has to be Arnie's best film to date. He's done some other crackers (Commando, Red Heat) and some not so good (Jingle all the way), but I always look for this one in my collection when i'm bored. I won't bother explaining the storyline as you can read it somewhere above this review, however I will talk about what makes this movie as good as it is.

The action scenes are very impressive. Forget other fine gun fights in Commando or battles in The Running Man, this is the stuff to watch if you fancy seeing people being blasted into oblivion with futuristic hand guns. The blood is excessive to say the least, making this the most violent and extreme action i've seen from old Arnold in...forever! Fans of ultra violence step this way!

The acting isn't brilliant, but Arnie never was good at acting, he always seems to have this cheesiness about him when he speaks. However there are some decent scenes where the one liners are churned out, so do worry.

As for the story...it's very clever, that's all I can say. No nonsense. Paul Verhoven, I salute you!!! If you enjoy this, make sure to check out Starship Troopers and Red Heat!

5 out of 5 stars See you at the party Richter!!!!!.......2004-10-22

This is without question the best movie that Arnold Schwarzneggar has ever made. It is absolutely brilliant.
Arnie stars as Quaid a miner who has an obsession with Mars, for some unknown reason. He travels to a travel agents, which futuristically can implant the experience of a holiday without you leaving the room. Problem is the implant triggers off Quaids old memory, and it turns out he had his memory wiped. Quaid sets out to find out who he really his and discovers that he is the key to freeing the people of Mars and giving them oxygen. What happens next is nearly an hour and a half of non-stop violence and cheesy lines, and a woman with 3 breasts!!!
Arnie is at his best here and I can't praise this film enough. Arnie is an absolute God and I will always think of him as Quaid!
