ignore texas chainsaw massacre.......2008-02-06
forget about the texas chainsaw massacre for a second and you can appreciate that this film is actually really good. Granted it's hardly original however it does offer strong characters and genuine frights with good gorey death scenes. The cannibals themselves are decent and are really believable. The part where they explore their house is a good touch as it really deepens the characters of the cannibals.
So in conclusion if you are going 2 compare this to the texas chainsaw massacre you will never fully enjoy this film as it doesn't stand a chance in comparison however look at it as an independent take on a cannibal orientated horror and you can appreciate the quality of this film.
not bad.......2008-01-16
i was surprised that this film really did scare me, in fact i had to turn all the lights on in the middle of the night after watching it because i dint want to sleep in the dark!this may not be a classic but its definately getting up there with the scary films we all love to watch!
A Future Classic.......2007-12-31
This excellent little slasher film starring Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington harps back to such classics of the backwoods slasher genre as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. The story is simple: Five friends are driving along a road when their jeep crashes into the car of another man. The group go to look for help and find an old building. However, things soon take a sinister turn and they realise that the car crash might have been the least of their worries after all.....
This film is particulary gory and for this reason, gorehounds will not be disappointed. The special prosthetic make-up effects were created by the Stan Winston Studio - the company that created the effects in all three Terminator films as well as in the Jurassic Park films - and are one of the most fascinating parts of the film. The production standards are very high in general as is the acting of the whole cast. Unlike in many other slasher films, the audience actually cares for the characters created here and root for them.
A must see for any horror fan and anyone who enjoys a well-made and atmospheric film.
Ridiculous Characters, Zero Plot - Big Time STINKER!, .......2007-12-25
I watched Wrong Turn 2: Dead End and was quite impressed with the film, esp since it's a direct to DVD sequel... I had watched parts of the original before and didn't like it but I figured I'd try it again -- Nope! Wrong Turn is a stinker! The characters are unbelievably irritating and stupid! The plot is zip! And if you're up for some creative campy deaths... Outta luck again! This movie feels like it should be the second rate sequel - Watch it only for the sake of seeing what led up to Wrong Turn 2 (Which I highly recommend!).
BETTER THAN IT SHOULD BE.......2007-11-01
Late for a meeting, Chris Flynn, (Desmond Harrington) takes a shortcut and rams into a car in the middle of the woods. The owners of the car, Jessie Burlingame, (Eliza Dushku) Carly, (Emmanuelle Chriqui) Scott, (Jeremy Sisto) Evan, (Kevin Zegers) and Francine, (Lindy Booth) decide on a plan and wander through the woods to find some help. Finally happening upon a house in the middle of the woods. After exploring the house and finding different sets of body parts and other collectibles spread through the house, they witness the owners slicing up bodies. Making a break for it, they head into the woods, but the owners give chase and have a few surprises in the woods in store for them.
The Good News: This actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It features some great photography of the wood-lines, and this sets up some nice suspense in the beginning of the movie. The feeling of alone and being separating is perfectly captured, making their plight a little more believable. The hike through the woods is perfectly rife with suspense, and it's a nice series of sequences that help set this up. The scenes in the house are another great example. The house is so nicely realized as a disgusting mess of a place, with body parts, souvenirs, belongings and tools laid over the place and with the way it was photographed, it draws suspense in. It's a pretty effective sequence. The methods of hunting are also quite nice, and it was a nice change to see some new kills in here besides the usual machete impaling and decapitations. Arrows are the main weapon used, and they are quite effective. It drives home the fact that they really are backwoods individuals, as these are quite nice and messy. They are quite nice for old-school fans, and include an arrow to the back of the head, several in the back and one through the eye, as well as a choking with a barbed-wire gag and stabbed with a tire iron. There are several other kills in here that are just as messy, as well as seeing the eviscerated bodies and dismembered limbs of previous victims lying around, so this will no doubt please gore-hounds. The fact that it starts off right off the bat and then never lets up the pace is a great attribute. It's not always a good thing to always want to know about the characters, as it sometimes does distract from the carnage, and this one wisely doesn't do that. Just enough to know who they are, and they into the battle. It's quite nice to see a film like that, and this is a great example of that kind of film.
The Bad News: There was a couple things about this that really didn't sit well. Firstly, for all the talk about the film being a throwback to the earlier films of the 70s and 80s, it only works in tone. Everything else really isn't all that much of a throwback. The biggest flaw to the film is the end of the movie. With so much done to prove that these are crazy killers, they in fact take one character hostage only to have a chance for a rescue. There was plenty of time to have done what they were set up to do, but it doesn't happen. It's not exactly that big of a gripe, but it is one against the film. There is also a large amount of similarities to other horror films of the time. Young teens pursued by a family of in-bred cannibal mutant families, they keep a collection of cars, body parts and collectibles around the house, and both feature the female lead in a tight tank top for the duration of the movie, although why that's here in this section is a mystery. Just an example of the coincidences between the films is the real cause for concern here.
The Final Verdict: This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and is a lot better than what the general consensus is. I could be on the wrong side here, but I quite enjoyed this one. Give it a serious chance, it could be quite enjoyable at times.
