4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good DVD.......2007-07-22

I must say that I have always been a Tom & Jerry fan, so it was long overdue for me to start owning the collection. I bought Volumes 2 & 3 at the same time as getting this one, and despite any editing and overdubbing, I still enjoy settling down to a couple of hours fun entertainment from these timeless characters. My little toddler son also enjoys the Tom & Jerry cartoons - and it takes a lot to get him to sit still for a few minutes - he really seems to like the mouse character as he squeals with delight and claps his hands. Good DVD, would recommend this to all fans, old and young alike.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, marred by some censorship.......2007-06-24

This is a near-complete collection of the early cartoons, which remain timeless classics, with plenty of slapstick humour on offer.

I grew up with the original, unedited, T & J cartoons that were broadcast in the UK until 2000, and released on VHS in the '80s and '90s, so it's highly disappointing to see that you can't get some of the originals any more. This otherwise top-notch collection is marred by many PC cuts, most notably the frequent use of the overdubbed version of Mammy Two-Shoes (though at least she appears in the cartoons rather than being edited out altogether).

Okay, by all means they should release edited versions of the cartoons for people who find the originals too racially offensive, but no way should we have phased out the distribution of the original unedited versions- most people weren't offended by them, and many find the edited versions inferior to the originals.

The above said, the Classic Collection is the best collection of Tom & Jerry cartoons available- other versions are either more heavily edited, or are lower quality. Hopefully in future someone will release a set of unedited Tom & Jerry cartoons on DVD in the UK, of similar quality to this release, but for now, if you want a set of T & J cartoons, this is the set to get.

I also own Volumes 2, 3 and 4; the same assessment applies to those volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Fast paced and excellent!!.......2007-02-06

In an era of pristine CGI animated movies it is great to see something that has aged so well as Tom and Jerry. Now that I have kids of my own I am getting to enjoy these cartoons all over again. They make me laugh out loud and the action makes me cringe at times but it is great fun and a nice contrast to the sanitised plots of modern children's entertainment. My kids adore them and it is nice to see something that maintains its appeal across several generations. I have this DVD as well as volume 2 and volume 3 all of which cover the classic era of the duo. I would recommend all three without hesitation.

5 out of 5 stars Tom & Jerry, not exclusivly Hanna & Barbera "stuff".......2006-03-09

In the period between 1941 and 1955 there where at least 2 separate teams at MGM under Quimbys supervision, namely Hanna & Barbera and Tex Avery. It was a steady flow of ideas and cartoonist excahange between the 2 teams. It's quite obvious that Tex Avery had a strong influence on the early Hanna Barbera's use of typical wild Tex Avery gags, giving the early Tom& Jerry a certain Daffy & Elmer or Bugs & Daffy "feel" to them.
As can be seen in the later Hanna Barbera movies, they left this crazy influence and became more apropriate and Disney-family-like in story and style.
What a loss to us all !

5 out of 5 stars I want more!.......2004-11-25

Just received this DVD and now I have the complete collection till date. What can I say about T&J that hasnt been said already?! Just that it will be very hard to find anyone who can say that T&J arent a genius of epic proportions that will always transcend the boundaries of time and age. Its an absolute must for anyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver.......2005-06-19

Quite simply, fantastic.

It keeps my two year old amused while I catch up on some much needed sleep...what more can I say?!

5 out of 5 stars The classic show has finally arrived on DVD.......2005-05-29

I have always loved Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends getting into scrapes or working together in different stories. It has a moral to each episode such as friendship, trust and teamwork, I loved hearing Ringo Starr's voice narrating the series which is 21 years old since it was shown on television in 1984.

It's great having all twenty-six stories from the first series because it saves a lot of space on your shelf, it's good value for money and plus there's over two hours of accidents, fun and mishaps on the Island of Sodor. My favourite stories are Coal, Troublesome Trucks, The Flying Kipper, Whistles and Sneezes, Off the Rails, and many more.

Even adults and younger children alike will adore watching Thomas adventures on DVD with a good sharp picture and clear sound to boot. I reccommend this to fans, whether they're young or old because it brought back happy memories for me and it'll probably do the same for you!

Thanks for taking time to read this, I hope you find it useful!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding.......2005-03-29

This is the best ever Thomas The Tank Engine DVD ever. It got emotionally disturbing when Thomas came of the rails. My husband found it to much to handle and left, I've never seen him since. I would recommend this to people over 18 because little children may have a break down in later years to come.

5 out of 5 stars On a different level of classic..........2005-03-27

In recent times, later seasons of 'Thomas the Tank Engine' (now 'Thomas & Friends') are beginning to shunt it's origins further and further into the darkness of the past. Although it is always exciting to see new and original stories that were not adapted from Wilbert Awdry's 'Railway Series', there is truely no comparison to the delights of the classic first and season seasons of 'Thomas' from back in the early/late 80's.

This collection presents all 26 stories from the first classic series, all of which are adapted from the earlier volumes of the Railway Series. Made even more memorable by Ringo Starr's narration and the remarkable musical scores (I apologise for I cannot remember the composer's names!), these stories bring to life the Rly. Series in a way that stunned the world with awe. Where as more recent stories tend to focus on the importance of friendship and social skills, these classic tales deal with the comedy, sorrow, joys and tragedys of railway-life - which is exactly what Awdry wanted. Most of the stories that you see here are based on actual events that happened to one engine or another, somewhere in the world. For a taste of what it's REALLY all about - this DVD is essential for any fan, veteran or newly introduced.

Series 1 includes the world to the first seven engines of the main fleet, the concrete for the cast. Thomas, Edward, Gordon, Henry, James, Percy and Toby are established as family as time goes on, each with their own distinctive personalities. Thomas, who was at first cheeky, but grew wiser as time progressed. Edward, good-hearted and heart-moving. Proud Gordon, who's conceit often led to trouble. Henry, who's vainty and bad-health caused him many problems. James, flamboyant, rebellious and forever providing comic releif. Percy - baby-faced and adorable. Toby, quiet and sinless.

The Series begins with the memorable introduction of Thomas - flagship of The Railway Series and a landmark face in children's televison - followed by a comical incident in which he learns to hold back his cheekiness in the face of Gordon. Following this is an adaptation of the very first Rly. Series book - 'The Three Railway Engines' - which sees Gordon laughing on the other side of his smoke-box after taunting Edward, Henry's vanity leading to his temporary excile and all three brought together in harmony afterwards. We then see Thomas struggling with the reality of being station-pilot and his constant rebellion to escape from the small world he is confined too - and one memorable day in which a new-arrival called James has a terrible accident, Thomas' hard-work sees him rewarded with his very own branch line.

Following Thomas' 'escape' we see James brought into the spotlight - flamboyant, splendid and rebellious - who at first caused trouble for the Fat Controller, but then won back his honour not once, but twice. Whilst James establishes his place among the fleet, Thomas has some seperate adventures of his own on the branch line (with his coaches Annie and Clarabel, Terence the Tractor and Bertie the Bus).

Following this, the action turns darker. The loss of Thomas has caused upset and rebellion among the big engines, who go on strike after a string of humiliating events. Percy is drafted in as the new station-pilot, and after the peace is restored, the child-like new-comer realises the dangers of travelling on the main line with a free-mind. But Henry is still not happy, for we learn that his constant bad-health and lack of energy has put his career on the line. The problem is temporarily corrected by Welsh Coal, but disaster awaits Henry in the days that follow. By fate, an earth-shattering accident leads to a successful overhaul at Crewe, from which Henry emerges as a newer, stronger and happier engine.

After Henry teaches Gordon and some naughty school-boys a lesson, Thomas has some trouble with the police, which leads to the rescue of Toby the Tram Engine from retirement. In the light of Toby's arrival, James' conceit leads to a sticky accident. And after an ironic twist of pit-falls, Gordon and Thomas form an alliance of disgrace before all 7 friends are brought together in harmony for Christmas celebrations.

This DVD will bring tears of joy to veteran fans who remember the show in its youth, bringing back wonderful and charming memories. Newly introduced fans will see the further delights of the world of Sodor from the past - and hopefully come to appreciate the origins of this classic show even more.

5 out of 5 stars The First Classic Series.......2005-02-16

Way back in 1984, the first series of all-time favourite "Thomas the tank engine and friends" was produced. The show is still being made today, proving Thomas still enjoys enduring massive success.
The series got the show off to a great start. This is perfect for all Thomas fans, old and new! Stick in the DVD player and enjoy the full first 26 episodes of classic Thomas.

Finally what all Thomas the Tank Engine fan has been waiting for: Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends: Series 7 has arrived on DVD. Here are all 26 stories on one disc but some of them you might have seen on other Thomas DVD compilation titles, so it's nice to have them all-together. The intro scenes have changed since the very first series and but the music remains the same until the later stories when the music becomes more upbeat and the scenes of Thomas coasting along the track change too. But it had to happen sooner or later! Hope you enjoy this DVD as much as I have!

Amazon.co.uk Review

The second DVD in the collector's edition series features classic cartoons capers from the world's most famous cat and mouse duo, taking us in chronological order up to the 1950s episode entitled 'Safety Second'. This collection also includes the famous Oscar-winning installment 'The Cat Concerto', which sees Tom and Jerry turn a concert performance of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody into a pitched battle on the piano.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some more classic T&J, but still some annoying PC cuts.......2005-11-07

The Tom & Jerry series commenced in 'Volume 1' continues with all the cartoons from 'Solid Serenade' (1946) up to 'Safety Second' (1950). Within this collection we get to see Tom & Jerry in their most defining visual state, with some great rendering, stunning animation and generally very clean style.

This collection also contains the memorable 'The Cat Concerto', which won an Oscar and few T&J fans could fail to remember the battle between Tom and Jerry as the latter intervened while the former was trying so hard to play Liszt's 'Hungarian Rhapsody' on the grand piano on a concert stage. This is a classic masterpiece!

That having been said, though, the other cartoons are also full of energy and still generate a laugh.

There are two things I have so far noticed that mar this collection. 'Solid Serenade' has a sound glitch near the end that is very noticeable and is a bit off-putting. The other is that, like the previous collection, some political correctness has affected some of the cartoons. In some of the cartoons, once again the black maid Mammy Two Shoes has had her voice redubbed to make her sound like a white woman (but in other cartoons, such as 'A Mouse In The House', the dear original maid's voice and drawl is present throughout!), and some bits that supposedly poke fun at black people have been cut: a black-face gag is cut from 'A Mouse In The House' and 'The Truce Hurts', 'Tennis Chumps' has a different take on one with a different pose, and -- possibly the most affected -- 'The Little Orphan' is heavily cut to remove the aftermath of what happens in a scene involving Tom and a candle, and again the continuity is affected so the scene no longer makes sense.

So, all in all, a great collection, once again kept from the 5/5 scoring by some cuts.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets!.......2004-12-16

Classic, unadulterated Tom & Jerry, with nothing but great cartoons from the golden era. Just one niggle, a sound bug during one of the cartoons and some lacklustre editing for the DVD, but it's the content that matters and it still shines.

Volume 1 is equally good, while vol. 3 is great, but starts to trail off at the end due to poorer quality cartoons as production costs start getting cut. Volume 4 is absolutely horrible, dating from a time where production costs appear to have hit rock bottom, so don't even bother with vol. 5.

Get this without fear and re-live your childhood through some of the most imaginitive cartoon slapstick you'll ever find!

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of this series of dvds.......2004-10-20

Tom And Jerry - Classic Collection - Vol. 2 is probably the best in the current series of dvds dedicated to the classic duo.. Unfortunatley several of the cartoons have been edited and the voice of Mammy has been overdubbed.. That apart a first rate dvd that should be in everybody's collection

5 out of 5 stars 3 Hours of Tom and Jerry!!!!.......2004-05-01

The best cartoon ever made! put on DVD with nearly 3 hours worth!! its a treat! and worth the money! the picture and sound has never been better! the only thing I would say my disappoint is that theres no extras! like a making of Tom and Jerry!! but then again! cant complain when u get a ton of cartoons! great for the kids and family!

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for Children.......2007-12-23

My daughter started with Kipper aged 2yrs - she's now 3 1/2yrs and it hasn't lost its appeal. A selection of short stories usually around 10minutes ideal for bed-time. Clearly spoken English no slang. No violence, simple, bit educational - the parents like it and the kids as well. Nice and harmless.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-04-18

My 2.5 year old daughter absolutely adores this DVD, even though she seems to be quickly bored with other stuff. It kept her entertained for a very long car journey - what a life-saver.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-03-23

I have an English background but we live abroad and I'm raising my children (the older now 2 1/2yrs) bilingualy. So obviously I select the DVDs to watch very carefully - she is only allowed a minimum of television anyway. This one is perfect because:
- Enchanting nice stories, very loveable character
- of the 'good old' kind - unlike the typical Walt Disney stuff
- Nice English (not American) spoken
- Kipper has a very pleasant voice
- Each story has a perfect goodnight-length (approx. 10mins) and an obvious end (so there is no debating whether one can see any more)

5 out of 5 stars Really lovely!.......2006-02-12

My 21 month old is watching this as I type and ROARING with laughter. It's the first time he's ever really laughed at anything on TV. He's enthralled by this DVD in a way he hasn't been with Maisy or Bob the Builder or Baby Einstein. He loved all three of those so I'm quite amazed by the look of delight on his face when he sees Kipper!

These little cartoons are really lovely. The screen is very calm, with spare drawings and very little background. I like the way the screen is usually all white and bare except for the important things - the characters and whatever they are using, like a window (but no wall) and a basket (but no room, save for a faint line marking where the floor might stop and the wall starts). It's very easy on the eyes, and so calm compared to most children's TV!

Martin Clunes is excellent - better than Neil Morrissey is in Bob or Maisy. His voice is very soothing but full of character and fun.

The characters are warm and funny without being twee or sickly, and the whole thing just exudes cosiness and fun, without being irritatingly wholesome. But it is very wholesome. And, it's fun for adults to watch too. I could watch this over and over again. Perfect for snuggling on the sofa on rainy Sunday mornings. Kipper gives you the warm fuzzies like the programmes from your own chidlhood.

This is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Delighted with Kipper.......2005-09-24

My 22 month old daughter loved this DVD and watched it constantly for 2 weeks around France. Lovely simple but colourful animation and gentle music make it a winner. It was so pleasant that even my hubby and I enjoyed the repeats.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!.......2007-12-27

I was introduced to Bill Bailey by a friend who loned it to me off the cuff, to be honest these are the best DVDs I have ever borrowed. To me comedy beats all other genres it keeps you upbeat and happy. Bill Bailey brilliantly combines my passions of humour and music. His piano playing skills are amazing.
As afore mentioned some of the jokes are re-used but really its just another excuse to laugh your head off. I would recommend these DVDs to most people as together they are a masterpiece, whoever I would recommend borrowing or renting them first as it doesn't suit everyones sense of humour. Fans of Black Books will love these with their random, quirky humour.
Unfortunately amazon seems to have run out of these and the 'New and Used' being sold are a rip-off. I bought this for £25 when amazon originally sold it.

5 out of 5 stars Bloomin' Brilliant Bill Bailey Box-set.......2007-12-17

Bill is hilarious but £52.95 to £69.95? What gives? Has this set gone out of print? HMV is knocking them out for £20 right now (Dec 07). They also have Black Books for £15 - Bill is great in that, too. No, I don't work for HMV; I just don't like OTT prices.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant... but why do I need 2 copies??.......2007-11-25

I have Bewilderness and Part Troll and they still make me laugh out loud after watching each of them half a dozen time. Bill's quirky and unique sense of humour together with his undoubted but underused musical talent cannot be compared with anyone else. If you're a Billy Bragg or Chris de Burgh fan you will (if you have a sense of humour)love (or, if you have a failing sense of humour) hate Bailey's tributes to them! Watch out for his wondeful Chaucerian poem among many other highlights.

But, now my gripe - WHY WHY WHY do I have to buy a two or three disc set (including one or two DVDs I already own) in order to get the Cosmic Jam DVD? Come on Bill, make it available on its own, please.

5 out of 5 stars Value for money from a great comic.......2007-11-01

Bill Bailey has always had the ability to make me laugh with his flights of fantasy - the 'Argos Book of Dreams' is one concept that immediately springs to mind. But this set is worth buying if only for the wonderful 'romantic ballad' where love goes spectacularly wrong on a cosmic scale (that poor duck!) which reduces me to helpless tears of laughter every time I listen to it. Pure genius!

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly incredible!.......2007-02-15

I was absolutely blown away by the amazing comic genius of Bill Bailey. He combines amazing musical skills, with much randomness, with hilariousness and it works! Its just very very funny so buy it!

5 out of 5 stars great toddler entertainment.......2005-06-27

Like the first DVD, this has been a huge hit in our household. My nearly-2-year-old adores it, and gets totally absorbed. We have 'Oh no!' with every crash (of which there are plenty!), and lots of additional sound effects ('toot toot!' etc).

There are many great things about this DVD. The episodes are about 5 minutes long; enough to hold a toddler's attention withut boredom setting in. The narration (Ringo Starr) is clear, and beautifully done. The animation is lovely.

What we don't like: The slightly awkward menu; you can choose one episode, or play all of them from the beginning. There is no option to start halfway through and play all episodes from there. the result is that the first 10 or so get watched a lot, and the rest get ignored.

Overall, its brilliant. No little Thomas fan should be without it (and no irritating American accents, either!)

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the first series.......2005-05-29

First shown in 1986, Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends bounced back with a second series after its equal success in 1984 when the show first started on television. Ringo Starr returns to the role of storyteller for the next twenty-six episodes filled with more disputes, acccidents and mishaps galore on this DVD.

There are more new characters in each story like Donald & Douglas the Scottish twins, Bill & Ben the twins who work at the China Clay works, Harold the Helicopter, Trevor the Traction Engine, Boco the Diesel, Duck the Great Western Engine, etc.

My favourite episodes on the disc are Break Van where Douglas is disliked by a nasty break van and Donald teaches him to show his twin a bit more respect, Thomas Comes to Breakfast where Thomas ends up popping through the Stationmaster's house one morning when his family are having breakfast, Percy's Predicament in which Percy has an accident thanks to some trucks who like to cause trouble and A Close Shave in which Duck crashes through yet another building, mainly a barber's and has his face smothered with shaving foam.

Well I mustn't give away any more details about the episodes because you won't want to watch them after reading this, enjoy the series and reminiscing about your childhood!

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic collection.......2005-05-27

The first Thomas DVD from the original series was a great hit with my son (nearly 2), and this second series is just as popular. Narrated by Ringo Starr, you don't have to put up with the irritating Americanisms of the later DVDs. The models are great and it makes superb viewing for any little fan.

There are 26 episodes, each around 5 minutes long, so this is very good value, and doesn't tax a toddler's concentration span too much either! The menu allows you to play straight through or choose an episode.

Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars misleading.......2007-01-08

The most recent adaption on this dvd is a decade old and the other two are twenty years old and personally i would wait for the fantastic new bbc jane eyre dvd which comes out in february.

3 out of 5 stars 3 for 1 - Bronte not Charlotte set.......2007-01-06

Firstly, Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre and her sister Anne wrote Wildfell Hall and Emily's lone work Wuthering Heights!
Secondly this is the Dalton version of Jane Eyre and the current Tara Fitzgerald/Toby Stephens version of Wildfell, Wuthering I'm not sure as haven't seen that one yet. So this set would be most useful if you were wanting those versions. I give it three because I was disapointed with Jane Eyre, and I quite like two other versions of Wuthering Heights (also new ones due out) - although I did think Wildfell despite itself being a decade old was done very well and still holds well. Please don't lump all these into Charlotte territory though, give true recognition to the other sisters where due!

5 out of 5 stars More T&J classics!.......2005-11-07

This cool collection features the cartoons from 'Tom And Jerry In The Hollywood Bowl' (1950) to Just Ducky (1953), encompassing 26 episodes including the Oscar-winning 'The Two Mouseketeers' (1951) and the end of an era as the black maid Mammy Two Shoes makes her swansong in 'Push-Button Kitty' (1952).

One cartoon that I was expecting to be heavily censored for implied racism (given that a bit of censorship had affected some of the cartoons on the previous two volumes) was 'His Mouse Friday', which features black cannibals and many scenes where Jerry disguises himself as one. This was actually more complete than the previous video version that I had seen, where the cannibal dialogue from Jerry and the cannibals was completely removed (but you could still see their mouths moving) in that version it has been restored in this (yet Mammy was still redubbed in 'Push-Button Kitty'!), although one small segment of 'His Mouse Friday' on this DVD has been reframed to put a little cannibal out of shot, which was a bit stupid as you could clearly see him just moments later!

Some great cartoons on here. Still no sign of the missing 'Million Dollar Cat' (which by rights should have appeared on Volume 1).

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to give you stomach-ache (through laughing)!.......2004-07-22

This DVD is a must for all true T&J fans. Every cartoon in this volume is from in my opinion the best period of the Fred Quimby era. Such gems as Cueball Cat & Fit To Be Tied are sheer genius, and are guaranteed to make the viewer laugh until it hurts - and then some more! All the favourite extra characters are in this compilation... the duckling, soldier ants, Toodles, Spike etc.

There isn't much in the way of extras on the DVD, and one rather irritating feature of all the volumes in this T&J DVD series is the fact they're double-sided which means you have to eject the disc & turn it over to see the remaining episodes. That said, the menu system is fairly intuitive and there isn't much in the way of legal mumbo-jumbo to wade through to get the the selection menu.

If you enjoy Tom & Jerry, just buy this volume - you won't regret it! I still give it 5 stars in spite of the gripes above.

The DVD contains the following T&J cartoons:-
Side A: T&J At The Hollywood Bowl, The Framed Cat, Cue Ball Cat, Casanova Cat, Jerry & The Goldfish, Jerry's Cousin, Sleepy-Time Tom, His Mouse Friday, Slicked-Up Pup, Nit-Witty Kitty, Cat-Napping, The Flying Cat, The Duck Doctor. Side B: The Two Mouseketeers, Smitten Kitten, Triplet Trouble, Little Runaway, Fit To Be Tied (my favourite), Push-Button Kitty, Cruise Cat, The Dog House, The Missing Mouse, Jerry & Jumbo, Johann Mouse, That's My Pup & Just Ducky.

5 out of 5 stars Drive-in Heaven.......2007-11-02

Ever wanted to be a character in Grease or Happy Days? Ever wished you could go to a drive-in movie like in the opening titles of The Flintstones but were prevented from doing so by not growing up in the fifties in some American backwater? Yearn no more! Buy this collection, set up the DVD player in the garden on a balmy summer's night and you're away...

These films are fantastic, in every sense of the word. They're not GREAT films, but their evocation of time and place is unsurpassed. Some have been remade but never bettered (The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers), some have been sung about in the Rocky Horror (Picture) Show (Tarantuala, It Came from Outer Space)...and the fifties wouldn't have been the fifties without The Creature from the Black Lagoon!

Pop that corn, make yourself an ice cream soda, sit back and enjoy...
