It keeps my two year old amused while I catch up on some much needed sleep...what more can I say?!
The classic show has finally arrived on DVD.......2005-05-29
It's great having all twenty-six stories from the first series because it saves a lot of space on your shelf, it's good value for money and plus there's over two hours of accidents, fun and mishaps on the Island of Sodor. My favourite stories are Coal, Troublesome Trucks, The Flying Kipper, Whistles and Sneezes, Off the Rails, and many more.
Even adults and younger children alike will adore watching Thomas adventures on DVD with a good sharp picture and clear sound to boot. I reccommend this to fans, whether they're young or old because it brought back happy memories for me and it'll probably do the same for you!
Thanks for taking time to read this, I hope you find it useful!
Absolutely Outstanding.......2005-03-29
On a different level of classic..........2005-03-27
This collection presents all 26 stories from the first classic series, all of which are adapted from the earlier volumes of the Railway Series. Made even more memorable by Ringo Starr's narration and the remarkable musical scores (I apologise for I cannot remember the composer's names!), these stories bring to life the Rly. Series in a way that stunned the world with awe. Where as more recent stories tend to focus on the importance of friendship and social skills, these classic tales deal with the comedy, sorrow, joys and tragedys of railway-life - which is exactly what Awdry wanted. Most of the stories that you see here are based on actual events that happened to one engine or another, somewhere in the world. For a taste of what it's REALLY all about - this DVD is essential for any fan, veteran or newly introduced.
Series 1 includes the world to the first seven engines of the main fleet, the concrete for the cast. Thomas, Edward, Gordon, Henry, James, Percy and Toby are established as family as time goes on, each with their own distinctive personalities. Thomas, who was at first cheeky, but grew wiser as time progressed. Edward, good-hearted and heart-moving. Proud Gordon, who's conceit often led to trouble. Henry, who's vainty and bad-health caused him many problems. James, flamboyant, rebellious and forever providing comic releif. Percy - baby-faced and adorable. Toby, quiet and sinless.
The Series begins with the memorable introduction of Thomas - flagship of The Railway Series and a landmark face in children's televison - followed by a comical incident in which he learns to hold back his cheekiness in the face of Gordon. Following this is an adaptation of the very first Rly. Series book - 'The Three Railway Engines' - which sees Gordon laughing on the other side of his smoke-box after taunting Edward, Henry's vanity leading to his temporary excile and all three brought together in harmony afterwards. We then see Thomas struggling with the reality of being station-pilot and his constant rebellion to escape from the small world he is confined too - and one memorable day in which a new-arrival called James has a terrible accident, Thomas' hard-work sees him rewarded with his very own branch line.
Following Thomas' 'escape' we see James brought into the spotlight - flamboyant, splendid and rebellious - who at first caused trouble for the Fat Controller, but then won back his honour not once, but twice. Whilst James establishes his place among the fleet, Thomas has some seperate adventures of his own on the branch line (with his coaches Annie and Clarabel, Terence the Tractor and Bertie the Bus).
Following this, the action turns darker. The loss of Thomas has caused upset and rebellion among the big engines, who go on strike after a string of humiliating events. Percy is drafted in as the new station-pilot, and after the peace is restored, the child-like new-comer realises the dangers of travelling on the main line with a free-mind. But Henry is still not happy, for we learn that his constant bad-health and lack of energy has put his career on the line. The problem is temporarily corrected by Welsh Coal, but disaster awaits Henry in the days that follow. By fate, an earth-shattering accident leads to a successful overhaul at Crewe, from which Henry emerges as a newer, stronger and happier engine.
After Henry teaches Gordon and some naughty school-boys a lesson, Thomas has some trouble with the police, which leads to the rescue of Toby the Tram Engine from retirement. In the light of Toby's arrival, James' conceit leads to a sticky accident. And after an ironic twist of pit-falls, Gordon and Thomas form an alliance of disgrace before all 7 friends are brought together in harmony for Christmas celebrations.
This DVD will bring tears of joy to veteran fans who remember the show in its youth, bringing back wonderful and charming memories. Newly introduced fans will see the further delights of the world of Sodor from the past - and hopefully come to appreciate the origins of this classic show even more.

Amazon.co.uk Review
The second DVD in the collector's edition series features classic cartoons capers from the world's most famous cat and mouse duo, taking us in chronological order up to the 1950s episode entitled 'Safety Second'. This collection also includes the famous Oscar-winning installment 'The Cat Concerto', which sees Tom and Jerry turn a concert performance of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody into a pitched battle on the piano.Customer Reviews:
Some more classic T&J, but still some annoying PC cuts.......2005-11-07
This collection also contains the memorable 'The Cat Concerto', which won an Oscar and few T&J fans could fail to remember the battle between Tom and Jerry as the latter intervened while the former was trying so hard to play Liszt's 'Hungarian Rhapsody' on the grand piano on a concert stage. This is a classic masterpiece!
That having been said, though, the other cartoons are also full of energy and still generate a laugh.
There are two things I have so far noticed that mar this collection. 'Solid Serenade' has a sound glitch near the end that is very noticeable and is a bit off-putting. The other is that, like the previous collection, some political correctness has affected some of the cartoons. In some of the cartoons, once again the black maid Mammy Two Shoes has had her voice redubbed to make her sound like a white woman (but in other cartoons, such as 'A Mouse In The House', the dear original maid's voice and drawl is present throughout!), and some bits that supposedly poke fun at black people have been cut: a black-face gag is cut from 'A Mouse In The House' and 'The Truce Hurts', 'Tennis Chumps' has a different take on one with a different pose, and -- possibly the most affected -- 'The Little Orphan' is heavily cut to remove the aftermath of what happens in a scene involving Tom and a candle, and again the continuity is affected so the scene no longer makes sense.
So, all in all, a great collection, once again kept from the 5/5 scoring by some cuts.
As good as it gets!.......2004-12-16
Volume 1 is equally good, while vol. 3 is great, but starts to trail off at the end due to poorer quality cartoons as production costs start getting cut. Volume 4 is absolutely horrible, dating from a time where production costs appear to have hit rock bottom, so don't even bother with vol. 5.
Get this without fear and re-live your childhood through some of the most imaginitive cartoon slapstick you'll ever find!
Probably the best of this series of dvds.......2004-10-20

Really lovely!.......2006-02-12
These little cartoons are really lovely. The screen is very calm, with spare drawings and very little background. I like the way the screen is usually all white and bare except for the important things - the characters and whatever they are using, like a window (but no wall) and a basket (but no room, save for a faint line marking where the floor might stop and the wall starts). It's very easy on the eyes, and so calm compared to most children's TV!
Martin Clunes is excellent - better than Neil Morrissey is in Bob or Maisy. His voice is very soothing but full of character and fun.
The characters are warm and funny without being twee or sickly, and the whole thing just exudes cosiness and fun, without being irritatingly wholesome. But it is very wholesome. And, it's fun for adults to watch too. I could watch this over and over again. Perfect for snuggling on the sofa on rainy Sunday mornings. Kipper gives you the warm fuzzies like the programmes from your own chidlhood.
This is a winner!

great toddler entertainment.......2005-06-27
There are many great things about this DVD. The episodes are about 5 minutes long; enough to hold a toddler's attention withut boredom setting in. The narration (Ringo Starr) is clear, and beautifully done. The animation is lovely.
What we don't like: The slightly awkward menu; you can choose one episode, or play all of them from the beginning. There is no option to start halfway through and play all episodes from there. the result is that the first 10 or so get watched a lot, and the rest get ignored.
Overall, its brilliant. No little Thomas fan should be without it (and no irritating American accents, either!)
Just as good as the first series.......2005-05-29
There are more new characters in each story like Donald & Douglas the Scottish twins, Bill & Ben the twins who work at the China Clay works, Harold the Helicopter, Trevor the Traction Engine, Boco the Diesel, Duck the Great Western Engine, etc.
My favourite episodes on the disc are Break Van where Douglas is disliked by a nasty break van and Donald teaches him to show his twin a bit more respect, Thomas Comes to Breakfast where Thomas ends up popping through the Stationmaster's house one morning when his family are having breakfast, Percy's Predicament in which Percy has an accident thanks to some trucks who like to cause trouble and A Close Shave in which Duck crashes through yet another building, mainly a barber's and has his face smothered with shaving foam.
Well I mustn't give away any more details about the episodes because you won't want to watch them after reading this, enjoy the series and reminiscing about your childhood!
Another fantastic collection.......2005-05-27
There are 26 episodes, each around 5 minutes long, so this is very good value, and doesn't tax a toddler's concentration span too much either! The menu allows you to play straight through or choose an episode.
Highly recommended!

More T&J classics!.......2005-11-07
One cartoon that I was expecting to be heavily censored for implied racism (given that a bit of censorship had affected some of the cartoons on the previous two volumes) was 'His Mouse Friday', which features black cannibals and many scenes where Jerry disguises himself as one. This was actually more complete than the previous video version that I had seen, where the cannibal dialogue from Jerry and the cannibals was completely removed (but you could still see their mouths moving) in that version it has been restored in this (yet Mammy was still redubbed in 'Push-Button Kitty'!), although one small segment of 'His Mouse Friday' on this DVD has been reframed to put a little cannibal out of shot, which was a bit stupid as you could clearly see him just moments later!
Some great cartoons on here. Still no sign of the missing 'Million Dollar Cat' (which by rights should have appeared on Volume 1).
Guaranteed to give you stomach-ache (through laughing)!.......2004-07-22
There isn't much in the way of extras on the DVD, and one rather irritating feature of all the volumes in this T&J DVD series is the fact they're double-sided which means you have to eject the disc & turn it over to see the remaining episodes. That said, the menu system is fairly intuitive and there isn't much in the way of legal mumbo-jumbo to wade through to get the the selection menu.
If you enjoy Tom & Jerry, just buy this volume - you won't regret it! I still give it 5 stars in spite of the gripes above.
The DVD contains the following T&J cartoons:-
Side A: T&J At The Hollywood Bowl, The Framed Cat, Cue Ball Cat, Casanova Cat, Jerry & The Goldfish, Jerry's Cousin, Sleepy-Time Tom, His Mouse Friday, Slicked-Up Pup, Nit-Witty Kitty, Cat-Napping, The Flying Cat, The Duck Doctor. Side B: The Two Mouseketeers, Smitten Kitten, Triplet Trouble, Little Runaway, Fit To Be Tied (my favourite), Push-Button Kitty, Cruise Cat, The Dog House, The Missing Mouse, Jerry & Jumbo, Johann Mouse, That's My Pup & Just Ducky.
