Dreadful .......2008-02-22
How and why Elvis agreed to do awful movies such as this will remain a mystery. The King reduced to B grade musicals. It is difficult to believe that this is the same genius who performed all those electrifying Sun tracks, and even harder to believe this is the same superstar on stage in the 1970s. Tragic. We can thank 'Colonel' Tom Parker for those silly movies.
As for the film itself - horrible plot, awful songs, terrible acting, and the DVD is of poor viewing quality. If you want to watch some good Presley movies, try the first six he made.
2 stars instead of 1 because Elvis tried his best.
Enough said.
Don't Avoid This One.......2003-10-29
Clambake is not, as I have read elsewhere, Elvis's worst movie. Actually, it is really rather good. Supposedly he was having a tough time personally during the making of this but actually he must have been a good actor because you wouldn't know it.
Elvis is the son of an oil baron who decides to switch identities with a water ski instructor he meets and tries to find true love. Sounds hokey but is quite funny. There is a good supporting cast, Shelly Fabares and Bill Bixby are on form and the songs are not the worst although Confidence is cringe-worthy but then there has to be at least one turkey in every Elvis movie in the 60s.
Elvis looks a bit chunky but we can let that pass. The sets are not half bad and the script is quite good.
There are plenty of laughs in this one. And, of course, Elvis is fighting to win the heart of the fair maiden. Will he win - you just have to watch and see!!
I would recommend this as one of his better late 60s efforts. Light-hearted and easy to watch.
A great duet.......2003-07-21
In Clambake Elvis switches identity with a motorcyclist to hide the fact that he is an oil baron's son because any girl who falls in love with him will love him for himself rather than the "oil". He is the perfect son and he looked good. He befriended the owner of a boat company who never had his own son and agrees to share the prize money with Elvis if he wins the race. But did he find his true love or a gold digger?
In Frankie & Johnny Elvis is the compulsive gambler. He was on a losing streak and on the advice from a gypsy fortune teller he swapped his blonde sweetheart for a red head for luck on the roulette table. Trying to woo his true love back he sang that beautiful ballad "Please dont stop loving me". She was not convinced and in a crime of passion she shot him.
