Weak songs weak singing voices, weak acting and pretty much no clear story line.
That sums it up , I guess.
Oh...It's too long too.
Worst however and quite unforgivable in my book, this film completely lacks any respect for , and possibly even understanding of the attempted subject matter( s) .
It's surface, and at the surface it stays.
All lahlahlah and blahblah.
Have those who made this, ever actually thaught about their characters?
If so, they are certainly not telling the audience much .
I had heard many reviews on it and would never have expected something THIS bad.
I kept on thinking..." it looks like what we used to stage in school", only we never got paid for it, and rightfully so.
An insult to any audience.
...Did I mention the bad acting, singing songs and lack of any convincing characters or any characters at all?
I gave it a star because I had to.

I saw the play almost a decade ago now!!! and loved it. when i saw the dvd was coming out i was at the store the day of release to buy it. have watched it any number of times since buying. over all i'd say this is 1 excellent movie, the only 2 things i'd change wud b putting the full version of Goodbye love in the main feature rather than the extras and using the alternate version of the ending as i think that has a much more powerful emotional impact, just as that scene in the stage version did. even if i just watch the alternate ending in the extras i start to well up with emotion.

I've seen the stage version 5 or 6 times in various countries and became hooked on the energy and psssion of this production. It's not often we see stage musicals brought to celluloid with great success, but here they have nailed the crossover with ease.
In doing so, there comes a few subtle differences such as a little more spoken word where words were sung on the stage, but some of the more nioticeable differences were in such scenes as the openeing theme "Rent" where the director could cut loose from the towering fire escpes with hundreds of people in the streets below. Also, the fabulous "La Vie Boheme" scene in the Life Cafe featured some clever camera work, where the viewer almost feels "on the table" with the actors, something not possible on the stage. Also the end-on aspect gives a new feel to this scene. The quite exquisite scene of "Tango Maureen" was masterful and again, something not possible to do in such scale on Broadway.
However in praising the production so much, I had a few small negatives. Some of the performances lacked that killer edge to the vocals as heard in the original cast recording, for instance in Mimi's "Out Tonight", which fell flat in comparison. A small negative which did not take away from the whole experience.
Buy it, watch it, get swept away again and again. It's on DVD at last!

I have sat in the uk and waited just about 2 years for this movie to finally be released, only to find that the only place i could see it was about 100 or so miles away.....however me and quite a few of my friends went to see it and were absolutely blown away...we all thought it was one of the best if not THE best movie we had ever seen...i was with the latter choice...this movie is incredible and i think critics have got it ALL wrong...the dvd can only be better with 'Goodbye Love' & 'Halloween' among the special features (2 GREAT songs by the way)....Final Comment...YOU WOULD BE MAD TO NOT BUY THIS DVD!!!

I was lucky enough to see the stage show on the penultimate night of its run in London then a couple of years later when it came back for a limited run.
Disappointed that it had finished in the UK I was very excited to see the film available on my flight from Hong Kong to Auckland last month!!
I sat back and watched the movie, finding myself reliving the passion of the original stage production in a superb movie production.
I caught my breath, and waited for it to start again and watched it a second time back to back.
Having returned home to the UK the first DVD I purchased was...yep...RENT. I have sat here watching it this evening as if it were the first time. As i write I am watching it yet again with the actor's commentary, a great insight as to how this came to be.
This production benefits from the fact that most of the cast are the original members of the Broadway Show. A modern day reworking of La Boheme, set in the back streets of New York where people deal with life on the breadline, social issues such as Sexuality, HIV & homelessness. The storyline is superb, the music a masterpiece and the acting believable!!
If you don't buy it RENT it!!
