typically sondheim.......2004-05-12
that means good! It is grand, amazing and fantastic, but if you are anything like me, most sondheim needs to be listened to or watched a few times to really appreciate. Sunday in the Park with George is visually amazing. It has some beautiful songs (Finishing the Hat springs to mind) and Mandy Patinkin is simply superb. This is a first rate, top notch, high class production that is a gerat addition to anyones musicals collection
IT MAKES A CONNECTION.......2002-04-13
I thought this dvd was wonderful, the singing and acting of an extremely high standard and of course with the exceptional music and lyric by my faviourate composer; Stephen Sondheim. The commentry was quite humorous and lovely to look back on the production from later on. It may seen unusual and it's non-linear approach might put you off, but to any devoted Sondheim fan it's a must see. ;o)
It's all Colour and Light!.......2002-03-06
Right! First of all remember this is a very old filming of the show so be prepared for bits of wonky music and occasionaly poor images. Secondly remember this is a broadway Sondheim show so its very american and very difficult to get into unlike some of his more accesible shows however this is a beautiful show. The entire cast are very good especially Bernadette Peters Mandy Patinkin and Babara Bryne. The staging for its era is very clever and pretty. The songs are very hard to immediatly like but give them time (buy the CD first is my advice)The story has many messages and is well written.
So if you're prepared to give this beautiful musical time and to overlook its age related faults then get ready to Move On down to a rather plaesant experiance called Sunday in the Park with George.
Artistic, clever, original.......Unmissable!.......2001-02-04
As a sondheim fan i could not pass up the chance of purchasing one of his most famouse shows on video. and now having seen it.....i wasn't disapointed. for a sondheim it is very romantic almost, it moves teadily but gracefully, it isn't as fast paced as into the Woods and Sweeney Todd, it is much slower and softer. So much light and shade is used in the music it compliments the whole purpose and context as well as the set and costumes. The performances are wonderful sith a large handful of sonheim interpreters working together again forming this incredable piece of art imitating art. The performances from Bernadett peters is as usual wonderful and msmerising, as well is the performance given by the talented Mandy Pantinkin. The show is full of so much emotion it is almost hypnotic and hard if not impossible to switch off. This is also a wondefull video in respect of it's technical achievments. The set is beutifully recreated from the "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" painting. the costumes are lovelly, and the lighting is spectacular, especially the lazer dispaly in the second act. The stage effects are wonderful not least when Peters dress opens up on it's own and she dances out of it! The changes of old and modern are done very seemlessly and beleivably and easy to follow. This is such a good show....buy it today!
