Weak Elvis Presley Vehicle.......2008-01-08

I've given this movie two stars rather than one for daring to offer an alternative to The King's deplorable beach/boy racer movies. 'Stay Away, Joe' is surely in a genre of its own, ie, a comedy that begins with a plaintive harmonica instrumental to depress the viewer even before the lame gags begin. Elvis is actually okay but the characters, story and jokes are poor. One drole one-liner ("You got lots of guts, lady") does not an hilarious comedy make. I had heard that there were many amateurish continuity errors in the rodeo scenes, yet was still taken aback at how painfully conspicuous they are. The music could be worse - 'Stay Away' is a melodic take on 'Greensleeves' but is let down by an awkward repeated hook line. 'All I Needed Was the Rain' has the basis of a decent blues but its frivolous use in a gallows humour scene prevents it being developed to its potential. That this movie was filmed in the same year as Elvis's brilliant 1968 comeback tv special serves as a microcosm of all that was wrong with his career.

this is so bad. As a huge fan of everything elvis, including every other film he ever made, even i have to draw a line somewhere. This film has no plot (fair enough?) it also has no good jokes, no real quality songs (except the theme song), elvis is supposed to be an indian? huh? even the elvis "babe" is scary as hell. I watched this the other day and couldn't work out what was going on.

Stay Away Joe is a funny film; Elvis is excellent as wild Navajo indian Joe Lightcloud.

Joe is home with a herd of cattle and a government scheme that will finally see him make some big money.

Supported by Katie Jurado and Burgess Meredith, (Mickey from the Rocky films) Stay Away Joe is a wild ride of parties, boozing, women and hustling.

Most of the film is very funny, a few songs are thrown in; but the basic story is about Joe, his wild ways and the problems he encounters when the prize bull is barbecued during a party.

The problem is, that they are government bulls and he has no money to buy a new bull.

It's hillarious when he continually has to sell parts of his brand new red cadillac, eventually with no roof, doors or seats; he is driving the car whilsts sitting on a rocking chair.

This film is under-rated and is definately one of his best; it was filmed in the Arizona desert with great scenery, Elvis looking great and obviously having a great time.....you will too!
