Directed by India's master storyteller Raj Kapoor, 1973's Bobby signalled the end of an era of action and patriotic-themed films and the entrance of romance into Bollywood. With its unforgettable songs, vibrant imagery and powerfully sensitive handling of the story, it set a precedent for all subsequent love stories in Indian Cinema, and also marked the debut of celebrated actress Dimple Kapadia who, with her innocent looks and daring outfits, stole the hearts of Indian men.
Bobby is the story of Raj (Rishi Kapoor), the poor little rich boy who has everything but the love and attention he craves, and Bobby (Dimple Kapadia), the granddaughter of his old maid in whom he finds love and support. Interwoven with this innocent love story are the very real issues of modern India's social and class inequalities as the film explores the theme of relationships versus wealth. The two sets of parents, with their social and financial differences, make it impossible for the young lovers to be together. What follows is a touching tale of how the pair fights society and their parents, proving that love does conquer all and that a big bank balance does not automatically provide respectability.
On the DVD: Bobby on disc is presented in Hindi with English subtitles. Sound is remastered 5.1 Dolby Digital. The special features include excerpts from recent Yashraj Film classics such as Mohabbatein and Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge. --Anika Puri

Love conquers all!.......2001-04-05
A poor little rich boy is befriended by a fisherman's daughter, only to fall in love with her, thereby challenging the status-quo of asian society. Little has changed with regards to an age old formula, however the package is continuously modified. This is the '72 version which, if not timeless is still a classic!

I am a great fan of BD and honestly this is the best collection from his live performances back in 1973, just before he died. More than 20 tracks included, my favourites are "come rain or come shine" , "mame" , "cry me a river" , artificial flowers" , "work song" , "beyond the sea"

Forget the PC Problems and Laugh Till You Cry.......2007-02-08
This is so politically incorrect it's almost embarrasing. A gangster movie then, now you'd struggle to make something funnier. The lighting, acting, sets and clothes all creak, the plot moves like lightning and people die with a combination of senseless over-acting and low grade tomato sauce splashing about. And - probably since they could - there's the odd bit of gratuitious sex that contributes almost nothing to the story. I rewound one scene where black gangsters emerge from the sea and take over an island owned by white mafia to watch it three times. Beats me how a handful of people on open ground can avoid being hit by many more people in well covered positions....but it's that kind of film.
