Customer Reviews:
Utterly Brilliant.......2005-05-01
This is a wonderful piece of concert theatre. Everyone is on good form and seem almost determined to outdo each other.
Julie Andrews doesn't sing, but still looks and sounds amazing (though she does need to have words with her costume designer).
The true revelation is Linda Eder, who'd been 'bubbling under' before now and finally achieved the complete star status she deserved. Her rendition of Man of La Mancha is amazing - just listen to that note she comes up with near the end, and all whilst looking like it's a stroll in the park for her.
Other highlights include Rebecca Luker, Marin Mazzie, Judy Kuhn, Dorothy Loudon's heartbreaking 'Fifty Percent', Debra Monk's hilariously raunchy 'Everybody's Girl' and the party pieces by Faith Prince (Adelaide's Lament) and Elaine Stritch (Ladies Who Lunch (what else!))
Bebe Neuwirth appears in 'Nowadays' from Chicago, but though she's fabulous, she's almost outsung and outdanced by Karen Ziemba. Jennifer Holliday reprises 'And I Am Telling You' from 'Dreamgirls' and just makes you wonder whether she has extra sets of lungs installed. You'll either love it or hate it, but you couldn't fail to be impressed.
The only downsides for me were Nell Carter who gets two songs and a quick press of the fast forward switch, and Liza Minnelli who tries to do a rendition of 'Some People' but isn't up to it. It's passable and she does that thing she does now where she knows she doesn't have the amazing voice she used to, but gets by anyway. Somehow though she needs to just calm down a bit. She could have got away with the song if she'd toned down the histrionics.
A brilliant DVD though and well worth it for anyone who's into their show tunes!
One question - why are these women not ALL household names and huge stars? To a one they have better voices and stage presence than most of the pop divas we're presented with and yet most people haven't heard of them.
This is a must course.......2003-07-29
Leading ladies... Wow... Starting with two very beautiful ladies, seeing how they act and sing, at the very beginning of the show, you've come the point: thanks god, I'll enjoy through the show. And that is true. For more than 1 hour, I wasn't once bored; well ok, for some time. But the whole idea is superb. Then coming the "Chicago-Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag" performance in duet with a "real" musical actress Bebe... Amazing... And continuosly songs are sung as you enjoy and be happier with each and every piece is performed. Julie Andrews as the host of the night is very successful. Her speaking, her face, her everything is a piece of art.
There is a "Andrew Lloyd Weber" trio singing three different songs from 3 different musicals in the same armoni. Quiet enjoyable and successful.
Then Liza comes. Sings "Some People" from "Gypsy" with a very little prologue. Extraordinary... Terrific... The energy comes out of the screen, gets inside of you, takes you whole and shakes and shakes... As the song ends, you find yourself rewinding the track.
Well well... A great performance DVD you can buy for its price. You enjoy very much and also learn how can people be real artists. They are beautiful, they act and sing great... What else an artist needs? Watching all those great performers and real artists, you really will have something to say to the youngsters.
Sensational.......2003-01-25
This is an evening of sensational performances by a series of Broadway Divas. Linda Eder performs a definitive "Man of La Mancha", the fabulous Dorothy Loudon tears at the heartstrings with her 11 o'clock song from "Ballroom", Jennifer Holliday, the original star of "Dreamgirls", performs a powerhouse version of "I'm not Goin'", Elaine Stritch gives her legendary "Broadway Baby" and the great Karen Ziemba does fantastic routines with both Bebe Neuwirth and the Radio City Rockettes.
Highly recommended to any and all Broadway lovers
A top tribute to todays Broadway Divas!!!.......2000-11-15
This show, filmed live at Carnegie Hall plays tribute to todays leading ladies. Although there are established performers such as Liza Minelli and Julie Andrews, it is the up and coming and lesser known starlets who steal the limelight. An imaginative selection of songs from composers such as Kander & Ebb, Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim sit perfectly together. Watch out for Jennifer Holliday singing "And Im telling You" and Karen Ziemba's solo turn in "I wanna be a rockette" This is a must for anybody with a passion for musical theatre.
