4 out of 5 stars Spot the mistakes.......2006-12-24

To say that Neil Aspinall was musical director sounds like a joke when you consider we hear music which was at least 3 years away from the period the movie is supposed to be set in-1959.The soundtrack album carried on with it as well!I mean Brian Hyland had just about cut his first single!
Possibly this is Ringo Starr's finest movie appearance-the rest of his output was either cameo roles or just plain stupid ones.
However the main problem with the movie is the SEQUEL-suddenly he grows a London accent and becomes Adam Faith! Though Adam played a good role you would have thought there were plenty of actors in Liverpool if Ringo didn't want to do another film with David Essex.
Stardust though-something of a ridiculous title as it inspired a single by Essex called Stardust-the famous 30s song which Ringo actually recorded on his first album-was quite a powerful story but to go further into it would maybe be a spoiler.
Get the double pack and enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Onn of my all time favorites.......2004-01-15

I'll admit coming to this double pack that Staardust has always been my least favorite of the 2 films here. Adn nothing in rewatching this has changed that opinion.

That'll Be The Day tells the story of Jim Maclaine from his farther return from the war and subsequently abandoning his family throght to MacLaine abndoning his own. It is a great well paced story.

Stardust picks up a while latter when MacLaine is now starting out in the world of rock and roll and charts his rise and subsequent downfall. Whilst a great film it doesn't match the standard set by That'll Be The Day and I admit I've always found the last 20 minutes slightly disjointed.

The DVD itself offers no special features but the you do get both movies, personally that suits me rather than having to pay for 2 DVD's with 'dodgy' extras. My one critiscim is that the sound quality is not great

5 out of 5 stars That'll Be the Day/Stardust - Rock On!.......2003-08-31

An excellent double bill, though be mindful of the 15 cert - it portrays the groupie lifestyle in some detail! That'll be the Day captures the feel of the 50's and 60's perfectly and David Essex plays the part of Jim Maclaine very well - though he does gradually turn into 'David Essex' as the film moves on. Great cameos from Ringo Starr, Rory Storm, Keith Moon and others give this film a real authenticity - and the music's great.

Stardust portrays sex drugs and rock'n'roll to excess with great performances from Essex and Adam Faith replacing Ringo as his sidekick (Starr apparently turned it down as it was too reminiscent of his own spell in a well known group in the sixties!). Great original music produced by Dave Edmunds who also appears with, again, cameos from Keith Moon, Paul Nicholas and, erm, Peter Duncan. Larry Hagman puts in a great pre-JR performance as a very convincing manipulative manager.

Overall a great three hours of nostalgia, fun and great music. Buy it!!
