Need to read the comics first........2005-05-08

Vampire Hunter D is a classic example of Manga at it's best. Trust me... having read some of the Vampire Hunter D comics I can say that this is a perfect transaction between paper and viewing screen. Sure the animation is a little ropey but then again this was made in 1985 so hey.

The story is your average vampire hunter story.
Count Magnus Lee, a 5000 year old vampire needs another human wife so he places the bite on Doris Lang, a young village girl who wears the shortest miniskirt in existance.

Doris thus hires a lone vampire hunter known as D to protect her and slay Count Magnus Lee.

So it's you're same old Lone Vampire Hunter saves hapless girl story... nothing too special. The voice acting is pretty good and the sounds are Okeydokey as well. The thing is... if you haven't read the comics before then you're in for a rough time.

For one thing, D's left hand is a parasite that has unique powers. If you've read the comics then you'll know all about 'Left Hand' but if you haven't then you won't know what the heck is going on. Honestly, before I read the comics I thought that D had a talking sword.

Second, the story takes place after a cataclysmic war. What was this war, how did vampires come into existance? And there are other things that will puzzle newcomers as well.

Finally, the 15 certificate is very softgoing. There are some pretty gory bits in here including a monster getting sliced in half, a human who's head implodes and a little bit of nudity as well. So if you're not a fan of the old red stuff then maybe you should avoid this because there is buckets of blood. However this isn't a bloodbath slash flick.

It's wierd but the blood goes hand in hand with the scene. It shows what a horrible world that the humans live in and how horrible the vampires are. So at least it's got purpose...

To sum it up, Vampire Hunter D is good. Very good infact. If you have read the comics then add an extra 2 stars to my rating and be amazed. Watch it, like it and watch it again.

If you like this then I recommend Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and all Devilman OVA's. Enjoy.

Classic.......2004-03-30

VHD is a classic anime film. Yes, the animation is weak and does not compare to something like Ninja scroll. But, it is 11 years old and has more than enough plot to make up for the animation. D is an immortal bad-ass that all guys can root for and this is a definite must buy.

When a village girl called Doris Lang is attacked by an evil count called Magnus Lee she hires the services of a vampire hunter called D to solve the problem. But as D discovers, he's got his work cut out for him, having to protect Doris and her brother Dan from the clutches of the ruthless and powerful count.
This story involves a lot of violence, bloodshed and gore which is quite surprising for a 15-rated film, but it's still very entertaining.
If you like Manga for its animated horror films then this is definitely for you. Recommended!!!!!!

less than meets the eye.......2002-10-04

i felt a little shocked after watching this film, because it was pants quite frankly. i just didnt think the animation gave the stortline justice, plus the fight secnes are boring and very abreviated. dont buy this film if you love anime you'll be put off, and it is no way near as good as akira (dweeb).

This flick rocks, ok, the animation at times can be dodgy but nothings perfect. The storyline, script and over all style is amazing, the story flows well and at a fast rate. I enjoyed this film more then akira, go on; buy it.

This is one of the most emotional films I have ever seen. I was blown away by the deep involvement of the characters. Basically, it is about the changing relationship between two brothers as they choose their very different paths in life. The accompanying soundtrack (and poster..was on my wall for years after the film's release in 1985 and which I still have) is very 80's and if listened to after having watched the film, takes you right back there. It is about time Wisdom was released on DVD. Another of my favourites.

This film is awesome, it totally takes me back to my school days when all our friends (in London UK) would gather round the TV and watch bratt Pack movies together back in the 80's.

Another movie of this calliber (if not better) is WISDOM with Emilio and Demi Moore (his fiance at the time). Emilio's first ever attempt at writing and directing a movie - I advise anyone reading this to get WISDOM out on video. The soundtrack is awesome (Danny Elfman) but W H E N O H W H EN will wisdom come out on DVD ? Mr Estevez, if your out there - release it and do a directors talk over with Demi...pleeeeease ?
