If you have children who like the Famous Five, OR like Jon Lee of S Club 7, OR like musicals... you can't go wrong with this. This was Jon Lee just before he became part of S Club. It's a simple Blyton mystery, with very good performances from the four main child actors, & good music/songs. It's filmed in a live theatre setting, so you get audience reaction & the feel of watching it as a theatre event. I bought it for my daughter the day before she started primary school to take her mind off it - 8 years on and she still watches it occasionally! It's always been one of her favourites and it's hard to see what anyone could find not to enjoy about it. Good story, good music, no swearing, no sex, no violence. Go on - watch it. You know you want to. And in true Blyton fashion, have ginger beer and buns while you do.

I bought this on a whim and my kids 7 and 5 absolutely adore it and know all the songs off by heart. The acting, especially by the girl playing George, is super. Really really cannot rate this highly enough. Only a shame that it's a one off!

Filmed from the stage production in Woking in 1997, Famous Five, Smuggler's Gold isn't based on one actual Enid Blyton story but brings together elements from many.

Featuring a pre-S Club Jon Lee as Julian, the children go to visit George in the West Country.

Whilst the plot is made-up, the ending may disappoint, as the five are rescued from their scrape by adult intervention rather than a typical Enid Blyton ending of the Five "saving the day".

A story that is well acted and competently staged should be a real draw, but I found the songs dull and dreary, perhaps because the narrative is action based rather than emotional. Leaving the cast to sing about, well, I can't remember. Travelling on a train?

This is a DVD taken from a live recording of the 'Smuggler's Gold' musical stage show. As such the action is naturally very 'stage bound', but picture quality and sound are quite good. The musical is based on Enid Blyton`s classic books (but not any book in particular) and "this unique musical production was filmed during its smash nationwide tour". This DVD lasts about 80 minutes and is rated U.

This musical was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Enid Blyton's birth (~1995). Starring Elizabeth Marsland, Lyndon Ogbourne, Matthew Johnson, and Vicky Taylor, it also features Jon Lee as Julian (b. 26 April 1982), a busy child actor (e.g. schoolboy Josh in East-Enders) who joined S Club 7 in 1999.

My kids (girl 11, boy 9) have happily watched this DVD six or seven times, and that's more than they watch many other children's DVD films - except perhaps their 'The worst Witch' and 'Jimmy Neutron' DVDs. They say they like the story and songs. The villains are a bit panto, and the storyline is more sympathetic with the famous five books than a book adaptation. It's nicely acted and sung throughout by all. I wouldn't recommend it to any adult fan, as it seems aimed directly at pre-teens, but at a fiver it seems well worth money for Famous Five kid fans who like a bit of pantomime, particularly as the excellent 1970s and 1990s Famous Five TV series never made it to release on DVD.
