    Amazon.co.uk Review

Martin Scorsese took a daring turn from the mean streets that made his reputation in the early 70s with New York, New York, his homage to the big-band era. And what a homage it is: the dazzling production design by Boris Leven continues to impress over the film's nearly three-hour length. And there's no denying the anthemic appeal of Kander and Ebb's title song, belted with winning bravado by costar Liza Minnelli in a show-stopping finale. But as valiantly as Minnelli and Robert De Niro try, they can't elevate the shaky plot beyond its two-dimensional construct. It purports to be a Star Is Born-like tragedy of colliding careers but too often it feels like inadvertently eavesdropping on a marriage counsellor's most truculent clients. (There are times you want someone--anyone--to slap Minnelli upside the head with a copy of Women WhoLove Too Much.) The film is for diehard Minnelli (or Scorsese) fans only. --Anne Hurley

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful picture........2007-09-19

      Hello,
The first time I saw this movie was when i was 14. I was completely fascinated with everything in it - "The laughter, the tears, the Jazz, the Blues; everything that makes New York, New York".
At the age of 14 i was still training to become a classical pianist, so there was already the musical side of me undergoing a development. However, the movie (the memories of the movie and the strong impression of it) stayed with me forever.
Look, Martin Scorsese loves his city; New York is not just another city for him; he loves it! This movie encompasses all the selected good stuff from the jazz scene that has created the image of New York. Quite skilfully a parallel is drawn between big bands and individuals who would play somewhere in dark and smoky clubs, showing the true art of Jazz.
Some people think Liza Minnelli is too sentimental in the movie and too much in love, but in my personal opinion she did a good job for this particular movie keeping everything in a bound context.
De Niro plays the sax. Have a listen to his solos and see his musical side of an actor. Everyone is used to see him a gangster in movies; so here's a different De Niro.
The movie is very beautiful, especially if you like jazz. Some of the things in the movie are exaggeratedly beautiful and sentimental, but hey, remember Scorsese loves his city very much.
I live in London, haven't been in New York yet. New Yorkers who have lived in New York, felt the life in New York at its true core, might have different emotions and consequently opinion while watching this movie.
But the picture - stand alone - is a great piece of art.

Watch this movie. Don't wanna buy it, borrow from a friend and watch it!
      I'd recommend anyone anytime.

4 out of 5 stars New York, New York.......2003-05-04

After owning every other Scorsese/DeNiro colaberation i was in for a long hunt trying to find this rare film to complete my collection. But that was the only reason really why I wanted it because over the years I had heard nothing really positive about it. then I got it and was totally surprised as it wasn't the rubbish disaster that I was expecting. The performances as you'd expect were great...the direction superb. The only parts I didn't like was when they would brake into a song but, thats only because of the fact that I dislike musicals! overall I liked itand think it's a must for any fan.
