Essential Paradise Lost.......2003-04-13
Paradise Lost are a band I've always managed to miss out on seeing, and I've only seen a couple of live performances courtesy of MTV (thank you, Headbangers Ball).
Thankfully, this DVD is enough to satisfy my curiosity. It's a live slog through an amazing back-catalogue of classic tunes spanning Paradise Lost's 1992 - 1998 era, with promotional music videos and home movies thrown in too.
The Stuttgart performance from 1993 is very nostalgic, reminding you of that time in the history of rock/metal. It's also oddly hilarious seeing the band's transition over the years - all that long hair in the early days, and then the short, sharp, classy look from 1998's Shepherd's Bush Empire gig promoting One Second. Both performances are great to watch (there's not many better solos than in Widow, and watching it live is breathtaking), especially the newer material, such as Say Just Words, One Second and Soul Courageous. All the promo vids are here in all their glory, and the snippets of PL in the studio and bumming around complete the package (home movie footage is an essential addition to music DVDs!).
The DVD itself is presented very neatly and is easy to navigate. Nice and easy chapter choices ensure you get to where you want quickly. In a way it's just such a shame they released this when they did - because live footage of material from Host would have been absolutely amazing. But, as it is, it's a must for any PL fan.
I guess I just have to wait for their next release to see live footage of tracks like So Much is Lost, In All Honesty, It's Too Late and Behind the Grey...
