HOT HOT HOT!!.......2004-07-26
This film is absolutely HOT!! The film is so full of erotic tension, even when there's 'nothing actually happening' (!). For that, the erotic appeal, I give it 5 stars, even though the story gets a bit unsatisfactory towards the end. It feels like it was originally different and some essential scenes were cut. But I can't say much more without giving too much away. I love the very ending, though! Calls for a sequel, really, which unfortunately never happened. I would have loved to see Robert Patrick in more steamy action... So, if you want to see two very good-looking people involved in loads of hot situations and talking - this is a film to get. Might be that the story is a bit confused - but who cares??? It's certainly not boring!

Rib tickling family humour with a touch of heart........2001-03-26
After my young son watched this film twice in one day I decided to watch with him, at the third showing!. `Dennis` is so typical of all children at that age, and I could see what my son found so amusing as he would tend to do the same things given half the chance. Having a bad guy also helped to keep the story going. For us adults though, Walter Matthau proves to be a real comic genius. Think of `Home Alone` but without Macaulay Culkin, thank goodness!.

Too good ever to forget.......2007-03-18
I saw this film when it came out in the 80's and have never forgotten it. It has a lovely blend of nostalgia, snobbery and of course the triumph of love. You really should see this!
Amazon.co.uk Review
Here's a movie that only a Steven Seagal fan could love. Fire Down Below is not nearly as good as Under Siege (the movie destined to remain Seagal's high-water mark), but not any worse than Above the Law. This time ol' Steve is an agent of the Environmental Protection Agency who's busting heads in Kentucky. He's on good terms with the local yokels (including Marg Helgenberger and Harry Dean Stanton), but locks horns with a slimy mogul (Kris Kristofferson) who's using abandoned mines to dump toxic waste. Along with an ecological message, Seagal serves up several broken limbs, cracked skulls, and bloody noses, and he even finds time to do some guitar picking with country boys such as Travis Tritt and Randy Travis. Once you've heard Seagal crooning a country tune, you'll be eager to see him go back to whuppin' the bad guys. --Jeff Shannon

A SEAGAL FILM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.......2007-02-06
I watched this last night in bed and was expecting a normal STEVEN SEAGAL film with plenty of action and a thin plot but this was the opposite - plenty of plot and not enough action. FIRE DOWN BELOW could of been rated a 15 and not an 18.
The story is: In the peaceful Appleachian hills of Jackson, Kentucky, the Earth burns. The toxins being dumped into abandoned mines could turn Jackson into a wasteland if no one stops it. EPA Marshal Jack Taggart will.
Steven Seagal is Taggart - his job is to ferret out those responsible for poisoning the land and when thugs try to take him out Seagal takes on another job (yes the job he is well known for - kicking people's heads in) but... there isn't enough of it and that's what people want to watch a Seagal film for.
But as things go this isn't a bad film but not one of his best (I guess this is where his career started going down hill into straight to dvd films).
So my final word is enjoy this for what it is and you won't be disappointed but just don't hype it up to be something it's not.
Tank you for reading my review.
seagal at his passion again.......2004-10-01
yes seagal doing another passionate movie like oon deadly ground only this time its actually good.for a movie about the enviroment there is a lot of action in it but dont expect a lot of voilence like nico, marked for death, out for justice.but you can expect a very enjoyable movie.i own all of seagals movies and i do mean all of them from [nico-out of reach]and this is by far not his best but take it for what it is and youll love it
One of Seagal's best.......2002-02-12
This is possibly the one Steven seagal movie I never tire of watching. Criticised by some for his eco-beliefs Seagal is at his best as an undercover EPA sent to investigate the death of his friend in a US backwater. Good action sequences and lot of humour make this a must-see film. Also touching is his relationship with the town outcast, Sarah. Kris Kristofferson gives a good performance as the dodgy businessman but it's Seagal who shines. Definately his best film since Under Siege.
Too Much Eco Too Little Action.......2001-01-05
As a fan of Steven Seagal, I rushed out to buy it. But having watched it I wonder why I bothered. Seagal plays an EPA Marshal out to stop Kris Kristofferson poisoning the land.
Unfortunately it has been done before and better in On Deadly Ground and this time Michael Cain is not there to give movie a kick.
Die hard Seagal fans will enjoy seeing him again, but that's about the only plus point for this film.

Paradise Alley - Great Film.......2005-03-23
I once had this film taped from the TV. It had different music and sceenes in some places than is in the re-released versions of today. The original version must have been the un-cut version (just wish I still had it). It has just come out on DVD on region 1 (USA) and hope (pray) it comes out on region 2. This is one of the best films I have ever seen. All the leading actors/actresses play their roles perfectly. The witty punchlines/quotes are memorable. If anyone has a copy of the original they don't want, I would be more than greatful.
How much reality can be squeezed into a film?.......2002-01-13
OK OK I know this is Stallone we are talking about, but this tale has heart and guts. Stallone is Stallone and he is ideal for this role - his typical role of one man against the system.
This was the first video I bought - one of 450 - and I will never forget its view of life that the characters were immersed in. Even today is stands well.

Average Thriller.......2007-11-10
To be honest this isn't a bad movie at all.
I think it well worth a look and you will enjoy it. It is a bit predictable but you get some good performances particularly David Morse who is very convincing in his role.
As with a lot of modern movies you don't get anything new or interesting to grip you to the screen but what you do get is an interesting enough plot and quite a few edge of seat moments that help put the 104 minute running time in.
If you like your thrillers then this one might well be worth a look.
Disturbia is Hitchcock-Lite.......2007-10-15
Disturbia," was the sleeper hit of the summer on the big screen. It teamed hot Hollywood property Shia LaBeouf with John Badham's protégé director DJ Caruso. The story updates "Rear Window," with a teen twist and intends to send you to the edge of your seat. It doesn't even come close.
The film is a bland concoction that involves a stack of clichés and borrows heavily from across many genres. The love interest for LaBeouf is the sensual and sexy newcomer Sarah Roemer, who promises good things to come if she maintains her credible intelligence and alluring charisma she demonstrates in "Disturbia." LaBeouf already is on the rise but his performance in this is merely perfunctory at best. He is one of the new breeds of young movie stars with his average Joe appearance and cheeky chappy demeanour that the girls dig and the fellas enjoy watching. Admittedly the chemistry between said couple is relatively 'hot' when it hits the right temperature, but due to the lack of generic clarity its hard to really enjoy their relationship as it evolves. Let's just say it fails to resolve the conflicting demands of the romantic comedy and the suspense thriller.
For the most part the humour never really rises above the odd chuckle, and the suspense is half hearted at best. The set-up takes forever to get underway with an unnecessary prologue involving LaBeouf's father in a fatal accident. This plot detail doesn't quite manifest itself clearly in the film's story once LaBeouf is under house arrest, so as an opening scene it already feels superfluous. The early courting between the young couple is heavily derivative of "The Girl Next Door," practically cloning scenes that are an identical match for the Emile Hurst/Elsiha Cuthbert rom-com. Then the thriller elements are thrown in to quicken the pace a little bit. The saving graces come in the form of David Morse, who is almost too good for his material, and Carrie-Anne Moss, convincing as a struggling widow/single parent. These two experienced thesps provide the chops to lift the story into a realm of moderate believability. They however, despite their fine efforts, cannot stop the plot spiralling into absurdity. The last twenty minutes desperately trying to morph into a psycho-thriller with lots of shocks and surprises simply falls flat while the occasionally intrusive score is emphatic when it needs to be subtle, and whimsical when it needs to be sinister. The climax will be predictable to anyone familiar with the psycho on loose films of the early nineties i.e. The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Unlawful Entry, Sleeping with the Enemy, etc. Cod-Hitchcockian thrillers. This is a new breed of that sub-genre - the teenage Cod-Hitchcockian thriller. And this one happens to be below par.
On the basic level of entertainment it succeeds in a run-of-the-mill, glossy, predictable way. LaBeouf and Roemer have teen appeal, and Morse and Moss bring dramatic weight to their roles, but the direction is uninspired and static. Much like Caruso's earlier effort "Taking Lives," the story is a missed opportunity. It all ultimately comes down to a strange amalgamation of generic fodder, mixing up "The Girl Next Door," bizarrely with "The Burbs'" and for the old school film buffs out there, probably more insultingly, "Rear Window." As a standard teen adventure thriller its expected formula stuff, nothing more, nothing less. As an update on Hitchcock its simply depressing.
Highly enjoyable.......2007-10-12
This is Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, but for teenagers. I don't mean that as a criticism - it's actually very watchable.
Instead of being stuck in a flat with a broken leg like James Stewart, the hero of this film has been tagged for punching his Spanish teacher. He's bored, he has a few hand shandies (well, he's a teenager!) and he begins to spy on his neighbours. One neighbour in particular begins to look suspicious.
To reveal any more would be unfair, but it's an intellient and very enjoyable film. It's difficult to be intensely original in this genre, but it's definitely worth a look.
A decent film.......2007-10-08
I thought this was actually a decent film. It was slow moving but got better as it went on. It had some good comical moments and the director succeeded in creating great intensity at key moments without actually being that violent - very difficult to do. The writing was good, although the plot and ending predictable. The acting was strong through out and it is worth seeing. A little bit cliche with the girl next door on one side and the "my neighbours an axe murderer" on the other but nethertheless very entertaining.
Awful.......2007-09-30
I don't usually write reviews; however based on this film that I watched last night I must urge you not to waste your money.
It is the worst film ever made; the genre of this film is thriller.
It should be comedy.
It took until the last 21 minutes for any action to take place, which then lasted roughly twelve minutes.
The camera work was so bad at the end that you couldn't see what was going on.
The acting on some parts was ok, considering the script that they had to work with.
I can see why this film took two years to be released, considering it was completed in 2005.

Michel Gondry Magic.......2007-05-01
After a long wait for this film to be released I was definately not disapointed. Michel Gondry has managed to succesfully blend a very funny storyline with surreal uses of animation and music (and whatever else he does best). Critics disapointed me with their reviewing of this film - they were a bit picky, it was dubbed as a film where Gondry had had a bit too much of his own way and gone over the top. Gondry tends to put 110% into his work, and quite frankly i don't blame him.
Make sure you don't miss it.
Daydream Believer.......2007-01-05
Romantic comedies by definition are supposed to be `feel good'. Girl loses boy, girl wins boy back by some improbable twist of fate or unlikely coincidence that only happens in the movies and audiences share and dwell vicariously in the whole `feel goodness' of it all. As a `romantic comedy' Michel Gondry's latest really is a bit odd. The `comedy' box has been firmly ticked and so has the box labelled `bittersweet love story', but by definition of romantic comedies The Science Of Sleep most certainly is not. If you've seen any of Gondry's music video (The White Stripes) output over recent years or checked out the strange but engaging `Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind', then you may perhaps have a slight advantage over the person next to you, who, well, erm... hasn't seen them.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, as a movie directed by a Gallic film-maker, the comedy of Science is very very French (albeit French humour able to laugh heartily at fart jokes), has a casual indifference to sex and is more than a little warped. The ever versatile Gael Garcia Bernal is Stephane, a shy and awkward graphic artist, who comes to stay with his mother and work as a Calendar Designer following the death of his father. For reasons not best explained Stephane is prone to nodding off unannounced and whilst dreaming, regularly broadcasts television shows (perhaps the stuff of his subconscious). The dream like architecture melds felt, cardboard, cellophane and a hefty portion of surrealism together into a world that eventually becomes hard to distinguish from his waking life. To make matters worse he's fallen in love with his creative and equally kooky neighbour Stephanie (a scruffy yet sultry Charlotte Gainsborough).
It's best to go in The Science Of Sleep with few preconceptions or a desire to work out exactly what's going on. Although it's clear that Gondry is meditating on acceptance, rejection and ultimately love (however fruitless), his patchwork quilt of a movie often appears contrived and a little too clever clever for its own good. There are moments in here that work wonderfully well (the cardboard car chase, felt skiing and the 1 second time machine) and others that are jarring or just simply grate. The Science Of Sleep is a delight to look at, blending in-camera trickery with stop motion puppetry, Gondry's imagination shows no bounds. But by working from his own script he tends to drift toward self-indulgence.
Imaginative, sweetly romantic, frantic and twisted: The Science of Sleep won't be everyone's favourite blend of tea. As a means to seeing something artful, odd and strangely unique, this bonkers tale is like that jolly jaunt through a ramshackle town compared to the uber cool gleam of the big city cinema-scape and is all the better for it.
