4 out of 5 stars A film soundtrack of quality and depth.......2008-03-04

BT's first four albums were a gradual musical development, from progressive trance in the mid-90s through breakbeat and glitchy sounds and then a more organic and acoustic influence developed. However "This Binary Universe", his fifth album, is a complete departure from that progression, so when I first heard it, before I'd read any reviews, I was a bit surprised. Reflecting his film work, this album is like the soundtrack to a non-existent movie (although if you buy the edition with the DVD, the movie isn't non-existent). It's definitely a grower though and BT is right up there alongside Craig Armstrong and David Arnold as a composer that blends subtle and classic beautiful music with complex production to produce a stunning result that is definitely worth giving your full attention to.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD sets a very high standard........2008-01-29

I saw track 4 as a demonstration in a shop in Germany recently, and was very impressed with the amazing images. The shop was closed and I could hear nothing so I thought it was all a TV company promo. Back in Australia I was very pleased to find these same images on this disc. The images are certainly amazing on a 37inch TV. The sound quality is excellent, why dont more artists give their fans this quality and 5.1 sound? . My favourite tracks are 4,5,and 6.Some of the tracks are 3.5 or 4 stars, but the overall package deserves 5, its a high standard that more should follow.

5 out of 5 stars Aural sex!.......2008-01-18

The bottom line of my review is whatever your musical taste, if you haven't given this album a listen you deserve to die. So buy it!

This music is the future and the past all rolled in to one. A rich and beautiful package from Brian Transeau, classically trained, musical genius - though better known for practically inventing trance.

This album is going to upset close minded hardcore "ravers" who claim to be fans of BT. To be honest I don't think anyone would know what to expect before listening to this album. This truly is an original piece of work, which is a rare thing in today's music scene.

He has taken the structure and even some of the elements and instruments that you would expect from classical composers such as Mozart or Barber and rammed them in to his computer fusing them with more modern production techniques and styles incorporating break beats in places, sampling and his well known complex time correction techniques and stuttering. You get a full package with an accompanying DVD with videos for all tracks and stunning artwork and sleeve - I had to fight myself to actually remove the plastic covering.

1. All that makes us human continues - an epic, harmonious, ambient track composed entirely in the audio programming language Csound and taking him 6 months to complete. The accompanying video was also completely coded to reflect the creation of the track.

2. Dynamic Symmetry - the name comes from natural design methodology, and mathematical proportioning. This song starts out very up-beat with exquisite break beats and melody, played on what sounds like tubular bells. Half-way through it then evolves into lounge-jazz almost, then he gradually deconstructs it towards the end of the song.

3. The Internal Locus - starts out with gentle ambiance accompanied by a piano until about 3 and a half minutes in were erupts in to an epic section of flutes, strings and percussion that you might expect to hear whilst playing Halo. It swings unnoticably between this and something like the intro up till about 8 minutes were the whole song breaks down and changes pretty much completely.

4. 1.618 - this number as many will know is the golden ration found in the Fibonacci sequence and in much of nature. This song perfectly reflects that, starting out atmospherically, then suddenly exploding in to a marvelous conglomeration of guitars, base sounds and stuttered electronic beats. It progresses gradually epically.

5. See you on the other side - the longest track on the album, but by no means boring. Like some of the other this slowly builds up and deconstructs throughout.

6. The Antikythera Mechanism - In my opinion the standout track. Starting out with gentle piano and ambient backdrop building up with guitars and other sounds then deconstructed and broken down into a simple rhythmic stuttering of beats and noise. Then from nowhere comes a full orchestra which is then broken down and deconstructed.

7. Good morning Kaia - the final song on the album dedicated to his new born daughter kaia. This an emotional masterpiece bringing you to the verge of tears (the video pushes you over the edge with pictures and video of her accompanied by a poem by BT about her and their relationship).

This album will change your life. Change the way you think about music. Drag you through every emotion and feeling. To be honest I'm not sure why your reading this when you could be purchasing this album and listening to it, and watching the video.

5 out of 5 stars New directions.......2007-09-27

I think BT's release, This Binary Universe, is completely groundbreaking and taking a turn into new directions for the first time. Completely electronic, organic, crisp and with lots of emotion to it. And it's a significant work that only he does, as a innovator, that most BT fans haven't discovered before. It might change things alittle bit for old fans. The DTS track has good definition and dynamics.

5 out of 5 stars His best album.......2007-08-26

his previous ambient trance stuff sucked

this album is on par with Múm's older material

this album will confuse some BT fans
this album will make some BT fans realise how much better music is out there
this album will make new listeners buy the other BT albums and they'll be disappointed
