The most underrated band in the World.......2006-09-09
I and my wife saw this band live yesterday. The band members are highly accomplished musicians and were downright huge listen too. Sam Andrew was incredible on his Summertime (he made the guitar arrangements in the famous song). I have seldom seen such an underrated band in my life. Big Brother and the Holding company was Janis Joplin's original band from - 66 to - 68. Before they became "Janis Joplin and Big Brother" the original members Sam Andrew and Peter Albin met in a Victorian mansion in San Francisco in 1962. They were a very active part of the creation of the hippie movement. In this DVD they recreate these out of the ordinary days where today's concept of individual freedom was created. The DVD mix old material such as vivid recordings of concerts in 1967 with new and interesting interviews with the original band members. This DVD should been seen by everyone who are interested in the San Francisco sound and the hippie movement of the - 60's. The DVD is both carefully created and quite long running. The original band member's in Big Brother and the Holding company tour the world today. They don't seem to have let the years wear them down. Sam Andrew even took the time for a little chat after the concert yesterday. He was a very charming and friendly human being (far from the rock star image). They were never "just a band of Janis Joplin". Sam Andrew and James Gurlie did a lot in the sound and songs in many of the most famous Janis Joplin songs. They are today as they were then in their own right worth listen too as they are both fascinating and brilliant individuals.
Inacurate title description.......2004-01-29
Be careful when buying this. It looks as though this is a new realease but it is in fact the European release of "Nine Hundred Nights". I had to buy it to find out though as the Region 1 and Region 2 versions have totally different catalogue numbers.
That aside the DVD is a good piece of history even if it is more for true fans than casual collectors. There are some clips of otherwise unavailable footage and reproductions of the same old stuff too.
Anyway, wherever is "Janis The Way She Was" on DVD? That would be apreciated a lot more than this as I'm sure anybody buying this is only getting it for the Janis Joplin content.
For real Big Brother enthusiasts only.......2004-01-03
Documentary of Big Brother and the Holding Company - discussions with members today and vintage footage (most in B&W). There must be a limited amount of film available as most shown here is pretty poor quality...however found it very intersting about how they all got together, their memories of Janis and their wonderful sound. Shame no talk about what happened to Big Brother after Janis left. They were obviously all very talented musicians - must have done something...surely.

HOWARD JONES STORMS AMERICA IN THIS FINE CONCERT........2008-01-07
Howard Jones is for me one of the best singers of the 1980's and an excellent singer/songwriter. This Dvd is a must for all fans with a playlist you can only wish to see and hear. All the classic songs are performed to perfection by Howard in front of a very young american audience. He is also assisted by Carole Steele on percussion which is a surprise given Howards use for the electronic Synth. The stage itself is very minimal with just Howard in one corner playing the Clavinet Synth, and Carole Steele in the other corner. I would have prefered something a little bigger but it does set the mood for Howards lower key concerts. This was filmed in the early 1990's so Howard still looks youthful and not much different from his debut back in 1983. It's a real pity that mime artist Jed Hoyle wasn't present here but during the 90's he went his own way. This Dvd plays for just under two hours and is a joy to watch and be transported back to the sound of the 80's. However as for the Dvd itself there was an early 'Encoding' fault with this issue. Therefore it will not play on some players or have odd playback on others just on the first pressings. Suffice to say it's a must buy for the collection so just get it !! or you will be missing out.
