Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crystal Clear?.......2007-01-14

Having read some of the other reviews, I started to have doubts that we were talking about the same DVD or artist. Just to clarify some details about Joe Satriani. He doesn't play an Ibanez Evo. There is no such guitar. Joe plays his own signature Ibanez JS guitars - JS1000/JS1200 etc. Steve Vai plays his own signature Ibanez Jem guitars - JEM7V/JEM77B etc. Steve names his guitars and one of them is named 'Evo', another 'Flo'. Steve Vai received guitar lessons from Joe Satriani, not the other way around.
This dvd is excellent both as entertainment and as a learning tool. Anyone who is interested in how and what Joe plays will not be disappointed. A lot of the camera work focuses on Joe's fretwork. So its a must for any electric guitar player/enthusiast who wants to learn from a master. If you just want to sit back and enjoy the concert then visually and acoustically the dvd is outstanding with Joe covering all of the classics and a good selection of the gems from Engines of Creation. Worth every penny!

3 out of 5 stars Sorry , not that goood........2005-12-06

Having heard Joe in the live version of his "Surfing With The Alien" CD, I was then amazed by the pureness and all-over-sound quality and the superb craftmanship of all participants in the band.
I was also thrilled by his contribution on the 3G DVD, where he kicked some serious ass v.s Yngwie Malmsten and Steve Vai.

But, on my copy of his Live In Frisco DVD, Joe is simply not living up to my expectations. The soundpicture is muddy and murky, with Joe's guitar quite fuzzy and with a volume just barely above a rumbling bass and hammering drums. (Kill the producer !!!) Even with the volume turned way down on my Arcam amp and JBL Studio monitors, there is a nagging overall distortion in the soundpicture, probably due to an input overload of the recording system. (Kill the recording engineer !!!)
The keyboard sound is non existent! (Kill the mixer !!!)
The tone from Joe's Ibanez EVO guitar barely changes at all. He is "surfing along" with many of the songs without differentiating between them, alas they all sound alike to me. While the other guy's in Joe's band are OK, they never suprises me compared to the guys Steve Vai uses in some of his latest concerts, and not to mention the guys in Dream Theater, which are outstanding performers.
Nahh, Joe has to do a lot better if he want to kick the ass of Petrucchi and Vai in the future.

So, hey Joe.
Find som new ways to shred your Ibanez. Preferabely, buy a couple of "different" guitars to get out of the sound-monotomy you display in this Frisco concert.

5 out of 5 stars more please.......2005-03-19

seen ole,joe a few time,s and like a good wine he get,s better with age,but ive picked up on what p-d- g- from bristol remarked by saying that he was possibly taught by steve vai wrong steve vai was under the wing of frank zappa who was possibly one of the best rock guitar player,s who ever lived and then he joined whitesnake and the rest as they say is history, great concert though, graham.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome live performance.......2004-10-21

I'd been in to Satch since the age of about 16/17, and I've been listening to him on and off for the past 7 years. He is without doubt one of the greatest guitarists ever to walk the planet, and in my opinion is the best all-rounder out of the modern-day extroverts such as Vai, Malmsteen, Petrucci, etc. Apparently he taught Steve Vai how to play! Vai may be the best technician ever, but some of his stuff is, quite simply, too much! John Petrucci is awesome also - but there's something about Satriani that makes him my favourite. He's certainly the most tasteful.

This live DVD made me realise how much I missed listening to Joe (which I hadn't for a while), the stuff from Crystal Planet album is really good: 'Raspberry Jam' is an outstanding track, as is the ballad 'Love Thing', and the emotive 'Until we say goodbye' is brilliant. All the hard rock ones are also great, but I think Satch saves the best until last - 'Rubina', the final track on disc 2, is probably my favourite. Played with such feeling and emotion, this is a truly great song and one of his best without a doubt. The backing band are very good, but this is really about Joe Satriani showing off his best songs, and how awesome they sound live. His technique is fantastic, as is his tone, and the sound quality of the DVD really helps here.

Go and buy this if you play guitar and wish to see what i'm ranting about. If you're a Satch fan this is as good as it gets. I've been inspired to learn his songs again. Simply awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Satriani - Live in San Fransisco 2000.......2004-04-25

Anyone who doesn't like this DVD is to be mentally challenged. Its awicked DVD! It has loads of songs on including, Surfing With The Alien,Satch Boogie, Devils Slide, Time, Summer Song, Ceremony, Circles, Crush OfLove, One Big Rush, Rasberry Jam Delta-V, Rubina, Big Bad Moon, Flying InA Blue Dream, Borg Sex, Until We Say Goodbye, Love Thing, Ice 9, TheExtremist, House Full Of Bullets, Bass Solo, The Mystical Potato HeadGroove Thing, Always With Me Always With You, Freinds and Crystal Planet, what more could you ask for, when you watch this and your not a guitarplayer this will influence you to play, and if you are a guitar playerthis will influence you to play better it did with me. Its a genuinallygood DVD even though there are not many songs off the Crystal Planet albumwhich I would have like to hear live, but anyone a Satch fan I recomendthis DVD.
