John martyn at his finest!!!.......2007-10-22
John Martyn is probably one of the finest guitarists around.., for that reason alone this dvd is totally worth purchasing. the sound and picture quality could be better, but you forget that as mr. Martyn invites you into his unique universe of lovely melodies and sublime guitar-arrangements! GREAT STUFF!!!!
It doesn't matter that it's 1987..........2007-07-18
I was somewhat apprehensive about a DVD of a 1987 John Martyn gig, but thankfully there's little to indicate that it's the 1980s. The concert sees Martyn and Danny Thompson on great form as they take the audience on 'a trip down memory lane', playing through a collection of mostly 1970s numbers, with that classic guitar and double bass set-up. Fans of JM's acoustic material will love it: John's guitar playing and voice are sublime, and the chemistry and understanding between John and Danny is as strong as ever.
The only negatives concern the DVD production: there is little to disguise that this is essentially a TV programme put straight onto DVD, and there are no extras. But with a performance as majestic as this, it's of little real importance.
Brilliant stuff.
Beautiful.......2006-04-06
I am a great fan of all of JM's work. All of which is displayed on this DVD. His voice is just as outstanding live as it is on record. Danny plays bass whilst John swaps between electric and acoustic. Sweet Little Mystery and May You Never are the highlights for me. The reason i have given it 4 stars instead of 5 is because i felt there could've have maybe been one or two more instruments on stage (even just some session musicians adding a bit of percussion).
A great gig nonetheless. Definetely worth buying.
Absolutely Superb.......2005-12-06
this is the BEST footage of John and Danny available, BUY IT !!! , you wont be disappointed.

Quality music but poor quality DVD.......2007-02-25
OK, The Apprentice album was one of John's better later albums and I remember the tour was also one of the better ones. Sadly this DVD is a poor representation of this.
The quality of the picture is pretty poor, being out of focus most of the time. This could be a bootleg recording if you didn't know better. Having said that, the range of tracks is OK with a lot of the classics there although only four of the thirteen tracks are actually from The Apprentice album. A bit of a treat, I suppose, is seeing Dave Gilmour and Andy Shepherd playing with him but it would not justify buying the DVD for that.
No, not a lot of effort has been put into this to ensure it is a quality example of music history. John Martyn deserves better than this.

Hugely disappointing.......2007-08-28
Yes - it does have the featured artists, but to call this the greatest 80's videos is, I believe, an infringement of the Trades Descriptions Act!
In addition to the 3 or 4 named videos you also get
Dexy's - There there my dear
Kate Bush - Army Dreamers
Specials - Nelson Mandela
Robert Palmer - She makes my day
Ultravox - the Thin Wall
OMD - Locomotion
Culture Club - It's a miracle
China Cris - Christian
etc
Maybe I'm getting senile, but these are NOT their greatest videos. Don't waste your money!!!
It Does What It Says On The Tin!.......2004-07-07
Contains original video footage which invokes memories of the 80's. Maybe this is what you expected to find, but it's not always the case, another 80's DVD purchased at the same time simply contained artists performing (or miming) their classic in a TV studio.
This DVD contains a good selection of music.
