5 out of 5 stars Timeless!.......2008-01-31

Get this DVD, find three hours of spare time (some good wine may also come handy), and enjoy the Yes magic: you will be amazed at the quality of this show!

At last the magic and power of Yes performance was caught on DVD with proper quality both of video and audio - the picture and sound are both great, DTS surround track is incredible.
I am not going to give you the details - you will see it yourself, here is just my impression of this magnificent show.

The band is at its best - the musicians are enjoying the show, and the orchestra gives the band as good as it gets, really having a good time on stage. The interaction of the band and the orchestra is a creative one; they complement each other giving Yes music another dimension: just check the brilliant performance of my all-time Yes favorites "The Gates of Delirium" and "Close to the Edge"!

Standing ovation of the audience is its way of sincere appreciation of timeless music and unforgettable evening.

This DVD is an exemplary case when everything's in proper place: excellent performance of the band/orchestra and exceptional quality of DVD itself. This is definitely the best Yes DVD so far.

This DVD is a must - you will enjoy the show over and over again!

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2008-01-04

Given that the band are accompanied by a youth orchestra this turns out to be quite a surprisingly enjoyable experience as you'd probably expect the orchestra to be a litte naff - not so at all. Its well filmed and of high quality production. A great set list and a couple of wonderful solo acoustic pieces from Steve Howe make it a great two hours or so of viewing. Thoroughly re commended, though Rick Wakeman is missing. Its worth it to see the look of joy on the faces of the orcehestra at the end of the show which no doubt reflect their experience of playing with a bunch of rock musicians who have just taken them to another level. The bands musician ship is awesome. I have not seen other Yes live dvd's, but I get the impression they can be of variable quality - this is not one of those. Check out the live at Montreaux as well as that apparantly is excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Yes at their best.......2007-07-04

Let's face it, with Yes there is no middle ground. You either love their music, or you hate it. If you are reading this, then you probably appreciate their unique style. However, I was dubious about buying this DVD! Would it just be a bunch of old men going through the motions and trying to re-live their glory days - or would they still be able to recreate that glorious sound that I have enjoyed for well over 35 years. I need not have worried - this is an absolutely stunning concert, with the band, the orchestra, the sound and the lighting all spot-on. The entire band (as well as the orchestra) appears to be having a great time, and they put their heart in soul into their music. Jon's ramblings about love and the divine become a little bit annoying after the 3rd or 4th replay, but that is only a minor gripe. If you enjoy their music then this is a must-buy DVD, definitely worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Pick this one from the glut of current Yes material!.......2004-02-12

A great dvd of a live rock performance by any standards. The fact that it is Yes makes it phenomenal.

I was pleasantly surprised that using an orchestra did actually work - and even contribute something extra in places - and it was a joy to see a new generation of young people with musical talent of their own appreciating quality music that is (only) 30 years old.

Tom Brislin on keys did an admirable job, as have all who have filled Wakeman's shoes, or cape, on occasions - but somehow Rick's presence is still missing.

Sound quality dipped occasionally, particularly in some of the climaxes, but overall was excellent - and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves.

But please, please, anyone else thinking of making music dvd's: leave out the stupid animations (glad we had the option to) and have some more lingering shots of fingerwork for us musicians who must make up a large part of the potential audience.

5 out of 5 stars If only they could all be like this. . ........2003-10-12

Streets ahead of any other DVD recording of Yes, and most other concert recordings of other bands as well I'd imagine. This is a live concert filmed in Amsterdam with the European Festival Orchestra, and is a kind of dream fulfilment for band and fans. Unlike most of the other Yes DVDs, this one has everything you hope DVDs will have - crisp video, excellent audio, great production values, and a fantastic set list. The orchestra really have some serious fun as well, and end up on the stage dancing with the band during the encores!

Some touches I really liked: good closeups of each of the band members, including Tom Brislin's excellent work on the keys (a very accomplished musician for somebody who looks about twelve!); the great video coverage of the band, audience, and orchestra; the use of the overhead mirrors which gives some unusual and interesting angles on the instruments and performers; and the real feeling of being at a live concert so sadly lacking in other DVDs, Keys to Ascension and Live in Philadelphia notably. What I liked was the feeling that everybody was having such a good time out there, the vibes are fantastic.

My only criticism is that it is rather difficult at times to hear the orchestra, but I'm guessing that's a common problem and probably harder for the audience than for me in my lounge room, so I won't complain too much. What you can hear is great though, those musos really had a good time!

Wonderful to hear Gates of Delirium, enhanced by orchestral backing - the depth and drama of the piece came through very strongly.

All the band is in fine form, and everything is top notch.

A must have. Hopefully Yesspeaks will live up to the same standards when it comes out.

Saw the concert and waited a long time for this release.
This dvd is super and stands next to Roger Waters release as a quality release.
Sound:nearly perfect( miss a bit a mix where the orchestra has more input )..Picture : sharp,clear..perfect. Camera-use : perfect and edited with class.
The playing superbe...especially Ritual where Steve is note for note perfect.
This dvd is worth every Euro and hopefully an example to other artists how it should be done.

5 out of 5 stars Close to the Edge of Perfection.......2003-04-04

Having seen this tour live, I bought the DVD as a reminder of an evenings entertainment that will stay with me for a very long time. Being a Yes fan of some 25 years I have lived through the good years and the not so good. It is a testament to the group and their music that they can still produce a sell-out tour three decades after most of their classic tracks were written.

We know their songs so well now that, as Jon is keen to impart to us, they have taken on an almost spiritual quality and to hear them sung live is an experience to be relished. How much longer can the band continue ? They show no sign of wanting to let go of the legacy they have created.

I must own up to being a Wakeman fan and consider the group incomplete without him behind the keyboards but Tom Brislin puts in a worthy performance despite being mixed down to almost inaudible levels at times. Adding an orchestra to fill out the sound must have been a risky decision but it definitely works here, providing a well-balanced background accompaniment without encroaching on the overall Yes feel.

If you don't have a Yes DVD in your collection, this is a good one to get. Most of the classic tracks are here, performed close to perfection by the leads. Jon's voice is on top form, Steve's guitar work is awesome as ever and Chris's trousers have never been tighter. His bass during the climax of Starship Trooper can never be fully replicated on a home system, you really do have to be there, but he still manages to hit a few emotional chords for any true Yes fan.

As for production, the seemingly obligatory animations can be dispensed with (and are by default), leaving you free to enjoy the music without distraction as intended. Camera work is good, respectful of the band members, sound quality excellent, picture encoding almost flawless. The additional material is just padding, see it once and forget it.

This DVD will tide me over until next year when Yes tour again, this time with Rick back where he belongs. If you are a Yes fan I suggest you give this DVD a home. I promise you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Through the Gates and beyond.......2007-08-04

This is the first time since "Time And A Word" the band have worked with an Orchestra. OK so if your a YES fan this ones a no brainer just buy it. If your new to the band then you should know that YES compose long pieces of music sometimes more than 20 minutes long. This DVD brings to a head the concept of long rock based tracks. If ever any proof where needed of this then listen to "Gates Of Delerium". This track from the relayer album is fantastic in it's original form. Now on this DVD with Orchestra it is taken to it's logical final state. The whole concert is sublime and includes most of the best of YES music from 1970 to the present day. So they look odd but if you can find a group of musos with more colective talent let me know and good luck in your search.

5 out of 5 stars The more challenging Yes songs.......2007-06-24

This is a superb DVD for those Yes fans who appreciate the more challenging music they have produced over the years. Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans for example.
Superb performances from all involved and Anderson's voice is in top form.
Goosebumpingly good!

3 out of 5 stars Ageing Hippies.......2005-05-22

I've followed Yes and bought their albums since I was a school boy in 1971. Oh dear, oh deary-me! What has happened to Yes? Specifically, Symphonic Yes?
Yes were at the creative and playing hight from 1971 until 1974 and it's gone downhill ever since (with the exception of the odd track, here and there). And to see Jon Anderson 'ponce'-around like some spaced-out, senile hippy just made me cringe with embarrassment. Fortunately, he keeps that unique voice of his. If only he wouldn't 'entertain' us with his 'Earth-Mother' act!
Steve Howe's guitar playing suffers from Osteoporosis! Gone is the fluid, spontaneity of 'Yours is no Disgrace' from 'Yessongs'. And to retain that thin, long hair makes him look like a high-foreheaded clown
Chris Squire's playing is excellent but the 'Max Wall' look does nothing for his image.
Alan White's drumming is as powerfully precise as it ever was and he retains his credibility in 'looks'.
Tom Brislin did a reasonable job of emulating the 'master', Rick Wakeman.
I'll stick with the music that came from their best days and best albums, namely: 'Fragile', 'Close to the Edge', 'Yessongs' (their best live album), 'Tales from Topgraphic Oceans' and 'Relayer'.

5 out of 5 stars Prog-tastic!.......2005-01-05

I was 'lucky' enough to have seen Yes live in 2004 at Wembley Arena on their 35th Anniversary tour. It wasn't the best concert I've ever seen, but then it was Wembley with its famous accoustics (if it takes you 8 bars to recognise 'going for the one' you're in trouble). However, I'd have given my eye teeth to have been at one of the Symphonic concerts if this DVD is any indication of what they were like! It's recordings like this which make you want to weep with frustration that you weren't there. Personally, I thought the chappie playing keyboards (a young Ben Stiller look-alike) was not only talented but also enthusiastic which made him an improvement on the perenially miserable Wakeman (sorry Rick - but the BBC don't have you on 'Grumpy Old Men' for nothing - even if you do manage to crack the odd smile on the YesSpeak documentary). The band were positive and very 'together' and the orchestra - any time they're having a party, I'm in there! Nobody - at all - seemed to be having anything other than a good time! Especially the oboe player and the French horns! I've never seen an orchestra get up and start dancing along before this... We've had the DVD for about three weeks and have watched it about 15 times by now.

If you're pondering about which concert DVD to get - don't. House of Yes is OK. 35th Anniversary Tour is OK. But this is sublime. AND you get the bonus of a CD of some of the concert too.
