The best of 3 5.1 Lips lp's.......2006-12-21
What your 5.1 system has been waiting for..........2004-09-09
The visual selections are adequate, although holding plenty for the avid F.L. fan - including a preview of the stiil-in-production feature film, which looks o.k. to me, but nothing special. At least to those who have seen films not made in Hollywood. The videos are again, o.k. nothing earth shattering.
It is the mix that's worth having. Whilst many DVD-As and SACDs are content to use the format to merely add ambience (see Bob Dylan SACDs, with a couple of exceptions), Yoshimi utilises the effect to a startling degree. Instruments flying around like nobody's business, lots of additional instruments have also been added to this package, tastefully, too.
So, perhaps the kitchen sink HAS been thrown at Yoshimi DVD-A, but by God it sounds good.
Yoshimi DVD-A should be to 5.1 surround systems what Dark Side Of The Moon was to Hi-Fi's in the 70's. Go on, treat yourself. And your Dvd-A.
Even better than the real thing.......2004-03-11
The fear is that this would be the straw which broke the camel's back. Luckily, even for someone without the full benefits of 5.1 surround sound and with no hearing in one ear which, despite what Brian Wilson might say, rather diminshes the sonic effect, the improved sound quality is obvious. Songs are all instantly recognisable but different textures, patterns and effects appear. Even the menu music which appears to be a variation on "Approaching Pavonis" is startlingly beautiful.
In some ways, the songs which benefit the most are the less insistent tracks such as "One More Robot" and "Ego Tripping At the Gates of Hell" rather than the anthemic "Do You Realize?" and "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1."
Not all the audio extras will be new to those who have the singles but best is probably "Up Above the Morning Hum" which Coyne describes as Steven Droyd's greatest song which is emphatically not a left handed compliment.
The videos are generally funny and encapsulate what makes the Lips so special: that combination of humour and sincerity, accomplishment and abandon. My favourite is "Phoebe Battles the Pink Robots" where Wayne Coyne gives his all for the alternatively monikered hymn to the karate kid.
Whether all albums in the future will simultaneously be released in5.1 and normal versions remains to be seen. For the time being, the Flaming Lips, as is so often the case, are in a field of their own.
A whole new dimension for yoshimi........2004-01-14
The audio tracks are acompanied with an animated waveform 'cartoon' which although not staggering provides a more than aceptable visual focus to the album.
The package is finished off with anew selection of extras, notably the audio tracks which comprised last years 'yoshimi' and 'fight test' EPs providing a nice cheap alternative to hunting down these discs for newer collectors.
The video extras are cool enough, the deleted section from friends is an interesting inclusion and round out what is already an excellent package both artistically and in value for money terms.
Worthwhile even if you already have the audio version.
