Great Concert DVD.......2007-09-06
Dave is one helluva modern Americana songwriter & performer!
I would agree with previous reviewers, this is truly great concert from famous Austin City Limits show.
Songs are mostly from 'BlackJack David' and 'King of California' albums, joined with few Blasters classics.
Dave plays mostly great acoustic guitar on his folk numbers like 'Mary Brown' 'King of California' or '4th od July' , and his electric on few ones, like endindg number 'Marie,Marie'. We also have 'Barn Burning' played like on his solo album, not quite in the style of Blasters.
Dave & his bans play realy cool music with accordian, mandoline, etc.
Sound is only but great stereo, picture is cristal, it's too bad this DVD is only about hour long.
howl from the desert.......2007-08-22
A delight. Top quality recording of a top quality artist at the very top of his game. Music DVD doesn't get any better than this ACL 1999 programme. If you don't already own a Dave Alvin product you could easily start here - or the King of California acoustic compilation perhaps. If you are already a fan then a must purchase. When the Blasters first appeared in Blighty at Dingwalls early on in the 80's I asked Dave if he'd ever thought about going out on his own - considering he was the songwriter. `All in good time son,' he said. I never thought he'd develop into anything like this though. Dave claims his barroom guys are intimidated to be on a stage once occupied by the likes of Townes and Lightning Hopkins but they don't show it. Looking sharp and hard in turquoise, Indian silver and black leather (legs astride just like his dancer mother) he powers his crack band through a mix of mainly originals with the odd Woody Guthrie, Chuck Berry and 400 year old folk song thrown in good measure. Its no exaggeration to put Dave's music in that company either: recently Dylan's been playing his songs on his radio shows and Springsteen's been a fan for years. Touching down with the ball kicked by the Band and Creedence, this is American music par excellence. Every song is a winner, but highlights include a stunning version of `Border Radio', segueing in the middle into `Cupid Pull back Your Bow' (I'd always wondered what song from 1962 she'd been requesting), and - with Hacienda Brother Chris Gaffney on accordion - a scorching `Marie Marie' (Dave's original not the risible Shakin' Stevens' TOTP travesty version). Rick Shea's soloing on Abilene is great too - on mandolin, steel and lap guitars he easily fills the shoes of the redoubtable Greg Liesz. Dave's kick ass guitar on `4th July' is magnificent - what a great song, gets better on every listen. The band is on top form particularly Joe Terry on keyboard - for some reason they were not billed that night as the Guilty Men. Drawbacks? At little more than an hour it seemed way too short. With a back catalogue like Alvin's it could have been three times as long, but we'll just have to go to the next gig instead! Unobtrusive camera work (none of those stupid camera movements so often used to make crap bands seem exciting), professional editing and top quality audio make this a fantastic trip through the dustbowl to the Promised Land courtesy of Dave's Jubilee Train. Get on board there's a new deal coming.
Dave Alvin - King of California & Americana.......2007-06-10
I saw Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men a few years ago at The Borderline in London, and it was simpy a stunning set. So it was great to see that at last we have full DVD of Dave's music. His back catalogue from the Blasters up to his solo career demonstrates that Dave Alvin's music of the last 20 year surpasses even the likes of Neil & Bruce. This set dates back to the Black David record (1999), and I just wish it lasted another hour or so. I'd also strongly recommend the Blasters DVD 'Going Home' with Phil and Dave tearing their way through their back catalogue & exploring their roots.
American Music.......2007-05-18
A great Ameican songwriter at the top of his game. Dave's laid back humble approach comes over well in this show. Backed by a great band Dave covers all bases in Great American music. His soulful voice and stunning guitar work could easily convert anyone. A great tunesmith and showman right up there with Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. A well worth addition to anyones music dvd collection.Yes indeed American music at it's best.
American Legend.......2007-05-17
I am a massive Dave Alvin fan but haven't had the chance to see him live , this DVD is a Godsend . I was excited enough to see it was coming out but when i discovered that it was recorded at the time of Daves absolute classic of an album Blackjack David , well , i was in heaven.
The concert itself is superb , Dave tears through old and new classics with the passion , drive and (when required ) subtlety he's know for and the songs are , simply , among the best ever written in the Americana (or indeed any ) genre .
Can't recomend it highly enough .
Stand outs include :
Dave himself , the magnificent band (especially the Mandolin/Pedal Steel player) ,
King Of California , Abilene , Border Radio , Marie Marie ahhh it's all top class .
Just buy it .
