Something new from the 1930s.......2004-02-29
Gillian Welch is a an artist that seems to come from another era. Her whole stage persona evokes "poor white trash" from the Appalachian Mountains in the 1930s, or a character from Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. It is no coincidence that this whole DVD is in black and white. Gillian herself is thin, pale, wears dated floral dresses. She plays an old Gibson acoustic guitar which dates from the the 1960s or, occasionally, and old open back banjo. Her playing partner, David Rawlings, wears plain dark suits and plays an Epiphone Olympia Guitar from the 1930s. That's it. No drums, bass, keyboards - just the two of them on stage, playing guitar and singing harmonies. It is truly beautiful music. Stark, raw, melodic, spritual, sometimes dark and chilling. Some might call it country, bluegrass, or old timey music. It is certainly heavily influenced by these genres. But I think these two (and incidentally David Rawlings really deserves to have equal billing)have done something very new and fresh. This is not just musical nostalgia. It is using old flavours, mixing them together to produce a completely new dish.
Listen to this music - it might take a little time - but it will reach right in - to deep recesses in you musical soul you didn't know existed. Special mention should be made of Rawlings guitar playing - it will take you breath away.

Everton are not a joke.......2007-12-13
I think it's great that Everton have released a DVD of this famous victory against newly promoted Sunderland. It will really show our neighbours across the park that we certainly aren't a joke this season & that we should be taken seriously.
I can't wait to see what 'extras' will be on the DVD??
I won't be buying from Amazon though, as I think the club have struck some kind of deal with Tesco!?

A great piece of Sci-Fi .......2006-07-05
I'm surprised I missed this one. It must have escaped me for some reason! Now that I've come cross it I'm glad I did.
The background to this sci-fi action piece is a dark and corrupt future where the rich live in decadence, the poor organise themselves into a resistance movement, and a group of shadowy individuals loiter in between, selling arms to one to fight the other, and thus profiting through the existence of both.
The premise is that one of these shadowy arms-sellers is tracked and followed to the home of his lover. The woman is shot and killed, whilst he is taken away for memory erasure and some other suggested-at purpose. However, the man wakes up later only to find himself reanimated into his lover's body as part of an experiment.
I really enjoyed this film; the whole premise is great, but a difficult one to act (how would you act, being inside the body of your dead ex?) but the leads pull it off consumately. More good acting is found in the less high-profile roles, including the lead's prison co-inmate; and notably that of the sadistic officer in his patrol vehicle, equipped with its psycho-surgical appliances.
There are one or two twists and turns in the story along the way - though I dare say the storyline could have been tighter in places - so in all the whole film was a well-acted action-packed sci-fi ride.
Interesting SF film marred by poor script.......2001-06-22
A competently made SF film with an intriging premise: rich people extend their lives by transferring their minds into the younger bodies of poor people. Adding spice to the story is that the first transfer is of a man's mind into a woman's body.
Some good acting makes up for a poorly written script. I enjoyed it and recommended the film to SF fans.
The image is fair: it appears to be a transfer from the original video master and is of broadcast quality with some aliasing at times.
The sound is acceptable with decent effects during action sequences.
