Not bad, but not PG at his Splinter Group best..........2008-01-04
I'd generally have to agree with most of the other reviews here - a fairly enjoyable good standard blues/rock DVD, but somewhat lacking in the Peter Green department.
Having witnessed PG & the Splinter Group live earlier in their career a number of times, this concert doesn't really showcase the band at their peak. The whole band in general don't appear as enthusiastic as they did in the past, and for various reasons split up not long afterwards anyway.
Focusing on PG himself, we all know and understand his long and difficult road back to performing again, but here he is just too laid back, almost sleepy at times, & seems extremely bored with most of what's going on. Earlier in the Splinter Group career he played guitar and sang with more fire & energy, for instance check out the first Splinter Group CD release (the blue one) where despite sometimes sounding rusty & coarse his playing is far more inventive and `lively'. Even Nigel's solo's on this DVD don't sound as tuneful as they did in the past (not really keen on the ending to Black Magic Woman here, especially compared to Santana's versions).
However, the DVD is still worth purchasing if you're a Greeny fan, the version of the Stumble is still pretty good by any standard, and his slide work on Believe My Time Aint Long is respectable enough (as is some of the Wah-Wah work), but if your expecting PG at his Splinter Group best, or from his even greater Fleetwood Mac day's, just be prepared for a disappointment.
On a more positive note, much of the Acoustic section of the concert is quite enjoyable, the sound quality is superb, the song choices are a good mix, and most of the filming is of a good standard too. So overall I'd say 3 stars, but on CD there's much better examples out there of the legendary Peter Green from any era.
Peter Green - Live.......2004-03-17
This is a truly excellent live performance by Peter Green and the Splinter Group. The DVD is split into two sets, Acoustic and Electric, both sets are different.
Fans MUST remember that the group is now more than a Peter Green exhibition and masterclass. Nigel Watson plays a large part in the acoustic performances but Peter's past magic is still evident in the electric set.
After all of Pete's troubles it's great to see him again, not at his absolute best, but close enough for all who love his work.
Love the music, live the music.
This is NOT Fleetwood Mac.......2004-02-03
Nearly everyone who is contemplating buying this will remember Peter Green in Fleetwood Mac. Perhaps the best and most influential blues rock guitarist of all time, but that was then.
Nowadays he plays in the Splinter Group, but not as lead guitar, thats left to Nigel Watson. It is he who leads this brilliant blues band. However there is no missing the influence and mastery that Green brings to the new songs and old blues numbers. Their performance on stage is nothing short of sensational. This band should be recognised for what it has become, the best blues band performing today. Get this DVD, not just because of Peter Green. If you love The Blues its a must have!!
a legend he is , but not this dvd!.......2003-11-18
one of the first albums i bought was pious bird of good omen. i also have the first two solos he did. when you watch this concert you will be amazed to see how little PG plays. his left hand is working but the right is either still or waving in the air. hence one of the main video shots include PG's left hand, his head and the drummer behind him. nearly all guitar solos are NOT done by PG.i dont want him to jump around, just play and sing. i dont care how old he is, anyone who has heard him loves him!!! this would be a good band down the pub.
Peter Green Live.......2003-10-12
The show was a disappointment but only because I expected more from the man who was once the best guitarist in the world. To me three pieces stand out - the accoustic version of Albatross, whilst not up with the original, was still good. Man of the World was also done well as an instrumental. Need your Love so bad was always a good song with Peters Fleetwood Mac version being head and shoulders above any others. This version is still good. I would like to have seen some more confident guitar work from Peter but this DVD was worth the cost even just for the memories alone
