3 out of 5 stars Cheap and Cheerful.......2008-03-06

Although the dvd spec stipulates PAL T.V. settings I had to reset player to NTSC-so if you have a problem with that leave well alone.(I also had to return initial copy as first dvd would not be read at all, however fine when amazon replaced.) Second drawback is that throughout the entire 3 DVD package you have to put up with an intrusive garish border (stating the title; Bob Dylan Transmissions)which reduces the actual screen size significantly. You can get rid of it using the zoom function but the gain in quantity of picture is matched by subsequent reduction in quality.

After all that the quality of the performances make this a bargain bootleg for the committed Dylan fan. The 3rd DVD is the Woodstock 94 set-even if you already have it like me (in better format) the remaining 2 DVDs are still worth the six quid. You get no information other than track title and even that is wrong on one occasion. I've been scouring my Dylan reference books to try and work out where they all come from. So far there is Letterman show-a really excellent "Don't start me talkin" -Farm aid-Maggie's Farm - sorry no time to list them all-maybe others can fill in the details but do investigate if you are bootleg tolerant.

1 out of 5 stars Joan Baez is the problem.......2007-12-03

Unfortunately, too many of Dylan's Newport appearances were ruined by the omnipresent caterwauling of Joan Baez. This DVD sets those teeth-grinding moments in stone.

5 out of 5 stars A little jewel....................2007-11-18

After D.A. Pennebaker's 'Don't Look Back' and Scorsese's 'No Direction
Home' another little jewel is given to the fans of Dylan...
Thanks to Murray Lerner. I really like this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-11-06

This documentary is fascinating look at Bob Dylan's performances At the Newport Folk festivals of `63, '64 and '65.You can really see how he developedduring this three year period.
In '63, he is this fresh-faced kid singing songs of rich lyrics and imagery all smiley and enjoying the whole groove with Joan Baez.
In 1965, he now has this air of supreme control as he takes on the folkies with an electric backing band. The development is amazing. Some of the folkies boo his performance but it is clear Dylan is now on a plain of his own and beyond them and is already a unique performer and huge star.
Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Master at work!.......2007-10-31

There is no doubt about it...Bob is the king of serious song-writing. The DVD paints a picture of a time long gone. A time where words were important...a time where social statements were at its peak, and nobody did or does it better than Uncle Bob!

4 out of 5 stars "Does anyone have an E Harmonica?".......2007-10-30

At work yesterday, a colleague said that Bob Dylan had nowhere near as much talent as Barry Manilow ("Barry wrote Coca Cabana himself and it's brilliant, what has Bob Dylan ever done?"). When I explained that he has one of the biggest quality back catalogues of songs ever, and that although she doesn't think she knows any of his songs - she will no doubt have heard them and probably enjoyed them - possibly sang by various artists. The point I was trying to make (I said) is that when Barry 'The Beaky Freak' Manilow drops off this mortal coil, he'll be known as the guy that entertained middle aged ladies . Whereas Dylan will be remembered as the Voice of a Generation who changed the way we think about music.

And that is exactly what this DVD demonstrates, we see Dylan taking part in the Newport Folk festival over a period of years and the audience hangs on every word. His songs are politically charged, lyrically poetic, and his style is evolving. His clothes change to reflect his image change from countryboy to arthouse thinker. This feature also shows the infamous 1965 'going electric' moment. Controversy surrounds the booing of Dylan - is it because he went electric? Or is it because the set was so short? You watch and decide - I love the moment where he is asked (practically begged) to come back on stage - and he does so, and then asks the audience if anyone has an "E harmonica" and to just throw them up on stage.

Speaking of agitated audiences, the DVD also shows the heckling for more Dylan, making the man himself step back onstage to awkwardly say that there are others to perform. Dylan is becoming a prophet to some, and they want more and more of him. Dylan is obviously getting uncomfortable with his star-status, and some folk fans are now dismissing him 'not needed' due to his becoming bigger than the event.

This DVD isn't simply a rehash of what has already been seen before, it is new and raw - but has been treated to sound superb. Appearances from other singers, in particular Joan Baez (her impression of Bob is magic) ensure that this is a DVD is one to sit back to with the lights down and enjoy. After watching the early Bob Dylan you'll be wanting to get your CDs out and maybe even fancy yourself as a budding revolutionary cultural figure.

A lot of the footage in this docu-film had not been seen before, and it is fantastic that it is now available for the world to enjoy. For non-folk, or non-Dylan fans then this will be a bland black and white series of musical numbers - but for those who enjoy folk and recognise the artistic talents of the great man Dylan, this is a chance to witness the song writing legend coming of age. You don't get any real insights to the man behind the music, but so much of him is in the songs that it doesn't matter, and the little moments of humour, and the cheeky smiles, give you a much wanted glimpse of the man rather than the musician. I would have liked some more bonus features, but the 5.1 sound and the main feature are well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A Memorable Occasion.......2006-07-14

I bought the album of this concert in early 1973 and it was a favourite then. At that time Bob Dylan had played very little live music for a number of years and when George introduces him the crowd goes wild. All the performances are really solid including the unusual opening set with Ravi Shankar. Billy Preston enthusiasm really bubbles over and is one of the highlights of the concert. George Harrison was such a nice guy and his gentle but assured presence seems to permeate the whole concert. If I had to pick out a work that best represented George Harrison as songwriter and man then this would come at the top of the pile. After all these years its really great to see the images with the music on DVD. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars George, Bob and all the crew.......2006-01-01

A classic must have CD. The benefit concert that started the ball rolling.

5 out of 5 stars Historic.......2005-11-16

This Deluxe package is the business. It is beautiful. It has beautiful sound quality which I for one thought never existed in the original recording. Remastering has become an artform and sometimes adds liitle or nothing to the original but here it is nothing less than dynamite. You can hear Klaus Voorman’s inventive bass playing on ’Wah Wah’. You can actually hear Eric Clapton’s rhythm guitar on ’Bangla Desh’. And much more besides. One feels that one is actually there at this historic concert watching this wonderful DVD. Play Loud as The Plastic Ono Band once said.

The extras are just as revealing. Even the backdrop to the menu selction for Disc 2 with all the musicians walking through a giant hall on the way to the stage to perfom in this historic concert. George Harrison bringing up the rear, with guitar in hand and looking a little nervous. Beautiful comments from among others Eric Clapton (’a time when rock musicians could feel proud of themselves not thinking of themselves for 5 minutes’), Billy Preston (’the mood was so great that I just got up and danced across the stage’). Doing some mad chicken impression. Ego is nowhere to be seen. Just Love. And massive talent. Even the UN Secretary General recites the first two lines of the Bangla Desh song saying this showed the man behind the music. George was and is rightly praised for this at the time daring and heartfelt event. Neil Aspinall is suitably proud of Hari Georgeson as we all should be. So John and Paul didn’t show but was it not absolutely enough to have George and Ringo plus the mercurial presence of Bob Dylan delivering what is possibly his finest ever concert performance? They said at the time that Side 5 (the Dylan side) was worth the price of admission alone, and it is still true 33 years later.

And then we even get treated to some superb outakes including George and Bob performing ’If Not For You’ in rehearsal (this is special!!!). Plus an extra Dylan song ’Love Minus Zero No Limit’ from the first show. Not quite as good as the other four Dylan numbers but incredibly moving all the same. The only minor grumble is the absence of George’s ’Hear Me Lord’ which was (allegedly!) performed in the first show. Was the performance that bad not to include it?! Or maybe this is where the tapes ran out! Minor grumble as I say. Overall Olivia and Co have done us proud this time. Nice one. And one has to say it is great to see Leon Russell today, doing a rather good Father Christmas impression!

This concert was indeed a pioneering event. It is so great to have such a suitably well produced and packaged memento of it. Of a time when the spiritual message of the Beatles was so evidently Alive And Kicking.

5 out of 5 stars What a Concert.......2005-11-08

After some 30 years out of circulation on low fi video, the reissue of this superb concert for charity is most welcome.

What comes across, even more than the (mostly) great music, is the generous spirit of all the performers. George proves himself a great and modest bandleader, not bad for someone who'd never led a group before. Ravi Shankar and his musicians aren't my cup of tea, but the quality and commitment of their performance is clear.

The concert has an engaging, friendly and generous feel which is only tarnished during Leon Russell's misogynistic version of Youngblood (a tune which The Beatles performed pre-1964). Dylan, backed by two Beatles (!), is great, but the show has many highlights.

The picture and sound quality are pretty good considering the age of the source material and the on-stage goings on will bring a smile, and quite possibly a tear, to your face.

The bonus material: interviews then and now, contemporary reports and rehearsals etc, is terrific and makes you appreciate just how much George achieved in organising the event, and how hard he worked to bring it all off. DVD and CD releases include a new Dylan track, Love Minus Zero.

I bought the standard version, as I have the old three LP set with its book already; it's only about half the price of the deluxe version but the DVDs are exactly the same, as far as I can see. And if you don't buy the deluxe set, you'll be able to afford the CDs as well!

A big thank you to the Harrison Estate for bringing this great show back for us to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking show beautifully assembled on disk.......2005-11-07

A real treat for fans of George Harrison and the Beatles in general, this package (particularly the de-luxe edition) has been beautifully assembled to commemorate a ground-breaking charity event that, as George himself says, raised awareness of Bangladesh as much as it did money. The film has been lovingly-restored, it sounds great, and the bonus features are fascinating and informative. Stand out moments are of course the Dylan set, Billy Preston's joyous 'That's The Way God Planned It' and Leon Russell's hair, even more amazing on the documentary retrospective! Not quite so good (but forgiveable) Ringo forgetting the words on 'It Don't Come Easy' and Eric Clapton so spaced out that he plays the wrong guitar on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps.' His uncommunicative presence is a poignant reminder that the late 60s had collapsed in a haze of drugs excess, while George's labour of love to bring this show together remind us of both his pure heart and his prescience about the power of music to make a real difference in the world.

    3 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan - Live.......2007-10-27

Not a bad DVD overall considering, there are some bad recordings (dubbing) but the biggest disappoinment was the fact that the synopsis which I have seen on several websites now (including Amazon) is NOT CORRECT. The song list that they claim is on this DVD isn't on the Bob Dylan - Live DVD that I bought and the best songs advertised are the songs that are missing. Its a real shame. Consider yourself warned.

I only bought this dvd for the full 20 minute blistering set from queen, which as history will tell you were the best band of the day by miles. As for U2 I actually thought overated, they only perfomed 2 songs in there set, unlike queen who fitted 6 in by not overkilling the numbers, and performing it in a medley which was the whole idea a lot of bands forgot was to maxamise and utilate your time the best way possible, not boring the audience. Definatly the sound at wembley has been polished, unfortuntly the american contribution isn'nt too briliant with very poor audio sound indeed apart from the maddona set which was well mixed. However let's not lose sight that buying this dvd will save lives, even its not the most polished of concerts, all to a good cause nonetherless.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth wasting your money.......2006-11-02

Very disapointed in the DVD, only a couple of songs in full, should have spent the extra and bought the four DVD set, you get what you pay for

3 out of 5 stars Advert for the 5-disc set.......2005-07-16

With no extras, this disc is a 50 minute advert for the 5 DVD Live Aid set. Some memorable songs are included in full, others in excerpts.

Please note that the disc is encoded in NTSC, not PAL. On my TV, the reduced resolution and line structure were noticable.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dylan at his best.......2002-02-17

This is a great video for anyone who appreciates Bob dylan or music it is crisp, clear and fresh.
He is absolutely superb in his playing and performing.
Bob Dylan is without a doubt the best folk or rock musician ever.
Many of you may not think that Dylan is a great guitar player but watch him in this video.
He has all the bluegrass moves and for most of the part is playing lead acoustic.
Unlike the CD you don't get to see Dylan in great spirit and form it has to be seen to believe.
Some of my favorite selections are John Brown, Dignity, With god on our side and like a rolling stone.
This performance is essential for any music lover.
