2 out of 5 stars Great music, horrible film.......2005-01-09

The music on here is stunning and constitutes one of Hawkwind's better live albums; the problem is the visuals. This DVD is culled from several concerts across a number of venues which, in itself, would not be a criticism, but the sound very obviously doesn't correspond to the video over large sections of the DVD. This is most evident by the constant use of low frame rates so that you cannot tell that the synchronisation is out. I appreciate that Hawkwind's use of strobes makes filming them on stage difficult at times, but this sort of patching up looks ridiculous.

Even this would not put me off entirely but it gets worse: At several points, there are edits within individual numbers which range across more than one gig. On 'Silver Machine', depending upon which side he is being filmed from, Ron Tree is either bare to the waist or wearing a jacket, and on 'Assassins', Kris Tait and the other fire breather appear and disappear from the stage as if by magic. The whole thing is very disappointing as the gigs look very well staged, but they are badly let down in the way they are presented here.

I believe that the CD version of Love in Space is now unavailable, so if you do not possess that, it might well be worth getting the DVD, but otherwise don't bother. Overall, 5 stars for the music, 1 star for the film.

5 out of 5 stars SpaceRock Warlords Abducted Me.......2004-03-17

This is a great live concert.I was at the London gigs and this DVD presents 90% of the material that they played on those dates.
This is one of Hawkwinds finest live performances, encapsulating
everything that makes them a great live band;thundering rock, otherworldly synth textures, great lightshows and performance art. There really is nothing quite like it.I have seen the band live over forty times, and this was one of the best so it is great to see it captured here in its full glory;from powerful new numbers like"Sputnik Stan" and "Xenomorph",to perennial favourites like "Hassan I Sahabah",and "DeathTrap",there is even a rendition of "Robot",that absolutely rocks;they also wheeled out a Terminator-styled Robot during this number.Brock,Davey,Chadwick, and Tree on top form.Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Hawk DVDs.......2004-02-01

There are several Hawkwind DVDs out there now, and this is one of the better ones. Of course Chronicle of the Black Sword is a classic, despite the horrible video effects. The 'Classic Rock Legends' DVD is actually rather good: a decent picture and a solid performance. 'Night of the Hawks' is fairly horrid, on the other hand...

This DVD was recorded during the 1995 tour to promote the latest album, the very good (and now very tricky to find) 'Alien 4'. The line-up is Dave Brock (as ever), Alan/Ali Davey, Richard Chadwick, and Ron Tree. The performance is very good, and the sound is excellent. The picture quality is decent without being spectacular - there is some occasional blockiness.

The highlights are 'Alien I Am', 'Love in Space' (both with excellent Brock vocals), 'Robot' (with a great effort by Ron Tree at this Calvert classic - complete with robo-suit and even a real robot!), and 'Silver Machine', which comes off rather well, again with Tree singing. Many of the tracks are of the fairly mellow, space-synth instrumental mould of mid-90s Hawkwind, as you would expect, and for the most part work well.

All in all a good DVD - you get more songs for your money than the 'Classic Rock Legends' release, and there are some really great tracks here. 'Robot' is a stunner!

3 out of 5 stars Some top games - let down by length of footage.......2006-08-19

Nice to see the Aussies take a beating - especially the Melbourne game. Some of the footage quality is poor though (especially the games in Australia) and it's all too short.

1 out of 5 stars A must-see for film students.......2006-04-09

This is a must-see film for all film students, because it shows you what a really really bad film is like. A bunch of sci-fi kick-ass renegade women fighting injustice is quite alluring (to me, anyway). But in every department, this film fails badly. The opening credits get it wrong, the music is poor, the acting is stunted and dire, and the script is awful. By watching this film, you can see what to avoid in every aspect of film-making; and when you try making your own films, you will already know how not to make something which is really really bad. It isn't without charm, in a 'really bad but vaguely hopeful that it will pick up' kind of way. The actresses are quite attractive, in a 'please dont say anything' kind of way. I got about 20 minutes into the film before giving up in desperation; but with your added insight, and your need to learn from it, you might get twice as far. Go on, it's a challenge.
