They've stopped taking themselves too seriously.......2007-11-17
I have both the Live 8 & Live Aid DVDs and consider U2 to be among the highlights on both (especially "One" on Live 8). I was therefore keen to have more of their concert footage on DVD. I tried Rattle and Hum, which I found incredibly self indulgent, but gave them another chance with this one and I'm glad I did.
This is just a simple start-to-finish record of the concert at Slane Castle. It's is impressively staged, with a slender slender arc that projects out from the stage so the band can get incredibly close to the audience. The sound and video quality are good, but what really marks this out is the fact that the band are so obviously enjoying themselves, and show huge gratitude to their fans for putting them where they are.
This is a pleasant change from the dour introsepction of the 80s U2, and which so spoils Rattle & Hum.
Excellent U2.......2007-05-12
It has taken me a long time to really appreciate the quality and class of U2 as a band. After following them casually since the late 1980's, in the last 3 years I have become more and more amazed by the quality and yet simplicity of what they do; they truely have 'channelled' some incredible music together which will forever stand the test of time.
U2's qualities are perfectly captured here live; The Edge's beautifully simplistic and melodic echo drenched guitar work, Bono's incredible vocal range and emotive expression through his voice, the rythmn sections tightness, cohesion and drive. The dvd also has an 80's documentary about the making of one of their earlier albums that shows just how incredible Bono's vocal talents were in his younger days; he is probably one of the greatest modern melodic rock vocalist alive.
And the songs; all the classics sound as good as ever, New years Day, Beautiful day, With or without you, One, etc etc all sound top quality and are delivered with enthusiasm and passion. Must say though that Edges guitar sound on the more recent Live DVD in Chicago is more impressive in how that beautiful echo drenched sound he uses is captured along with his heart rending ebow use on 'with or without you'.
If you love U2 you wil no doubt already have this, if you don't then you should buy it to see what you are missing; an inspiring band, who prove that simplicity, emotional connection, harmony and melody really are the roots of music.
Honest and Great Concert!.......2007-03-12
To make it clear: I'm a huge U2 fan, own most of their CD's, also their other live performances.
This live DVD contains the live performance of the Elevation Tour in front of the irish people from U2's home nation.
To put it short: It is great! Nothing less. As usual the tracklist is very long, 19 tracks, mixing both older and newer stuff. If you compare it to the Vertigo DVD, it is a much more humble and hearttaking performance. Bono's voice is great and clear. Comparing it to the corresponding Live from Boston DVD, the audience is larger and create a great atmosphere.
You could argue, that it misses some of U2's great tracks, like 'bad' a.o., however the concert is long enough to be worth the money. And you will find the greatest performance of 'one'. The bridge between 'all i want is you' and 'where the streets...' is genious, and in general they make no errors.
So, are you thinking of buying it, do so. No disappointment. I prefer it among all U2's live DVD's.
u2 go home - live at slane castle.......2005-11-06
Absolutely essential for any U2 fan. This is a live u2 gig during the elevation tour filmed at Slane castle, Ireland. The atmosphere being electric, the venue being terrific, and the band being magic, this is an amazing insight into the joy of seeing u2 live. With a brilliant set list, with the added joy of a documentary, this dvd will well be worth your money, and provide hours of entertainment, and it will bring U2 to your living room. Literally!
fantastic!.......2005-01-31
This is a must have DVD for all - from diehard fans to newcomers, I think everyone will agree that this is an amazing performance, newer songs like elevation, beautiful day and walk on sound great alongside classics like new years day, pride and out of control, which dont sound dated. The truth is that U2 have such an impressive back catalogue, they can change setlists at any time, and sound no less wonderful. Having been at both Slane gigs, this was definitely the right choice for a DVD release, endlessly watchable and moving, U2 remain a unique entity, a band together for over 25 years and still at the peak of their considerable powers. Can't wait for the Vertigo tour.
