A little piece of TV History.......2007-05-24
Ok so the sets are a bit wobbly and the effects look equally wobbly by modern standards. However Star Trek altered the shape of sci-fi on the small screen forever and is worth watching in all its glory. Or if like me you may just like to relive your child-hood memories :)
BTW - someone mentioned the odd running order - it is presented in the original 'airing' sequence from 1966 when it was first broadcast in California. Oh gawd - I must get out and get a life...
The First Star Trek Season Is The Best.......2007-03-18
The greatest sci-fi show of all time is in my humble opinion 'Star Trek'- 'the original series' and the show's best season is arguably its first.
It's hard to go wrong with this package because its contents are so great. 'Star Trek' was a science fiction show, of course, but at its core were real human dramas which one could find easy to relate to in any time period. Fortunately, Gene Roddenberry's grand vision translated incredibly well onto our tv screens although the show was never fully appreciated until long after it was cancelled.
The joy of 'Star Trek' is its moral based themes, its mix of race and colour all working side by side at a time when there were still strong prejudices (mid sixties) interwoven with highly imaginative storylines. Star Trek's drama based format means that it's also accessible to all ages even those who sometimes fail to grasp some of the stories deeper meanings.
The first season was the most consistently great because it was new and fresh and everything being attempted was a first. Of course certain episodes may stand out a little more than others but none of them ever drop below a certain level in quality.
I'm not going to mention which episodes are this DVDs highlights because there are just so many - all i will say that this is an essential a purchase as you're ever going to make if you're a fan of 'Star Trek' - 'the original series'.
Season One - High Quality.......2007-02-14
There are more erudite and expertise opinions in the other reviews about the detail of each of the episodes in Season One. Suffice it to say, I bought this set for my wife, a long-time trekkie, and we have all (including 2 x teenage sons, who had not seen these - being Voyager/Next Generation fans) thoroughly enjoyed the episodes. Great re-mastering (quite astonishing video quality actually considering the age of the episodes), 5.1 sound, and well put together. And at the current £25 Amazon UK price, an absolute bargain. Highly recommended.
Please Santa I want this for Christmas........2006-11-23
I've been watching the re-runs on BBC2 at the weekends and I've really been enjoying them - William Shatners acting is something else (it's almost as good as his singing). I've seen these in the shops and the packaging is great and really ties in with the feel of the show - I've got all the Deep Space 9 box sets and they've done a similarly good theming job on them. These sets are now extremely good value if you consider you're getting a whole series for around £35. The Original Series is a classic and I shall certainly be getting these box sets as soon as I can.
Star Trek's still the best.......2006-09-02
This is still the best of all the flavours of Star Trek. Pity this DVD set doesn't include The Cage though.

THE NEEDS OF THE MANY.............2008-02-12
I finished watching the 'Enterprise' series yesterday - didn't see when on TV & have been watching over the last year or so - and after I had got over the shock of how that ended I slipped the first disk of this into my brand new HD DVD player. The quality makes it feel like the series was made in the recent past but 'The Man Trap' & 'Charlie X' soon reminded me of my discovery of Sci-Fi when I was a small boy in the 60's. It is a truly fantastic release based on what I have seen so far, with the improvements only enabling the series to stand the test of time in the 21st Century and enable it to be judged alongside the newer series. I empathise with those who think this series should not have been 'messed with' but believe the original will never be forgotten and that this will serve to bring its glory to younger generations today. Watch with an open mind and enjoy again.
Irreverent Bastardizations!!.......2008-02-04
Star Trek : The Original Series - Season 1 Digitally Remastered (DVD On One Side & HD On The Other) [HD DVD]
I am a fan of the Original Star Trek series and not the subsequent incarnations of the show. I grew up with the show and now, extravagantly, own all the Original Episodes as Box Sets. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley are the soul of the show and I am sure they are the reason for the shows enduring success.
Now we have the remastered edition of the Original Series and when I say 'remastered' I really mean tampered with.
Firstly I expected the Original Special and Optical Effects to be cleaned up, not substituted with Computer Generated Imagery that is of the standard of a poor Play-Station Game. Why could the original elements not be improved?
Secondly the opening credit sequence has been altered. Captain Kirks opening Soliloquy now has so much reverb that he sounds as if he his lost in space. The Enterprise also maneuvers into view rather than dart across the screen as in the Original Series. The effect is less exciting and pointless. Also the music has been compressed and remastered to such a degree that the charm of the original is lost. I am surprised they did not add a break-beat to the opening theme!
Due to extended SFX some music cues now suffer and sound jerky in transition.
With the extraordinary amount of money generated by this Iconic show could the producers of the Remastered Series not afford to have a model of the Enterprise constructed and filmed before a green screen rather that relying on substandard and cheap CGI renditions?
This whole Remastered Edition smacks of opportunism, cheapness and irreverence. Why for example are not the original untampered episodes also included in the set?
My advice is to purchase the Original Series in it's Original form and revel in the charm of the show rather than watch these bastardizations.
TO BOLDLY GO AGAIN........2007-12-29
When i first heard they where remastering the original series for american tv syndication i was very sceptical, i had visions of a starwars like remastering where some shots look alot more advanced than the rest of the movie and become more of a distraction than actually helping the movie (i really hate the jumping Han over Jabas tail,we know its damaged film George). When i saw they had releasd the remasterd first season on dvd i started to get interested i read some reviews on amazon and took the £120.00 plunge (actually i put it on my christmas list and santa was kind). I have watched 7 episodes and i think they are wonderful the new footage has been done to perfection the ship and planet surfaces and planets now look really cool and actually add to the series things actually seem to flow better as you see a sweeping landscape then the set and they match up beautifuly, the shots of the ship are excellent and are not over the top. The picture qaulity is fatastic and i can only watch the standard side at the moment, the sound is not up to much but it is to be expected i supose. If you like the original series which if you are reading this you probably do then get this set its expensive but well worth it.
Great show, bad idea.......2007-12-10
Before anyone says anything I think Star Trek is fantastic and the original show always has been a high water mark for television. The up dating of the show for it's 40th anniversary seemed like a fantastic idea to me and I'm sure to those that have seen them they are superb.
Why a one star rating then? Well this is not for the show as the show itself gets 5 stars, the one star is for this particular product.
I think the very idea of this product is insidious and this also includes the ludicrous price people are expected to pay for it. The mere idea of paying the best part of £100 for a single season of televison, however good the show is, is criminal. No season of any TV show is worth this price tag. Bring the price down please.
My second problem here is the idea of the product. What on earth is the point of combining HD-DVD and DVD on the same disc?? Please tell me as I'd love to know. Surely most of the people who can afford the price for this set will have an HD-DVD player already and so will watch the HD-DVD side but will most likely never go near the DVD side of the disc. For those that have scraped together the money to buy this product and who don't have an HD-DVD player they will do the exact opposite, watch the DVD side and not the HD-DVD side. So in either case, aside from the bonus features, 50% of the disc will never be seen. If the point of this product is to persuade people to buy an HD-DVD player then this product is even more insidious.
What Paramount should have done was to release this product on DVD and have another release for HD-DVD, which is of course what most other companies are doing. Those that just want the DVD version can do so and pay an appropriate price whilst those who want the higher definition version can pay a higher price. Neither, though, on their own are worth £100 or there abouts!!!!
BEAM IT UP SCOTTY.......2007-12-02
The original and best Star Trek series now matches up with the movies & later shows now thanks to new CGI special effects. If you are one of those die-hard Trekkies who hate the idea of the updated version of the original, then don't buy it and stop putting this version down. The only thing I find wrong with this box set is the price, it would have been better to put the set out as two different sets on DVD and HD DVD instead of double sided discs. The way the sales are going HD DVD & Blu-ray it looks as though both formats will end up like Betamax & Video 2000 - extinct.
You really need to buy this set for yourself and see what a difference a little TLC & CGI have done for this show.

Heading back to spacedock.......2005-02-15
The final instalment of the original series unfortunately doesn't quite keep up the superb standard of storytelling of series one and two. Creator Gene Roddenberry no longer worked as the series' script editor, and as a result the quality of the episodes dropped. It's not all doom and gloom, there are still a number of great episodes: 'For The World Is Hollow...', 'The Tholian Web' and 'The Paradise Syndrome' are all up to the high standard of the previous series's, and there are more good 'uns. Unfortunately, there are more duff episodes than before: 'That Which Survives', 'Whom Gods Destroy', and 'Spock's Brain' are bad, 'The Way To Eden' is awful! On the whole, though, if you ignore these, the series is enjoyable and fun, and still retains the sense of adventure and discovery. If you like star trek, you'll still enjoy it. If you don't know star trek, you're probably best giving this collection a miss and would be better off going for series one or two.

Beam on down!!!.......2005-02-12
Anyone who thinks that Star Trek is boring will be changing their views after seeing this collection. 29 episodes in all, and only one of them is a dud ('The Alternative Factor', if you can watch it without getting confused you've more brains than me!) Aside from that one, every episode is worth watching. My particular favourites are 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', 'The Corbomite Manouver' and 'Miri', three superb stories, and there are many, many, more. The great thing about the original series is that it is fun and entertaining, not filled with all the 'techno-babble' that made some of the follow up series, especially 'voyager', tedious. Beam on down, it really is great fun!!!
