Torchwood is a winner.......2008-03-13
If you like the new Dr Who series, Torchwood cannot be missed. I have decided to visit Cardiff next autumn just to see if these places really exist. This is not to be compared with War and Peace or even Inspector Morse, but it all seems to be well planned and there is always something unexpected cropping up. It is possible that nobody over 40 will understand what's going on (except for me).
Better than ever..........2008-03-12
I have to say it is disappointing that some people are still criticising Torchwood for the gay scenes - dear me I think it is time to join the rest of us in the 21st Century where (gasp) there are same sex relationships.
Still: to the res. This is a massive improvement on the occasionally uneven first season, the writing is sharper and wittier and because they are easing up on the SFX it is not over-reliant of CG (which occasionally marred the last season). Even better then that there are some real laughs in this series.
The 'special guests' have also fit in well - like it's sister show Doctor Who - they are not simply wheeled in for the sake of it. Alan Dale is nicely sinister (how far he has come from Ramsey Street) and James Marsters looks to be having enormous fun as Captain John.
So ignore the naysayers and enjoy!
Give It A Go........2008-03-12
Let me first start off by saying Torchwood is nonsense but to me that's what good SF should be. For many a years the genre was hijacked by pompus right wing America churning out endless soap opera disguised as SF. This culminated in shows like Battlestar Gallactica, endless dirge in the name of Star Trek and Buffy(the thinley disguised schoolgirl fetish nerd fest that inspired a whole generation to speak in awful broken English) The Vampire Slayer. The makers of the later did give us the fantastic Firefly which only lasted one series as it featured irony, acting, plots and various other stuff that your average Buffy lover could not comprehend.
Sorry for ramblig a bit but Torchwood at it,s best matches the X Files at it's worst Hollyoakes. First and foremost Torchwood is fun and has the feel of old sci fi B movies and at least it's not anal, but there are a few refrences to it. So if your tired of the eternal good and evil struggle this is the show for you all the charachters are flawed and the show is all the better for it. How about an episode in the near future that involves some Buffy fans stuck in their one dimension?
A missed opportunity.......2008-03-09
What a shame that RTD thinks that creating an 'adult' Sci-fi is simply a case of dressing up juvenile and derivative plots with a dose of cross gender sex, bad language and violence. This show is not clever and I am sad that it has any link at all with the Doctor Who universe, in my opinion it just damages the franchise.
This second season is no better than the first, quite possible because of a). the tiresome pushing of the gay agenda, and b). an uninspiring, badly acted set of characters that leave you simply not caring about them enough to carry the show. If there was a zero star rating, then this would have got it. It is a wasted chance to have given us some proper adult sci-fi with intellectually challenging plots and realistically drawn characters.
A shame this rubbish was green lighted for a second season, wasting more license payers money, and budget that could have been spent on more deserving projects.
Embarassing and juvenile.......2008-03-06
Someone here called this "mould-breaking". Hilarious! If there's a more derivative, hackneyed and badly acted programme currently airing then it must be another RTD project that I don't know about. For a forty+ year old writer his SF projects demonstrate an incredibly immature attitude towards sex with no opportunity missed to jam in more inappropriate smut. It's hard to care too much as even without the clumsy and boring sex the remainder of the show is so painfully unoriginal that it's surgical removal wouldn't help matters. I feel shame this kind of bilge is what we give the Americans when they have provided us with The X Files, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy amongst many other genre classics. Speaking of Buffy, James (Spike) Marsters hasn't done his rep any good by appearing in this rot with his performance in the early episodes being toe-curlingly awful. I'll be generous and blame the script but in which case you have to wonder why he agreed to do it. Painful to watch.
Someone please call time on Russell T[he Emperor's New Clothes] Davies.
