3 out of 5 stars Would have been much better without Pee-wee.......2008-02-14

5 stars to the movie and Tim Burton
5 (better 6 or 7) stars to Danny Elfman for the score
minus 5 to the highly irritating main character

But - the greatests thing about that disk - in Features there is an option to see the movie WITHOUT the dialogue, only the score and some brief commentaries made by Danny Elfman's beautiful voice. Believe me, this is the best way to watch that movie.

5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2008-02-11

i have wanted this movie for an age as i am a massive tim burton fan i was concerned at first that i wouldnt like this movie cause when i was a kid didn't really like pee wee but now as an adult can see the adult humur in it. this film is beautiful as is every single burton movie you can really see his craft in this movie even though it was his first feature film an alround great family film my kids love it since we bought it have had it on at least ten times and weve only had it a week and there is stuff that is funny tenth time round well recomend getting this for you and or your family it is a lost treasure and every burton fan needs this in there collection

3 out of 5 stars Bright and hugely colourful zany comedy........2000-11-19

You really need to be in the right mood to fully enjoy and appreciate the qualities of this film, Burton's first feature as director following his tour of duty as a Disney animator. His film-making apprenticeship is certainly reflected in this debut outing, a bright and hugely colourful zany comedy made in the style of a feature cartoon. Some of the set-pieces are truly original and brimming with vitality and off-beat humour. But you have to be at ease with the character of the eponymous hero, a grown-up body encompassing the soul and behaviour of a ten-year old, and an exaggerated ten-year old at that. Clearly there was sufficient interest in the character created by Reubens ...to spawn a sequel, "Big Top Pee-Wee". If you are unable to assimilate his creation into your sympathy, his adventures become galling as a result of his very screen presence and it is likely that the visual delights of the film will be lost to you. However, if you can accept Pee-Wee into your heart, you will be able to enjoy a hugely entertaining, at times very funny, and certainly very original picture bathed in a vividness and colourfulness which contrasts so markedly with the same director's "Batman", only four years later.

5 out of 5 stars A very funny, exciting and beautifully styled film........2000-11-16

This is much more than a story about a 'boy' who loses his favourite possesion - his bike - and goes on a desperate quest to retrieve it. As with all early Pee-Wee Herman work, it has an energetic, imaginative approach with a comically infantile yet twisted feel to the humour, which is blatently meant to appeal to adults. This is most certainly the best of the two Pee-Wee Herman films.

5 out of 5 stars true coolness.......2007-12-16

Oh my, I tried to remember the title of this cool animated film and could only remember Orin so I was happy when I found it here. They dont make films like this anymore maybe if they did there would be less chavs and anti social behavior instead of our youth wrecking bus shelters they could be home watching this lol! 80's was cool I think I was 7 when I first saw this and that was 20 years ago so am looking forward to watching this again. I recommend The Last Starfighter, Neverending story, Teenage mutant ninja turtles (not the bollocks 2007 version!)

3 out of 5 stars My very first film.......2007-08-31

Starchaser: The Legend of Orin has the honour of being the first film I ever went to see at the cinema and has held a particular place in my heart ever since. 1985 is a pretty long time ago in my book so my memory of the film before buying it was pretty patchy, though I did recall it being both fun and loaded with swearing; the second of these is probably the memory playing its usual tricks as the DVD doesn't contain anywhere near the amount I remember.

There's no denying that Starchaser is a bit of a Star Wars rip-off, the whole thing being a mix of camp robots, evil tyrants, young heroes with funky swords and space mercenaries piloting ships that sound eerily similar to the Millennium Falcon. Whilst this might seem to make a good basis for any film, I found it difficult when watching Starchaser to see it as anything other than a Star Wars on the cheap. It could be argued that this isn't necessarily a bad thing; the plot differs sufficiently to help it stand on its own whilst at the same time retaining enough references from SW to give it a familiar, comfortable feeling. I guess in the end the choice is up to the individual viewer.

The animation is of pretty average quality, but for a film over 20 years old this is more than excusable. The sound effects are well-chosen and the dialogue good if not exceptional, though there are the odd adult jokes thrown in here and there that seem a little out of place in a kids' film. It seems that the makers wanted to cast their nets pretty wide and made a film that they thought would appeal to both younger and more mature audiences. On the whole I think they succeeded, but I also think that someone older would get more out of it than someone younger.

Overall, this is a solid and entertaining diversion and a good alternative to some of the tat that kids are subjected to these days. Every part of the film is good, if not great, and it is worth looking up if you're a fan of the genre - the fact that it looks and sounds like a certain George Lucas epic may well get you hooked completely or leave you a little cold.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscover a demi classic.......2004-09-19

Very much a product of it's time, and similar in plot/character to Star Wars with a displaced hero, a roguish smuggler, haughty princess, etc, this film also stands up on its own merits with nice pacing and unpatronising dialogue.

The quality of the animation is strangely patchy, but it actually suits the storyline and action well and is mostly good quality anyway. I saw this twice in 3D in the 80s and its a shame you cant get it as a 3D DVD, as it is probably the best 3D film ever made. The animators made an effort to give a nice depth of field for the 3D, but the also makes this 2D vid far better for it.

There are a few quirks in the animation (and some of the framing is rather creative) but its all gravy(!).

4 out of 5 stars Great fun from a really good period of animation..........2003-04-28

Being a child in the mid eighties was fabulous if you loved cartoons, whether toy-based or not. I especially remember films like this one, which were neither toy-based nor from Disney (other examples are 'Time Masters' and 'A Flight of Dragons').

It's your straightforward story: young boy (Orin) starts as slave then rises up to save the universe... meets girl, meets mercenary, meets robo-girl (SO many Star Wars rips, but if you're gonna rip, do it right!), meets nasty megalomaniac bad guy who gets a great comeuppance. Plus the essential 'metaphysical' power Orin has to master. It's just LOADS OF FUN!

People were trying new things in this period and apparently this was in 3D with those funny specs. However, I saw this on video in England and I never knew about the 3D stuff; I just enjoyed it because it was a great cartoon, lots of action (bit nasty sometimes so PG certificate was justified), and the first cartoon I'd seen with swearing other than 'Watership Down'!! (for some reason this was very important to me at the time!)

Get it, Enjoy it. Not life-changing, just really good nostalgic fun from when people were trying new things out with animation...

4 out of 5 stars Childhood Gem.......2006-03-02

A fantastic film from my childhood. It has more personal sentimental value than Oscar-winning performances. Still it remains a family film for children and adults alike, with important family issues adressed. This loveable boy, with Data Analysing Robotic Youth Lifeform as his name, goes on a journey of discovery, learning the truth about his past and beginning a new future as a real boy.
Definitely worth a watch, with a fantastic score and theme song from Teddy Pendergrass that makes me cry everytime I hear it!
